Working my way through the new Heaven & Hell boxset. Radio City gig is killer, but the Live at Wacken gig is fantastic. Hard to believe Dio would be gone less than a year later.

One of my biggest regrets was never seeing him live. They were supposed to be special guests for Maiden in 2010 and I was delighted. Thought finally! But not meant to be.

Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales & To Mega Therion
Sanctuary - Into the Mirror Black
Venom - Welcome to Hell

Enslaved - Hordane's Land 9.5/10
The 12" , not the split with Emperor, not a fan of splits.

Exodus - Exhibit B : The Human Condition 8/10
I have a lot of time for this one which is a good job when it's an hour and a quarter long and a whopping thirteen tracks of Exodus' trademark punchy thrash. Ideal for bus journeys then. Whether you want Rob Dukes in your ears for that long is another matter.

Beherit - Live In Praha CZ 8/10,
The BM progenitors bring their ritualistic evil to the ancient city of Prague, zero crowd interaction from the band here and, no doubt, zero fucks given. As it should be.

Xoth - Exogalactic 8/10
Some really adept tech thrash here from 2023, this third one from the Americans plays like Bal-Sagoth on an Obscura trip and makes for some hi-octane galactic wanderings.

Convulse - Without God 7.5/10
The Finn's debut morass of ugly, uncompromising Death Metal, not, for me, the hidden gem some would claim it to be but a satisfyingly murky and brutal release, particularly this OG which sounds waaay filthier than later reissues.

Thanatos - Four Decades Of Death 7.5/10
Re-recordings, odds and sods plus a live DVD of the final hometown show in Rotterdam. Second tier Death Metal? Yep. Savage?.Most definitely.

I love me a good split, including that one! Is it a case of a side in your thorn?

Never liked them, always jarred me to switch to a different band on the same release so I own very few splits.  Even sold the Katatonia/Primordial one . Two superb tracks but I just don't like the format.

Must nab that Beherit live album at some point. The crowd response in Japan was also somewhat muted, but out seemed like everyone was soaking up the experience rather than going ape, and it felt right. Moshpits and mayhem would have seemed out of place.

Exactly. Black Metal. Stand and glower.
