What happened there?

Quote from: Anvil on January 08, 2025, 09:21:14 AMReally don't see the issue.  They aren't making gigs by "real bands" less visible.  Indeed they are probably increasing traffic to that area of the forum as it looks busier.

Nothing more than me showing my age and some wistful nostalgia, but I do miss the days when the MetalIreland gig section was absolutely hiving. It felt like the entire local scene revolved around it and you'd be checking every day to see what local shows were on. Like a little mini local scene monoculture that has long since dissipated across social media.

Basically after Oxygen in 2005/2006(?), loads of folks who'd been through the absolute clusterfuck of it went on boards to vent.

MCD took umbrage and got the libel lawyers in and you weren't allowed to mention them without the threat of getting taken to court. I think thumped got a warning too.

There was possibly folks who worked the fest posting in the threads.

Hmm interesting. I don't remember hearing anything specific, though I was never on Boards.ie. I was actually at the 2006 one, it was peak radio indie hell, but had James Brown playing one of his last shows before he died, and also had the World Cup playing on a huge screen in the campsite (saw a 20ft Zidane deliver that headbutt, glorious). Don't remember anything specifically shit other than it being a bit scummy in general. I heard that it got progressively more stabby and violent in subsequent years though. +

MCD have always been such pleasant people. I was at Oxygen 06 as well and also went to see James Brown it was literally the only thing that weekend I had any interest in seeing. don't remember anything happening at it so must have been 2005.

Just found an old Irish News article there and apparently it was indeed 06! I do seem to remember a rumour about someone's tent being set on fire with them in it, but overall it seemed like any normal festival. So either everything happened in a different area, or I was somehow oblivious to it...

I don't remember that at all. That year I was at Download, Wacken and Oxygen. I do remember the riots at Download that year very clearly unless the Oxygen stuff was confined to a small area like you suggested.

Thinking back to Oxygen now my mate got sick all over the inside of our tent about 2 hours after we put it up on the Saturday morning so maybe we left early on Sunday but I also distinctly remember walking past that huge TV seeing France on the screen that would have been the Sunday evening.

I can also remember the two of us heading down on an empty CIE Bus early on the Saturday cause we were arguing then him getting sick was the icing on the cake. I also had a load of pills on me and my face dropped when I got to entrance as they were searching people so he took them, put them in his jocks and brought them in for me. No way I would remember all of that and forget tents being set on fire.

One other thing I remember is being at a festival somewhere and people were going around slashing tents and stealing from them which may have been 06 but I was also there the year Rage Against The Machine played which was 08 and that could have happened then.

There was definitely a phase of inner city scumbag teens squading up and sneaking in on the last night to act the cunt at Oxygen/Electric Picnic.

I don't see a problem with posts for tribute nights for rock and metal acts. The gig listings section isn't super active and it's a handy way for people to promote their shows.
The tribute thing seems to be getting a bit bigger in the last few years I feel, seems like more shows of that nature are being booked in Limerick anyway. As lots of big headlining bands are retiring and also with tickets and getting to Dublin for shows getting too expensive it's a way for people to experience the music live with less hassle. There is definitely a huge group of people who'd go to a tribute act but would never go to a normal metal gig in the same local venues.

Of course tribute bands should post on here.   :abbath:  :abbath:  :abbath:

The last gig I was at was a cover band,Damn Deal Done Entombed cover band,it was great craic!

Yeah, couldn't give a fuck tbh, list away. If I've no interest I don't open the thread, but it's not like they're the only gigs being posted.

Where are they from, I'd go see them for sure
Wearing jeans and leather, not crackerjack clothes

If it was in the gig thread, I might have at least heard of my not turning up to it
