Nothing like a hot Powers on a winter evening. Can't touch whiskey apart from that though, it destroys my stomach.

I haven't had a whiskey in over 20 years. It seemed to flip a switch in me that couldn't be turned off for the rest of the evening.

I'd go from being all about having the craic, telling jokes/stories to being horrible to people and ready to throw a slap for reasons that only my whiskied-up self could explain. So I decided that it didn't suit me at all.

I'm not much of a fella for the hard stuff really - most of my shenanigans are fuelled by beer and beer alone. A lot of beer, mind you.

These days I'll drink a Sailor Jerry (US version only), an Absolut or Grey Goose vodka and soda or a Jaegermeister with ice (if not served ice cold) if I go beyond the taps.

Thirsty now.

Spirits make total shit of me too but I am not an angry drunk so there is never that worry, maybe a few hugs too many and some utterly bizarre lines of questioning, but generally collapsible and just more poisoned.  I often follow up a few pints with a Sambucca to kill the fullness and keep going.  If I'm on stout, I will eventually put a whiskey beside it, if I didn't start out with both.

I swore I wasn't drinking this weekend but can already feel the tide shifting.  Gave myself deep fear last weekend, getting a solid 12 drinks in before 7pm on Monday evening then starting into a few bottles of Grolsch in the Supermacs on the dock road while abusing the hole off the other two (sober) lads in the band.  Before practice.  Had to turn up for Jury Duty on Monday and spent the day trying to not cry and eating Anadin.  Fair happy I didn't get selected.

Im gone mad for those O'Haras 7.5% double ipas recently.

There is something to be said for a nip of Jameson with a pint. I don't do it often but the cut of the whiskey countered by the cream of a good pint us a grand feeling.

Ken Bruen wrote about it so lovingly that he must be a man with the affliction, I'll have to dig out the quote.

I'm exactly the same as Stout above on whiskey. Got into bother a few times with it when I was a young lad.
The last time I drank it, years ago, I was in the local with one of my best friend, had three or four powers and found myself seriously thinking about kicking the head off him for no reason whatsoever.
Luckily good sense took hold and I stood up and walked out of the pub and ran the 3 miles home.
never touched the shite again after that.

Anyone tried Aldi's whiskeys?

Picked up a bottle of their Highland Black scotch today and have to say at 22e, tastier than most budget whiskeys, wouldn't be a connoisseur by any chance but enjoy a tipple and it's going down nicely tonight.

Quote from: open face surgery on May 03, 2023, 11:56:22 PMI love the peaty stuff, even budget stuff like Connemara and Teachers. With that, have neve noticed any peatiness to Powers.

Got a lovely bottle of the quare stuff lately. Powered through it. Smooth and delicious. All the mushies I had for micro dosing ended up into the pot.

Enjoying the Lidl Belgian selection at the minute. Nothing touches the Belgians for beers.

When I used to drink whisky I loved the Peaty stuff aswell. I've been to Scotland hiking for 10 days a couple of times up in the hills and the variety of the stuff there is mental, every village, hamlet and bothy seems to have its own distillery. Every boozer has a lad who knows the stuff inside out.

Did a distillery tour in Glasgow, the Clydebank one, can't remember any of the shite they were saying, only the three nippy sweeties at the end to send the tourists 'hame' happy.

Had a couple of Laphroaigs last night before heading to bed!

I like the Talisker 10 in Tesco which is often 42 euro, my go to for a peaty whiskey that won't break the bank.

Have you tried the Connamara single Malt. Fairly strong turf smoke flavour.

No I've never tried a peaty Irish whiskey myself, but sounds like my thing.

Anyone like the black barrell Jameson? It was a steal in Tesco recently reduced to 30, very nice to drink.

Only whiskey I like a lot really is regular bushmills. Don't like the black bush even

Edit: as for scotch, I'd take the eggs before the whiskey. Thoughts of it makes me shiver to my bones

Having a nice cold bottle of The Banker from Whitefield Brewery (ex White Gypsy. Name changed for the stupid reason you think).

Fuckin delicious.

In Aldi at lunchtime to pick up up a few burger buns for a BBQ this evening. Wandered down the booze aisle - as we all do.

Popped a few Einseidler's into my basket - €2.49 - great German helles. €3.79 in most "craft offies".

Wino/piss-head lad in the aisle next to me taking a rake of Galahad or some other gut-rot off the shelf with me looking at him and thinking "Christ, the state of this fool's sad life must be something to behold."

Got back to work, sat at my desk to continue typing up a presentation - looked out the window. Yer man is in the park across the road with a few of his pals - all laughing, smoking and guzzling beer in the sunshine.

Who's the fucking fool here?

Have been enjoying a few different Helles as I find them in various offies lately - those Einseidler's are scoff but I picked up a few Stiegl's in Tesco for €2.50 a pop that are lovely too.  As usual though I meet you and the Wino half way, I always stick 4 or 8 Prazsky on lately, best of the cheap cuts.  No reason to buy the G'had anymore with the minimum unit craic, but I like the few soft cheaps after my nice brews are gone.
