Haven't paid attention to Down in a long time. I'm only really be familiar with their second album. Never knew they did IV and didn't realise that Rex left in 2011 :-X

These songs are shit. As someone rightly said, anyone in the genre could come up with them.

Both songs are weak as piss, as were the bits of the latest COC that I heard. Such a shame because they used to be so so good when they were younger

Seen a bit of an interview with Keenan recently. Apparently they were in the same studio as Soundgarden back in the day. Keenan got his hands on the crown of thorns from their 'Jesus Christ Pose' video and someone took a pic of him smoking a joint wearing it.

I never heard that before I wonder if the original photo was ever posted online.

The "anyone..." quote there is pretty much it. Other than the bit of pedigree in the band, nobody at all would listen to it. This is in stark contrast to Nola, which is a great album in its own right.

Edit: and I'm not even saying the tunes are particularly shit either,  they simply exist and not a lot else is all. I don't really see what these lads can do other than exactly that though, like what would we hope to hear from a new Down album?

If they'd based that song around the little middle riff they could have come out with something interesting. But they focused on the most ordinary riffs to build the song around, and Phil's vocals just don't have enough melody in them to carry ordinary music.

I'd legitimately hoped there wouldn't be any more Down albums after NOLA which is a perfect record.

I'm imagining now if they'd just left it at Nola and thinking they'd have gone down as legendary altogether.

I only found out through this thread that there was a fourth album. I'd thought the last thing they had was an ep, which I listened to once

Na II and III are great and IV is also good. The 4th album is split up into 2 EP releases.

Ah so that's what the EP thing was..

I didn't like II at all when it came out and I was really looking forward to it at the time. Did listen to III a few times but I felt there was just too much vocals on it and not enough solid riffs. Thinking about it now, Nola is sort of like that as well but with better songs

Surprised at how much love for Nola there is, i would of thought Downa II was the one people loved, I think in particular Lysergik is one of the best album openers I can think of
Play the Academy July 13th

Down II is shit.

NOLA is ruined by the vocals, musically it's mighty. Down III is the best of both worlds, and the first EP is also great. The second one didn't make any real impression, for good or ill.

NOLA is perfect, less of that absolute heresy. Down II has some absolute bangers on it. When over the under is good, it's really good but most of it's middling

Nola smokes them all. There is no comparison.
