Absolutely. Every listener brings their own knowledge, experience and bias to the listening experience, but I still think that music played with passion tends to make itself known because that extra spark tends to jump out through the player's creativity.  I was listening to Paralys by Wulkanaz earlier and they are a perfect example.  On the surface there is little to set it apart from a hundred other raw black metal bands- lofi production,  primitive artwork,  simple structures- but the execution puts it well ahead of the pack.  The music is primitive but brainy.  The riffs are simple but are bursting with imagination resulting in plenty of twists and turns.  It sounds really fresh and invigorating but it's hardly reinventing black metal in any way.

Just seen on burzum museum page this band is the closest atmosphere and aesthetically you can get...
