Any recommendations for a style of guitar playing that I can only describe as 'Jimmy Page-esque'. Robbie Basho above is an example: primitive guitar is how they describe him. I suppose an ethereal, mystical sound is what I'm talking about. Any suggestions more than welcome.

I guess you know the biggest direct influence on Page for that style, Bert Jansch, but just in case:

No I didn't know about him. Must get checking that out.

That Robbie Basho guy is a discovery for me. Loving it; sounds pretty much like Bert Jansch on guitar with a mix of Joan Baez and the singer from Anthony and the Johnsons on vocals. Can't beat some proper folk!

Ahh he's from Pentangle. Have listened to them but again just not enough. Another lad is Richard Thompson who I keep promising myself I'll listen to more of but never get round to it.

Love that Basket of Light album by Pentangle. Richard Thompson and Bert are serious players, and also their bass player Danny Thompson who is hands down my favourite upright bassist going. Also worked with John Martyn, Kate Bush and Talk Talk to name a small few.

Also...Isn't it all a bit nicer replying to each other in this type of thread

Ah stop man. Politics is absolute poison.

Go fuck yourself you patronizing cunt!  :abbath: :abbath: :abbath:

You'd swear from this thread that Chris was actually open minded  :P :P :P

Tis a joke, let's not derail this thread!! It's actually a really good one.

If the amount of shitetalk in those other two threads was about music this place would be flying.

Bert Jansch was also one of Rory's main inspirations to be able to play acoustic as well as he played electric.

Dead Prez recommendation to boot, but I guess all hip-hop heads know them already.

Well I could go on for days about hip hop, but before that i'll keep it on the old folk stuff that is being buzzed off in the last page of the thread.

Artist: Jackson C. Frank
Album: self titled
Year: 1965
Genre: Folk
RIYL: everything being mentioned in the last page of the thread

He was only around 21 when he recorded this one and only album of his career. His lyrics and conviction in the tunes makes it seem like he had lived a lifetime. His life/career is a pretty sad story too, mental health took its toll after recording this, checked himself into a mental hospital for assessment, went away on his own for a few years and just lost all of his confidence.

Robbie Basho has me listening to this beautiful album again. Beach Boys-esque.

Holy fuck, poor bastard. He certainly had lived a lifetime by 21...and then another twenty before he died  :-\
