Some of the stuff MAGA want banned today was banned in Ireland into the 90s, for conservative, traditionalist reasons, and there were full-on banning campaigns, orchestrated by the US Evangelical right, which has since morphed into MAGA, on all sorts of issues.

I just mean, it's a shitty way of acting, but MAGA didn't learn anything about cancelling from "the left": the Evangelical right has always been like this.

I get that. Backward shite. But even the current cancellers can, justifiably but hypocritically, say some variation of "Ye started it".

I think it has exploded like everything else, with the internet. Everyone is 'on', all day, all fucking night. We fill our brains with all of this outrage, and there is plenty to get your knickers in a twist about wherever you look, so it drives us all a bit mad unless we find a way to disconnect. Because many can't or won't step away from the screen and realise the real world still exists, they live as though every insult, every injustice is aimed at them personally, and because enough people are living that way, that virtual reality becomes reality. It manifests. It literally crosses over into the real world like a form of black magic. You get woke... then you get Trump
... what comes next? More Trump probably until he dies. He's now the king, the pope and Jesus Christ himself.

America, for the foreseeable future at least, seems like a lost cause. It has given up its position as the protector of the West, and Europe and the rest of the West seems to be in denial. Trying to appease this lunatic is making things worse. Maybe for the next three years the rest of the world has to cut off from the US and then, if the place isn't a complete lost cause and Trump leaves office and is somehow replaced with a less extreme individual (although looking at what remains of the Republicans there doesn't seem to be any hope on that front from that side), maybe we can re-evaluate. It really feels like the end of an era and the beginning of some new order.

Ya, you're right. It doesn't affect me in the slightest who's getting cancelled this week and I generally don't get involved or worked up about it. I suppose it's just looking at things from afar and seeing that the pendulum has indeed swung the total opposite direction. Using America as the lens of things is, of course, pointless as it's gone so bananas there. But what happens in America, some of it trickles down to the UK, and subsequently, us. I just despise glee being had for someone/something getting cancelled and that applies to both sides of the spectrum.

QuoteThe left, however, opened the door.

Amen.

Pretty much with you on all that. I'm not sure that it is as easy as blaming woke for Trump and Trump for woke. I think it's been a long spiral into shit over there, and both sides are as fucked as each other.

Edit. No,  the right is definitely more fucked at this point. Trump poses a real threat to the entire world. He is so wild and unpredictable, a complete megalomaniac and a wannabe (possibly soon will be) an actual dictator. Very fucked up.

The irony of saying 'Amen' to that

Speaking of spill-over...

I hear Independent Ireland also requested a minute's silence in the Dáil..?  :eyeroll:

We've all lost the fucking plot. Bitta Father Ted, sezzyu

Trump isn't really the problem, he's just a charismatic figurehead with just a few years left to live. The evangelical christian movement, those and unfathomably wealthy and sinister creeps behind him, own most of the media over there and are, with Presidential power, actively weeding out dissent from the media companies they don't yet control. The tech companies have taken a knee in deference and it turns out god is love only if you like your gods straight and white.

As for thinking it doesn't affect you here, you really don't think Musk was interfering in Irish affairs when he offered to bankroll McGregor and accused our government of tyranny?

Ah, that turned out about God a very, very long time ago in fairness  Just that many previously more or less lucid people, bizarrely including metallers, decided it'd be a good idea to shack up with the hardcore bible-bashers against the transgressives.
