I always liked the idea of the "vault" feature on MI as a feature for digging up over looked or forgotten albums (even though it ended up being largely a series of articles about weak albums by big bands)..thought it might be fun to post a few here

Floodgate "Penalty"
Ex-Exhorder band who did the vaguely stoner/sludgey NOLA thing. I guess they were always in the shadow of Down, but I really liked this album when it came out. FFO Down, latter day COC, Crowbar, that kinda thing. Think there was just this one album and then Roadrunner dropped them

Atrocity "Todessensucht"
Absolute masterpiece that again suffered from Roadrunner picking them up and dropping them almost instantly. A more complex, morbid sounding Euro take on the Florida stuff that picks up nicely from "Hallucinations" and stands up remarkably well two decades later. Shame they turned into such an abomination after this. If you've never heard it or only know their awful goth metal shite, set aside a half hour or so, grab the headphones and get stuck into this

Ocean (US) "Here Where Nothing Grows"
Sorely underrated band from the early 00s post Neurosis/Southern Lord inspired "post" doom thing. These guys did it best. I feel like their name was a stumbling block in terms of being mistaken for the inferior German band The Ocean. Heavy as fuck, well thought out. Deadguy "Screaming With The Deadguy Quintet"
Well known (largely for their seminal "Fixation on a Coworker" LP) in hardcore circles, not well known in metal circles (bar Igor Cavalera wearing their shirt in the "Attitude" video yonks ago), but if you like Today is the Day's best stuff this will absolutely blow your mind. Contemporaries of theirs, I think Steve Austin may have recorded this in fact. Noisey, skronky, violent shit that ended up being their last and best record.

Some good ones there! Especially the Floodgate one, picked that up at the time. Hasn't aged as well as the other acts you've mentioned though.

One of the last Into the Vault's was Paw's Dragline, a phenomenal record and one which fits the Grunge tag best for me. Load of other great albums from that era get overlooked, Tad's Inhaler is another one!

From a metal perspective I've always loved Liers In Wait's ep - Spiritually Uncontrolled art, suge a display of primal savagery on that record, shame it's all they ever released.

"SUA" is an absolute masterpiece, still kills me they never did a full album..didn't they start recording and then abandon it according to legend?

In terms of the Grunge era..Barkmarket's "Gimmick" springs immediately to mind

Loudblast "Sublime Dimentia"
Very influenced by Death's Human and Pestilence Testimony of The Ancients. Its not as good as either but has its own charm, and is a fantastic album by an otherwise uninteresting band.

I'm a huge Sacred Reich fan but couldn't agree there. Heal and Independent are dull records, there's about 4 good tracks on each. Heal is a whopper track.
