EDIT: modified the title as, the more I get into synthwave as a genre, the more I've realized my track is probably closer to darksynth than synthwave.

Been working on synthwave over the lockdown and this is my first track. Influenced by the likes of John Carpenter, Brad Fiedel, The Prodigy, Carpenter Brut, and of course mainly 80s horror movie soundtracks.

Would love some feedback if you have a minute!

Good stuff, nice mix of sounds there, I hear some The Fragile-era NIN in the mix too. I could easily have listened to a twice as long version of the track.

Some of the chord changes in the intro were a bit abrupt/off the beat, but that'd be the only thing I noticed. More, please.

Ya, very cool. What gear did you use?

QuoteApart from the drums, all sounds and effects in this track are made by the guitar, mainly manipulated by the Boss SY-1 Synthesizer pedal (though also featuring many other pedals and effects

That's a bangin track man! Them SY-1 pedals are good craic. I got one earlier in the year myself but I haven't done anything productive with it, just mess about with it for a while making weird sounds.

Is Y Signal named after the bad guys in Streets of Rage?  :)

I had the Boss pedal myself for a while but I returned it. Great for messing around but it didn't lead to much in the way of productivity!

I've been thinking of using my gear for more synthy stuff, I'm just lazy

Thanks for checking it out! Yeah NIN would definitely be an influence as well, I must update my online info to include them.

I wasn't sure what you meant about the intro. Could it be that the intro is in 3/4? Sometimes the count catches me off-guard as well as I'm expecting 4/4. The track does switch to 4/4 at the point the intro bass drops out.

I appreciate you listening and the feedback! Will hopefully have another track up in a few weeks.

Yep it's mostly the Boss SY-1, although there is also a Boss DD500, MicroPog, EHX Bass Filter, and an MXR Dynacomp on there. Plus a bunch of plugins. Was all recorded with Reaper.

I love the Boss SY-1! Took me a little while to become friends with it, but once you get into it you can get some really usable tones! My favourite is that bass tone on the track. Thinks that's Bass setting 2.

And yes, the name is most definitely cribbed from the punk guy in Streets of Rage 2! One of the best games ever (and also a bangin' soundtrack) :)

Thanks for checking out the track guys!

No, it's more like each chord stops dead and the next one picks up off the beat. Not sure how to describe it properly, not a music theory head at all. It's a minor thing anyway, sounds great overall.

The NIN mention piqued my interest, even though I've no great love for synthwave. Didn't really feel the NIN apart from the guitar sounds like synth thing but it was by no means a bad effort and doesn't sound jakey or anything. Have you many more on the go?

Sent that to a guy I work with who is a hugely critical asshole about everything, he reckons it's not bad if a touch generic.

Know what you mean about the jakey thing, a lot of synthwave seems to sound like EDM stuff, and quite cookie cutter at that. Thanks for checking it out though, I do have 4 tracks planned for release. More on the doomy/ethereal side of things but with the occasional metal or Prodigy style breaks.

Keep em coming I'll give em a go. As I was saying I have no love for synthwave but I do have a strong curiosity for electro made by metal lovers. Except for dubstep, no curiosity there.

Put it into this thread too

Might inspire a coupla heads on here who do this stuff and might add to it.

Great thanks! I'll throw it up there.
