I got into metal in the mid 80s, lucky to be around for the beginnings of thrash, hardcore/crossover and Death metal as well as the explosion of Metallica. That is some list from 1990.

"Practice What You Preach" and "beefed-up production" in the same sentence? I'm guessing the writer hasn't heard it then 

It reads like a list of "bands who went on to be revered in 2020 but released an album that year" rather than a best of. 89 was one of the best years of Metal, IMO, and that's a relatively weak list given just how good it really was.

Whether you like them or not, or whether you like the outcome, Sonic Temple and Dr. Feelgood had an incredible influence on where Metallica went next and are massive albums in their own right. Nothingface is one of the greatest of all time. Louder Than Love and The Headless Children, absolute undisputed classics. The rest would rank very highly, personally, with the likes of Control and Resistance, Perfect Symmetry and Masters of Reality being particularly significant. Such a good year.

Yup, it was indeed a great year for music. Luckily I worked in the family business back then and had a bit of income to spoil myself with the odd purchase or two every week. I was lucky too that there was a decent record store in the little town I lived in.
Brilliant times....
I owned a stereo with a CD player for a full year before I bought my first CD (Metallica - AJFA).
They were just too bloody expensive to begin with.
You could buy 2 tapes or records sometimes for the same price as a CD...
