For the record I like plenty of stuff that the Irish identity is inherently part of its dna (for example, I do not put Lankum anywhere near this discussion,  they are incredible), and have great admiration for the gaeilgeoir musicians out there. Its the fixation on paddy caps, pints etc that can fuck off.

Just meant, with the Father Ted and Lankum examples, that one lad's "God, but wouldn't it make you glad to be Irish!" will always be some other (relatively more cynical and/or embittered) lad's "Jaysus, would they ever fuckin' leave it out with the Oirishness!"

The Mary Wallopers are great craic. The two Hendy brothers, for anybody who doesn't know, are the two lads from TPM who had that tune 'All the boys on the Fás course, all the boys on the dole'.
They styled themselves as 'Ireland's sexiest rappers' at the time, while wearing raggy clothes. They don't take themselves very seriously

This, and it's not new, was outside Rough Trade in Manhattan back in early 2025 and the poster of "essential 2024 albums" had Kneecap and Sprints on it (not pushed on the former, enjoy the latter)

I don't mind the likes of Lankum and The Mary Wallopers. They seem properly into music and have an air of authenticity about them, they deserve the successes they've had. Amble and Kingfishr are utter tripe for the masses though and I'm bewildered at the level they've reached in such a short time. They are just generic garbage that does seem to be cashing in more on the recent Irish trad/folk revival that's been happening the last few years.

I'm pretty sure neither of them are 'their tunes', I could be wrong but I think they've only written 4 or 5 songs across their two albums. They're a folk covers band basically.

While I do prefer bands writing primarily their own material there is a strong tradition of covering and re-imagining tunes in Folk and Trad music.

This is it, and they do it well. Good craic live too. Even when it was just the lads in TPM they were funny cunts on the stage.
