QuoteWhat is it that people dont 'get' about the situation

I get the situation fine. I'm saying I don't really care about the circus, and I'd rather my tax go towards keeping actual vermin off the streets. Although I don't share his beliefs I do think he was correct in initially expressing his concerns (In a Christian School no less),had he approached it in a measured way he may have even garnered legitimate support pointing to gaps in the system but as you say he ruined that for himself.

People will split hairs all day long about Burke's court orders, what stage if any his appeal is at, he's on the payroll but he's been dismissed etc etc, and insist the full force of the law must come down on him. Yet at the same time we seem perfectly comfortable living in a system where repeat offenders and genuine thugs with multiple sometimes hundreds of convictions are in and out of court and back on the streets with barely a consequence. You don't have to agree with Burke to see the imbalance — the system seems far more eager and committed to make an example of someone like him than it does to deal properly with the people actually making communities unsafe.

I'm not advocating that Burke gets free reign to show up at Wilsons - surely efforts should be diverted to halting the nonsense? The repeat pattern of prison, court, school is a waste of everyone's time and media outlets could play their part by relaxing on the attention they're giving it.

I'm not going to go back and forth on it, it's just that this case is current. I'd love to see the energy and commitment applied to this situation equally applied elsewhere because at the rate we're going he'll do more time for this than the two individuals I highlighted in the case above.

You're posting in a now 59 page discussion all about not being comfortable living in such a system. I'd recommend you simply stop thinking about and mentioning Burke at all: be the change you say you want to see in the media!

C'mon dude, you know what I mean.

I actually don't disagree with the majority of what you've said. I'd rather the Burkes were starved of any further media attention as they seem to thrive on it and with everything else going on at the moment, it's all very low stakes stuff. But at the same time, its a circus of their own creation.
I completely agree that I'd rather see criminals locked up, but the crucial difference between them and Enoch Burke is that, once they're sentenced, they don't really have the option of walking out of jail. Enoch Burke has that option, all he has to do is simply abide by a not particularly onerous condition to stay away from that school. Clearly this is now just about him making a point, rather than a realistic prospect of being reinstated to his teaching position. I can't imagine any parent, even if they agree with his initial stance, being happy with their child getting taught by that clown. Or anyone being legally represented in court by his equally idiotic siblings for that matter.

The joke's on us, lads. Being evangelicals, they know that the oul J-dog is coming back once Israel is in control of Jerusalem, which is going to happen soon and, this time, he's bringing the Rapture with him. There are no theys in heaven. Game, set and match, Burke.

Slight aside on the Burkes - Enoch's younger brother Isaac used to give me piano lessons when I was 17/18. Self-righteous twat. I remember the mother used to wait outside in the car for me to finish when one day without warning or invitation Mammy Burke hopped into the car and started reading bible verses, imploring the mother to repent etc etc. Poor woman refused to drive me there anymore

Seemed just a bit weird at the time... had no idea they would come to such prominence in the public consciousness!

The fuckers used to give me grief on Main St when I walked by them with a Nirvana or RATM t shirt on as a young lad. Bought a Dying Fetus tee to really annoy the cunts.

A friend was in the mature students' society in UCG with one of them a few years back (one of the sisters, not Ammi). Said she had been pleasant enough but threw a tantrum when she wasn't given the position of treasurer - which, given the family's history with money in UCG, shouldn't have been a surprise to her or anyone else. Stormed out of the room bleating about discrimination and all the usual nonsense.

He just felt sorry for her in the end, thought she could have had a promising future if not for the brainwashing getting in the way of common sense.

Similar to that, I had a family member in NUIG who was secretary (or some such position) in the Christian society, and the Burkes used to disrupt every meeting insisting that the elected members were illegitimate and that only a Burke leadership would be satisfactory.

In fairness it was probably the most excitement at a college Christian society meeting in quite some time!
