Title: Ved Buens Ende
Post by: Eoin McLove on March 17, 2020, 09:37:13 PM
I couldn't resist pre-ordering the forthcoming Soulseller grey DLP edition of 'Written in Waters', despite the hefty cost avec postage. It's another great album that I've had for years but which has only, in the past year or so, fully clicked with me. The pompous singing and not very black, black metal riffage doesn't make it an easy nut to crack,  but with the right mindset its magic becomes apparent. Along with Ulver's demo and 'Min Tid Skall Komme' by Fleurety, Ved Buens Ende stand out as being particularly tricky to pin down. Despite the shit artwork (every cover I've seen for this album has sucked equally) I'm looking forward to having it on vinyl.

With Virus finished up (a band I've stupidly ignored) and VBE gigging, I wonder what the likelihood is of a second album ever emerging. As long as it doesn't impinge on the brilliant Dold Vorde Ens Navn, I'm all for it.

took me a good while to get into this as well but so worth it... hard to believe victonik and carl micheal wrote this at 18 and 20, very much ahead of their time.  I remember seeing a water damaged (how perfect is that) original purple pressing of this for sale in neseblod for around 100e but couldnt bring myself to spend that kind of money so might spring for the soulseller re-issue!

I have the Misanthropy CD somewhere, not one I've listened to in an age. Difficult to label alright, I always put it, Fluerety's Min Tid Skal Komme and Monumentum's In Absentia Christi in the same box/not-box - all were pretty much their own thing with similar 'cold' productions and evoking the same mood - for me at least.

I'll have to check out Monumentum.

I must get one I missed the last repress on soulseller and sold my original to someone in Portugal a few years ago. Avantgarde records reissued the Monumentum album on CD a while back and it's on bandcamp also definitely worth checking out. I'd love to see VBE sometime or even Dodheimsgard. I have no idea if VBE would put out something knew but Virus has some of the same quirky and idiosyncratic feeling despite also sounding like a very ordinary rock band so maybe they could do it. I think a reformation of VBE fell through previously because Carl Micheal wanted to control everything but it's good to see them doing something.

It was an absolute instant classic for me. CME is a genius and I must say I really like the cover of the cd I have. Would've always just taken for granted that you were into it, Andy. The demo is great as well and Virus are/were unbelievable. I like what I know of DHG which is the first album, always thought it was a demo, and the last.

Never heard Fleurety so have that on now and will check out Monumentum.

It was one I thought was interesting but didn't fully click with me until more recently.  I love it now.  Fleurety is another one that takes a bit of effort but well worth it.

Listening to Unholy's 'The Second Ring of Power' lately too which has certain similarities to 'Min Tid Skall Komme' to my ear,  despite being doom death/ funeral doom.

Didn't make much headway with Fleurety, I must say. I would say The Second Ring of Power, which I love, is an altogether more cohesive endeavour going by the 10 minutes of Fleurety I listened to. haha.

As an aside, Nécropole popped up in the suggested which is fairly straight forward BM but sounds savage.

I'd suggest sticking with Fleurety.  It's a real grower.

I'd love to see VBE sometime or even Dodheimsgard.

Who knows you may just see them someday, Lars from DHG is in Khôra which is a dublin based project, and Vicotnik is a guest on the new album, very nice guys.

The 'Written in Waters' DLP arrived, along with the new Shores of Ladon promo CD. Hopefully I'll get to give both or either a spin today at some point.  The LP looks great,  I even think the artwork looks more interesting in the flesh. It's infinitely better than the hideous Photoshop artwork on the CD reissue that I have.

The sound on this is perfect. Amazing clarity. Well worth the few bob, methinks.

Pointless Trivia: The cover paining was by Lise Myhre, the same girl responsible for that Nemi strip that used to appear in loads of newspapers.

I had to Google that but I recognised it immediately.  Was it in Metal Hammer or Terrorizer at one stage?

I think it was in Terrorizer for a while alright.  It was a syndicated strip, so appeared all over the place in multiple languages.
It was definitely in the Metro or the Herald AM or one of those freesheet rags that used to be everywhere about 15 years ago.

I've had this album on so much over the past year.  Dunno why it never guilt clicked with me before but I find it incredibly addictive lately.

I got curious last night and threw this on having never heard a note of it before. Must give it a couple more goes but it sounds pretty much up my street so far

Threw it on youtube again while i was doing a bit of gardening. Yeah it's decent. The vocals are a bit of an acquired taste but they were only rough once or twice. The more traditional BM bits were sort of jarring here and there as well but well worth the listen.

Have to mention the cover though. It's shocking.

The whole thing is somewhat jarring I think,  but once you get into it all of the elements are just as they should be.  Certainly a case of having to put in sombre effort to crack the nut,  but highly rewarding when you do.

I have grown to really like the artwork on the LP edition but the horrible Photoshop abomination on the CD version I have will never stop hurting my eyes,  and possibly even my feelings.  Who knows.

I hope that is the CD version on youtube there so as I'd hate to think there is an even worse one going out there waiting for me if I buy the CD

I'm alright with either of those covers. The bottom is the one used on the cd I have.

The top one is on my CD's cover, the Misanthropy release. I'm assuming the bottom one is on a reissue?

Yep,  the bottom one is the Candlelight CD reissue that I have.  Cuntish beyond words. The top one is on the recent Soulseller LP. It has grown on me a lot.

It was the top one I was looking at, but seeing the both of them there, the bottom one is actually much worse.

Listening to this at the minute.

The Scott Walkers of black metal. What an utterly bizarre album and so ahead of it's time. Even the production style is odd I think for '95, almost doesn't sound like it's from that period (or is that just me?). Anyway, class!

Scott Walkers of black metal is the perfect description.  Haha. Eccentric beauty.

This, DHG - Kronet and Kvist are 3 albums that I find compliment each other perfectly.

I can't really get into Kvist. The first song is cool but the rest seems to go over my head.  Must revisit. I love the album artwork, I must admit.

The tracks Stupet into Svartedal should be enough do the trick. If not, who knows!?

I'm the opposite to you Andy; been into Virus for years, but have stupidly ignored this project. This album isn't just right up my street, it's like I've found it squatting in my gaff. Ah, sure isn't life only grand, still discovering albums that can blow you away this deep into the game!

Kvist on here now for the first time in a little while. Stupet playing as I type. All the ingredients are there but I can never seem to remember anything about the record from one listen to the next. It's decent, just lacking in killer hooks or something. It might be an album that clicks with me on my 100th listen! Actually picking up a bit of an Emperor buzz that never jumped out at me before.

I've liked the bits of Virus I've listened to so I'll have to grab some of the reissues Duplicate Records have put out. I always thought Carl- Michael Eide was the mastermind behind VBE but Vicotnic was. Weird how CME really ran with the style on the Virus stuff.

'Min Tid Skall Komme' by Fleurety on now. Another oddball little gem. Kind of a similar production in some ways to 'Written in Waters'- it's dry and unadorned sounding. They have a different take on things but possess a similar sense of mischievous adventure to my ear.

VBE next up.

I made it through it anyway. It was fine but still not particularly arsed about it.

Beyond Dawn - Pity Love on now. This sounds cool so far.

Finally got around to Written In Waters today, for the first time.  Very good, will definitely fire it on again soon, I feel this will only get better with repeat listens.  Some bits obviously seem jarring on the first go, but that's a mix of going in blind and the production style.  Clear to see the influence they had on the likes of DSO and DHG.

Watching VBE live here under the influence. I would love to see them live in the flesh. Mad cunts. Such a totally unique entity.
