No. Unfortunately not. That would have been some craic. Alas I didn't see him again until Friday afternoon when I got home from work and was fiddling with the dodgy front brake on my bike in the drive. I gave him a wave and thought that we would resume the usual niceties but no - he walked over towards me. "Some night the other night!" he laughed. "I was raw til about Wednesday. Missed a family birthday lunch with her folks and all on the Sunday, puking and the fear all day. She nearly ate the head off me."

"Oh right" says I "You won't be doing that again in a hurry."

"Why not? I'll do what I want!" says he.

I'd have found this more believable if he didn't turn and look behind him or lower his voice before he said he can do what he wants.

"Cool enough, give us a shout if you want to go for a few pints."

"Yeah." and he turns away. Then turns back and looks at me at my bike - "Em..... did you fix the flush on the downstairs toilet?"

"I did"

"Nice one. She's been on about that for weeks. The only reason I noticed though was that  I puked in that jacks at some point and the fear was so bad I freaked out at the thought of getting the puke out of the broken toilet. Then the flush worked. And I nearly started crying."

Anyone know how this is going to work?

https://www.irishlegal.com/article/minimum-unit-alcohol-pricing-to-come-into-effect-within-a-year

Are the government proposing that all products are increased or just cheap, loss-leaders? Anything outside of standard beer is already expensive in the off-license.

I don't think that increasing the price of drink to discourage binge drinking is a surefire way to get results. It would be far more beneficial to educate young people about drinking and respecting the booze.

I travel to Germany a fair bit for work, I see kids 16 and up getting a single beer from kiosks and chilling with their friends in the park and then recycle the bottle. And look how much a case of high quality beer costs there. €16.99 plus the three quid deposit on the bottles.

In Ireland you'd spend your time worrying if the kid was going to throw their can in the river or wrap the bottle around your head when they were done.

Judging from that article just cheap cans will be effected as anything dearer will already by above the minimum price per unit of alcohol.

In reality, what will happen is if now dutch gold costs the same as a good beer then  offos will up the ptice of good beer too.

Punk IPA is in Aldi for €1.49. Down from €2.49 for a 33cl bawtle.

Guys..PRICE OF THE PINT IN DUBLIN !
Whats that all about ? How can they charge so much for a pint of Guinness for example in city center when the stuff is brewed a stones throw away ? Its what ? over 7 euros in some bars in temple bar and not much lower in other parts of the city. I was in remote West Donegal recently, middle of nowhere, the few bars I went to charged no more than 4.50 - 4.70 a pint
Yeah it's a joke, I never drink in Temple Bar but was in the Underground a while ago for a mates gig and was sickened when I was told it was nearly 7 quid for a pint of Guinness.

Pleasantly surprised though when I went in to the Clock on Thomas Street and it was 3.90 for a pint of Beamish.

Try The Snug on Stephen Street Upper (just at the junction of South Great George's St and Aungier St). Pints of Guinness and Smithwicks for the fair old price of €3.70 each.
We always head there when down in the capital.
Good aul juke box in it too.

I'd be a stout, brown ale, red, amber etc kind of guy. I like my British style beers - cask ale, bitter, Scottish ale and so on. While generally a fan of the craft beer movement I find the vast majority of it is focused on the pale and hoppy side. I like that stuff too, but  9 times out of 10 I'll go for a deep malty ale rather than a bitter hoppy one.

If I'm out (rare these days) I'll drink whatever alternative or craft is going - rebel red, chieftain (common now as Fran Well is macro owned), o haras etc. Occasionally I'll find myself in a specialist beer geek place and fill me belly. Locally, Athlone has a great new option in Dead Centre, though its very hop focused. If I'm caught somewhere with no choice I'll go back to Guinness but it's a major major limp tasteless inspid disappointment after years of real ale/craft beer. Lager is for holidays and if you drink bog standard Irish pub lager by choice you do not actually like beer.

Luckily I homebrew now the last few years. Always have some stout or brown or scotch on the go. Call them something metal and make up a bad ass necro label for the craic and get the tunes on!

Anyone know about Sinha Stout or Lion Stout I think is what it's called in Europe? It's from Sri Lanka it's best drink I have ever had.

Is it available in Ireland?

Recently discovered Rossini Italian lager in Aldi.

It's branded like Peroni, it's one of those "specially manufactured for Aldi" jobs, it's the same proof as Peroni and heck, it tastes like Peroni.

€1.79 for a loose 500ml bottle, not a bad sup at all.

Brown Bear IPA (Pearse Lyons brewery Dundalk) is in Aldi for 99c a bottle at the minute.
Don't think it will ladt long at that price so hurry up.
Tasty tipple it is too.....
