I should probably have been clearer in the original post. Ya, it's post-metal adjacent stuff I'm most curious about. Post-metal shouldn't have any real boundaries and yet it became very formulaic despite that, hence why I turned off it back in the day. I've compiled a healthy sized list of stuff to check out and I'll add the couple here too so thanks for those.

Strictly speaking there should be enough breadth in the genre that there should be something for everyone but again, it's a scene that got saturated with run of the mill stuff and it takes a bit of effort to find the diamonds in the rough. I can understand why once people see the label they're inclined to not give it a go, though.

Ah yeah, and you're right, plenty following a template, wasn't really having a go at your post all tbh!. It can be a nice loose label though, so I'm just surprised when people focus on the samey bits.

It's a genre I revisit every few year years, I've a soft spot for it but I feel like I got into through some of the bands influenced by the greats rather than the originators themselves.

Always end up coming back to The Ocean and Cult of Luna. Only in the last year have I finally gotten into Neurosis and the older Isis stuff, I used always just listen to Wavering Radiant.

Enjoying going through the recommendations in this thread.

The Mouth Of The Architect / Kenoma split from about 15 years ago is a great listen, not sure if it's been mentioned. Kenoma are about to or have just released their debut album too.

Edit: It appears that the Kenoma album came out in 2017. D'oh!

This thread would not be complete without mentioning Red Sparowes.
And specifically Every Red Heart Shines Toward the Red Sun. An instant classic when it came out.

Was it Red Sparrows that Emma Ruth Rundle was in?

It is indeed, really enjoyed her collaboration with Thou.

Not sure they'd fall under 'post-metal' but that's what wikipedia has them down as but listening to this performance by Solstafir tonight and enjoying it, having not really delved into their stuff before.

Any fans with album recommendations?

Anything from Kold onwards. I also like Varaha.  Not sure if they fit the op's definition of post metal, but MA has them down as Gothic/Doom/Post-Metal
