Quote from: Yung Led Zeppelin on January 20, 2023, 09:57:19 AMIt's gone to Dublin levels very very quick. Still €4 a Beamish in Annie Mac's though. But it wasn't all that long ago you'd easily find it for less than €4.

I actually walk past Annie Mac's to go to my local - Mok's.

The pint in Annie Mac's is fine, very good actually, but yer one running the gaff (the owner's daughter maybe?) is a fuckin' headbanger - not like the ones on here.

Went in there one Friday night with a few of my wife's friends who were down from Dublin. We had just jumped off the bus from town. It was 2300hrs. Ordered pints and G&Ts. Yer wan looked at the clock.

"Do you know what time it is?!"

"Eh, eleven?"

"Just in here for last call - where were ye all night? Just blowing in the door to top up."

Fuck me,  I thought, last call isn't for another 90 minutes and we've all only had 2 or 3 pints, plus I used to go in there with my buddy Chuckles most Thursday evenings before heading across to Cissie's  - but I was on the other side of a counter long enough to not cause undue scenes.

"Em, OK. Do you want us to leave?"

"I think that's the best thing that you could all do now. Out ye go."

I nodded. Looked around at the 5 lads in the bar all sitting in silence - and left - effectively halving their customer base.

Went down to Mok's where Don gave me a big roar and served us until... well - until we had enough.

You would have been a travelling bard in times past. Not many lads have the ability to tell a sceal like that.

Cheers, man.

Unfortunately I am considered nothing more than a dopey travelling b(ast)ard in my own time.

Anyone tried going lower abv as the evening wears on?

Usually it's start on something handy and end up on the top shelf but I wonder if it would be smarter to start off hard and then maintain the drunkenness with something weaker like shit lager or such. What put it in my head was that I had a couple of cans of Pilsener but then I wanted more and what was left was a very watery substitute so I'm left in a sort of limbo here that's inadvertently turned into maintaining the exact same buzz instead of getting worse.

May have a smoke I suppose...

I usually have a bottle of wine and then a few bottles of strong beer after.
I've cut back on smoking weed while I drink as I just get mangled way too soon.

I was mangled all of 20 minutes later after a couple of pipes!

Those evil bastards at Jameson selling whiskey to the Russians.
I'm off out to get absolutely fuck-faced on powers and do my bit for Ukraine.
That'll show them.

Powers is the better of the two.

That's not right. Powers is terrible. Way too peaty.

Otherwise not sticking up for the Jemmy either...

Bushmills is where it's at, regular or black.

I'm sure there's better boutique stuff but out of the commercial shite it's the best of that particular idea

I love the peaty stuff, even budget stuff like Connemara and Teachers. With that, have neve noticed any peatiness to Powers.

Got a lovely bottle of the quare stuff lately. Powered through it. Smooth and delicious. All the mushies I had for micro dosing ended up into the pot.

Enjoying the Lidl Belgian selection at the minute. Nothing touches the Belgians for beers.

Don't get me wrong, I would drink puke from a tinkers sock if I thought it would get me locked

I was joking above there.
If I drink whiskey there'll be an ambulance required, and not for me.
Fucking lunatic juice that stuff.

Powers is lovely, especially the Powers' Three Swallows, absolute silk of a whiskey, maybe my favourite.

Powers is deffo the best of the cheaper ones (though most are grand altogether), cannot for the life of me understand the bad reputation it has. That Three Swallows is absolutely divine alright, love spicy pot still stuff in general.

Only realised it when I was over at Roadburn and fancied a whiskey, and all they had anywhere basically was Bushmills, we're actually spoiled for whiskey here. Like even in the small pubs you generally have a good selection, and the cheap ones are all a decent drink.

Yeah you're right, anywhere you go in will always have a couple of brands going but if you're abroad you'll often just get what you're given (often Bushmills or Jameson) and would have to go to somewhere that does spirits/cocktails etc to get a fancier one or more choice.  I would also drink any that are handed to me to be fair lol
