I read The Third Policeman a good twenty years ago. In my memory it was hilarious and completely nutty. I wonder if it would impact me the same way today. Probably!

I finished Engagement the other day and have to say, I really enjoyed it. I'm now ploughing through Said The Dead by Doireann Ní Ghríofa at the minute, and quite enjoying it. It's strange- the perspectives of the protagonists is ambiguous. Or maybe I'm stupid. But it's oddball and eerie.

I read The Third Policeman in Ray K's voice given the absurdity and wording of it reminded me of his madcap videos and stories like The Boiling Gourd etc. Thoroughly enjoyed it anyway.

Funny you mention that, it's about 30 years since I read it first, started rereading it recently and couldn't get into it at all. Found it annoying actually. I'll pick it up again at some stage.

Lately it's been strictly non fiction for me.
Just finished "The Stranger in the woods" by Michael Finkel, about a guy called Christopher Knight who lived in the wilderness in the US for 25 years.

Just starting Tiffany Francis Baker's "Dark Skies" which is, unsurprisingly, about night.

Just finished a short book - A Short Stay in Hell by Steven Peck. A man dies and discovers he followed the wrong religion so is sent to a Hell modelled on Borge's Library of Babel. He can only escape hell if he finds a book containing the story of his life in a library of (possibly) infinite books.

Breezed through it and really enjoyed it.

Just nabbed this. Looks like it'll be fun.

Dubliners by James Joyce. Kinda in between books at the moment so a few stories will do. I have the Ginger Man on the locker next.
There was a pub in Merrion square or beside it we drank in in College with that name actually

Snow Crash - Neal Stephenson

(And I'd also recommend Cryptonomicon and Seveneves if you like his style, even though they're not similar to Neuromancer.)

50 pages into The Third Policeman and have loved every sentence so far. Will be revisiting An Béal Bocht as soon as I'm done, which I've not read since I was 18.

Finished 'Dead Europe' (Christos Tsiolkas) the other day about a Australian guy of Greek descent who comes back on a photography trip, a lot of nightlife and drugtaking ensues and no small amount of graphic sex. An interesting look at the seedy underbelly of a decaying continent . Must have a look around for the movie of it.
