Tis the time of year where the debuts by Paradise Lost, Anathema and My Dying Bride are all in constant rotation.

I remember at the time thinking MDB and Anthema were kind of junior versions of PL on the demos, but obviously by the time they hit vinyl that was definitely not the case, and all three have that special shared something about them but they're all very much their own thing. Couldn't pick a favourite between Lost Paradise and As The Flower Withers, and I tend to go for the Crestfallen ep more often than the album but Serenades is fucking perfect. Such a trio.

Strangely, I don't hear a whole lot of newer bands nodding to these three nowadays - I should probably rectify that myself   - bar maybe Excarnated Entity. Am I missing out on anyone doing this kinda thing nowadays?Specifically stuff that has the spirit of those three debuts (cos I couldn't care less about anything after "Lost Paradise" and while I enjoyed the subsequent MDB and Anathema albums they were never quite the same)

Peaceville's death metal era is probably my favourite era of metal anyway - Autopsy, At The Gates, Darkthrone, Therion.. but sure look, that's another thread. Shame they have zero interest in modern death or doom metal

The first Dream Unending LP definitely takes a lot of influence from'The Silent Enigma'.

Just started into the MDB last week on a particularly dreary day. Followed by Dance of December Souls and the Ceremonium compilation album. I think Turn Loose The Swans is my pick of the albums from the Peaceville three, but there's 9-10 releases over the span of a few years that are all absolute classics.

Dream Unending is a little too flowery for me. Ceremonium all the way though, so underrated

I think the Ceremonium album is getting a reissue. The one with the cool/gammy artwork of the tree made to look like stain glass. Autumn something?

That's the one. Tack on the demo and 7" and it'll be essential. One of my absolute favourite bands of the era

I've been listening to Anathema's Pentecost III a lot lately, definitely the best thing they released.
I've been listening to The Blood Divine a bit too. It's a pity they didn't release more material.

I only heard the first TBD album which was good if not great, never got around to the second one. That main riff in Aureole is mighty.

Agreed about Anathema, Pentecost III has always been my favourite of theirs, as much as I love Crestfallen and Serenades. I know most people's is The Silent Enigma but I've always found that tedious.

Aureole is a standout track on that album alright.

Speaking of Peaceville- is yer man Hammy's book worth checking out?

Pentecost III is whopper alright.
I'd actually completely forgotten about The Blood Divine, must dig them out for a listen.

Edit: TBD has not aged well at all.

I really enjoyed it. Nice insight into how the label began, sets the context to signings and releases, and how things went after I suspect a lot of us gave on the label and knew nothing about.

I really should pick it up.

I love the fact they've jept a lot of stuff in print and gone on to reissue the likes of Thergothon, Unholy, etc who would have fit right on there back in the day.

Not so keen on their policy of not signing current underground acts.

Anathema were my favourite of those 3,followed by MDB.Crestfallen;Serenades and P3 are epic!.MDB took a while before they hooked me in.First heard MDB on the 2fm metal show (I am the bloody earth)
At  the time I was very much in the Florida DM buzz and thought MDB were a bit slow and boring. But that changed as time went on.PL were a band I just never really warmed to bar a few tracks.

Anathema in Cork in 1995 was one of my first ever proper gigs.

Still kicking myself for missing that, was getting more into punk/hc at the time and losing interest in metal.

Yeah it's always great seeing labels keeping the old stuff in circulation (and priced fair too!)
