I think it was featured/referenced in Basil Poledouris' score for Conan The Barbarian, during the raid on the temple at the end. Might not have been the actual Holst piece, but very similar to it anyway.

This bit?

That's the most famous section of Jupiter and has been used left, right, and centre down the years. Notably, for the 80s/90s ref, here:

And here's another I never knew till now:

I wonder if they were aware of King Crimson's take on it. Not impossible, though seems unlikely. Either way though, interesting that the same piece of classical music may have been as instrumental in the birth of thrash (via Lars hearing Am I Evil?) as it apparently was in the birth of metal in general.

Ah! That might be it  8)

I just checked it and yep, that's where I know it from. Does that mean that John Williams, who is credited with the theme music, swiped it, or reimagined it from Holst's Jupiter? Sampled it? How does that work...

A Holst influence on Williams has been talked about a lot re Star Wars, so I guess it's just part of his broader DNA..? Never noticed a particular similarity with the Jurassic Park theme though.

I don't think it sounds particularly like JP, though it's a similarish vibe. Different melody altogether though. As mentioned, that section of Jupiter (along with the entire Planet's Suite, in fairness) has been used to death in various artforms over the last century. It's one of those things where if you sat down and listened to the entire suite, you'd realize you knew almost every part of it already from hearing it in other media, either with being directly used, or hugely influencing. The Braveheart soundtrack sounds quite influenced by Jupiter as well.

Yeah Williams has definitely mentioned him on a few docs over the years (as Poledouris and Howard Shore have too).

Think Holst gets used on temp scores often when they're putting the movie together to get an idea what they want.

In 'that's a bit mad' news of the day, the guitarist who got the boot from the band Turnstile has been done for attempted murder - he ran over the singer's dad with a car.

Apparently he was doing donuts and the father got clipped. So I call bullshit on attempted murder, because he was clearly just turning with style.

They have a new EP coming I think.
