Apologies if there is a thread for this already. There was a thread on the old site about synthwave and darkwave, thought I would start another one if anybody is interested.

I am not sure if it is still an active genre as it seems very much tied in with the 80s nostalgia buzz going back a few years but I still very much enjoy some of these albums.

Post your favourites.

I still go back to this, which I think was recommended on the other site:

Gunship's first album might be one of my favourite albums of all time..incredible vibe to it

Just sharing this here as well to bump this thread and see if there are any other synthwave/retro fans on here as well

Been working on synthwave over the lockdown and this is my first track. Influenced by the likes of John Carpenter, Brad Fiedel, The Prodigy, Carpenter Brut, and of course mainly 80s horror movie soundtracks.

Would love some feedback if you have a minute!

Not going to post a link 'cos I'd never hear the fuckin' end of it, but that recent Miley Cyrus track Midnight Sky could be straight off a Gunship album. Whopper synthwave backing track and vocals to match. And herself minxing her way all over the video doesn't detract none neither.

That said, Gunship would be among my least favourite synthwave projects, precisely because there's so much singing. My two top turn-to albums when pulling an all-nighter for work are these:

Perturbator, one of my favourite, both album cover and music...

I haven't actually heard a huge amount of synthwave at this point but Trilogy is far and away the best album I've come across so far. The huge, heavy ending of the first track leading into that machine-tight funk of the second is just perfect.

Has anyone seen The Rise Of The Synths yet? Reviews don't seem to be particularly positive.

I can't get the buzz going with the Synthwave at all even though on the face of it I should love it (C64man, keyboard lover, loves electronic rock etc) and I have been trying various things from this thread. Just finished listening to a Carpenter Brut album and then this popped into my head. It has everything that I can't find in this thread going for it:

And then that brings me to the same conclusion that I had with Dubstep; where are the good songs that are being made with this new (well.....) great sound? What have ye lads? And of course as someone who loves electronic music I understand that there are great tunes as well as great songs, so where are they to be found, if ye don't mind me asking (as a lad who is approaching this with a "want to like it" sort of buzz)?

Know exactly what you mean, I'm also in the "want to like it more than I actually do" camp. A lot of it is very samey in fairness and I more find you come across the odd cool track rather than full great albums of it. I think this one is pretty cool. Good guitar-esque synth groove off it and even somewhat of a guitar solo. Even a tiny bit of that Heresy glam too:

If it's that Heresy vibe you're after though, def search up some darksynth playlists. That'd be an excellent place to start.

Dunno is even the right place but fuckit, something I threw together in the last coupla days.

I've it on here now. I was expecting something else altogether but I like it and the mix is a good trip on the headphones with the sounds swinging around the stereo field. Do you do much of this sort of thing?

No, I'd be very much a novice at this kinda thing. I've a coupla trax that I think I'll give the drum machine treatment to but I'd say it'll be a novelty that'll wear off. Thanks for listening man.
