I usually listen to podcasts on the commute to work, I find they alleviate the repetition of driving back and forth to the same place every day. What interesting podcasts are out there?

Some personal recommendations:
Athletico Mince - Bob Mortimer surreal gold with Andy Dawson which started out loosely football based but went off on a tangent over time. Very funny.
Top Flight Time Machine - related to Athletico Mince but directly football related and with Sam Delaney in place of Bob Mortimer. Far more frequent than AM too. A different kind of humour but still worth checking out. Their exploration through the second Roy Keane autobiography is fantastic.
Kermode & Mayo's Film Review - weekly show, takes a while to get all the in-jokes but, once you're in, you're in for good
Empire Film Podcast - weekly with some additional spoiler specials or one-offs, a recent one of which was "Is Die Hard a Christmas Movie?", if that sounds like your thing it's well worth checking out.
The Double Stop with Brian Sword - Hard rock interview based podcast which talks mostly to producers & engineers about albums they have worked on. Fantastic but irregular. The back catalogue is well worth working through.
Disgracelands - tales of music based utter debauchery, very engaging.
Dead Rock Stars - Mick Wall and Joel McIvor discuss the dead.

I also gorge on podcasts as a commuter/partial insomniac. A lot of good Trek ones out there and soccer (The Anfield Wrap is essential if you are a Red).

More generally I just finished In The Dark season 2 which is about a guy convicted of a mulitiple murder in Mississippi. It's excellent.

The usual recommendations after that: Serial season 1, S-Town, Bear Brook, Homecoming, the In Our Time series. All really good.

Only really listen to a few:

Arsecast is mostly about Arsenal but occasionally has some general football episodes

Stone Cold Says So is pretty essential if you like wrestling, same with Talk is Jericho but he does a lot of music ones too

'Cocaine & Rhinestones' is a great podcast about the history of country music in the 20th century.
The stories and characters discussed in the episodes are fascinating and I'd recommend it even if you're not a fan of country music.

Also listening to 'Ear Hustle', a podcast about life in San Quentin featuring interviews with inmates about various aspects of prison life.

Listened to Disgraceland last night. Great idea executed in the most annoying fucking fashion possible. The lad's descriptions are far too over the top and dramatised considering they're actual events. He treats each story like a fucking film script.

Yep, had to delete all that Disgraceland stuff..couldn't hack the hack

Started listening to 'Reply All' Short little podcasts that so far range from around 20-30 mins each going over mostly internet related things.
Speaking to a guy who buys and sells domain names, talking about this anonymous posting app called yik yak that was used by students to post racist crap about other students etc.
One really strange episode was about an app called Figure1 which is used by medical 'professionals' to discuss odd cases.  It's like instagram for doctors where they post images of anything from heart beat results to severed hands in all their gory glory. Others comment on possible ways to handle these and 'like' them also. I downloaded it myself to have a look, its.. just a bit surreal :O

Currently listening to Last Podcast on the Left's 3 part episode on Josef Mengele. Been listening to these lads the last few years. They do a mix crime/conspiracy/occult themed stuff, I think they also market it as a comedy podcast, I don't think I've ever laughed though, not really my humour, but their episodes are so well researched that it keeps me interested. Worth a listen for sure, especially their 'heavy hitter' serial killer episodes, if that's something you're interested in.

I've been recommended this loads of times but always just been told it's about 'internet stuff' so never really bothered with it as the episode titles didn't give much away, this sounds pretty interesting though. Going to give it a lash when I get to work.

Are there any metal pocasts worth listening to?

Are there any metal pocasts worth listening to?

I just started listening to "Heavy Metal Historian" - they have a lot of episodes up. I started with the origins of doom metal. It's not bad so far but yer man doing it has a slightly off-putting voice - almost as if Stephen Hawking's voice box came to life. I haven't listened enough to tell you if the information is revelatory only to the casual metal listener or has genuinely interesting new things to add.

I really enjoy podcasts. As Juggz pointed out, they can alleviate the mundanity of everyday tasks.

Here are a few that I listen to;

"WTF with Marc Maron" - comedian Marc Maron interviews actors, musicians, directors and other comedians. Some people find Maron's personality a little too much to take. I've been a fan of his stand up since the early days of Conan O'Brien. His interviewing technique is bizarre and shouldn't work but it does.

"RHLSTP" - Richard Herring interviews comedians but the format is much looser/funnier than that of a regular discussion.

"How Did This Get Made?" - Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael and Jason Mantzoukas discuss terrible films with celebrity guests.

"Monkey Tennis" - an Alan Partridge podcast which is generally entertaining but a few times I have found myself shouting at the speakers. "Stop getting Alan wrong!"

"Let There Be Talk"
- Comedian/ex-musician/metalhead Dean Delray chats with other comedians/musicians/metalheads.

"Adam Buxton's Podcast" - Buckles talks to comedians/actors/musicians - always good craic.

I used to listen to the "Irishman Abroad" podcast hosted by Jarleth Regan until he had that fucking eejit John Connors on. I haven't listened to one since.

I also used to listen to "The Blindboy Podcast" in the early days but he's disappeared up his own hole now.

"The Totally Football Show" - I enjoy listening to James Richardson's take on football. He's been great since the old "Football Italia" days on Channel 4.

Joe Rogan's podcast is OK too but he can get lost in showing his in-studio guest clips on YouTube. Not great for an aural medium.

Jarleth Regan *shudder* I remember fifteen years ago or more he was on a show on RTE where they chose a bunch of people to develop into a comedian and he won.  Zero personality,  zero sense of humour,  minus ten charisma... I'd be morbidly curious to listen to his podcast.

Yeah. Sums him up really. About as engaging as a damp tea towel. The main reason I listened to it was because some of the guests that he had on were rarely given the chance to speak on long-form interviews. Richie Egan from The Redneck Manifesto/Jape for example.

The Graham Linehan episode is cringe-worthy in parts. Regan wavers from trying to hardline taking Linehan to task about his anti-trans comments on Twitter to kissing his arse in other sections.

Defo checking that out!
