Didn't mind Fontaines so much, but yer man's an eejit, and they got a load of genAI "artists" to work on their newest videos, so they may fuck off now.

For whoever asked, here's one of the latest upcoming Irish rock bands, signed to Warner, currently on a world tour, recently supported Olivia Rodriguez on a load of dates. Mate of mine was asked last minute to mix this single, so I'm hoping it does really well and he gets loads of well-paid work and free coke out of it:

There's also Gilla Band (decent imo), The Academic (not my bag), The Murder Capital (similar-ish to Fontaines). Then the likes of the Mary Wallopers too. I don't listen to any of these regularly, if ever, but there's a fair buzz around Irish bands on the international stage at the moment. Some of these may end up added to this line-up and all. But end of the day, I couldn't give a shit who plays Slane, and never have.

The name The Mary Wallopers puts me off. A friend recommended them, but I just can't get past the stupid Oirish name.

Yeah, I've heard bits and pieces in passing but never felt drawn to checking them out properly. I just know they've broken through in terms of popularity.

Oh yeah, I agree that the Irish thing is cool at the minute. Sure why not let a few of these dudes ride the wave, even if some of it is total and utter dogshit.

If you think the name is bad you should look up the band photos.

Don't know the Fontaines other than hearing the name for the last 2-3 years but the singer was brought out on stage at the Pogues 2 years ago and he was an insufferable prick he was that bad he nearly ruined the entire show.

Jesus that's horrific. As others have said, yes this sorta thing is popular right now, and thats a shame to me though.

Its all just so reductive and trite. Its almost saddening in a way that latching onto Oirishness is a prerequisite for success for many bigger artists, like our collective artistic merit as a nation is reduced to playing the leprechaun on the international stage, writing tunes about pints and going on the sesh. I find it all so stomach turning.

Perhaps this is a comment for the pet peeves thread though...

The Mary Wallopers haven't changed their schtick since they were nobodies, afaik. Same for Kneecap, if that's the sesh reference.

Not referencing any artists in particular (bar saying their photos are horrific), I just have a general disdain for that form of, branding, I guess?

Fair enough. I tend not to think about it too much; if something's good it's good, no matter how Oirish or not it may be besides. I'm old enough to remember Irish people who were our age now back then accusing Father Ted of being a cheap cash-in on Oirishness for British audiences. I'm even old enough to remember Nemty having a go at Lankum (then Lynched) for similar

For the record I like plenty of stuff that the Irish identity is inherently part of its dna (for example, I do not put Lankum anywhere near this discussion,  they are incredible), and have great admiration for the gaeilgeoir musicians out there. Its the fixation on paddy caps, pints etc that can fuck off.

Why is this post created none of these bands are metal

I love how this is your first post in 10 months

Slane even states "45 years of rock n roll at Slane castle" etc etc but as Manson said in 98, rock is dead!!

At least I didn't create a fookin shit thread .there is a gig coming up Benediction..people should be talking that up ..as opposed to talking Fontaine's DC and Damien Dempsey...

Great point! The amount of passes both Fontaines Donaghmede Dempsey are getting here and neither set of cunts have put out an album as good as The Grand Leveller or Transcend the Rubicon
