Disappointed to hear this, selfishly, being a big fan of the band for many's the year.  Steve is an absolutely vicious vocalist with massive stage presence, and is an immense song-writer.  I'd listen to any of the later 3 albums as much as I would the early stuff - they're all insane.

Best of luck to Steve, and to the rest of the band for the future.

Or is it a new song altogether?  What's "Gnosterces"?

Secret Song spelt backwards

::) Good spot.  At the end of California though?

No Code is their chef-d'oeuvre for me, top to bottom, followed by Vitalogy, Ten and Yield. I'd pick one or two songs from Versus and Binaural that I'd have any interest in today, and would place both albums miles behind Riot Act.  They fell off a cliff after than when they handed song writing duties over, becoming the dour radio-rock-by-numbers, Eddie Vedder and Friends.

I'd agree with the comments on Matt Cameron.  He's a master behind the kit in Soundgarden, his style unlike anyone else I can think of, but is a complete misfit for PJ and vice versa.  Having said that, he wrote the best tracks on Riot Act (and more), and it sounds like Matt's mitts are all over the new single too, which is the best thing I've heard from them in 20 years.  Could be wrong about his input here of course.

So what I'm saying is, I'd rather drop my balls into boiling water than pay €200 to stand in a field listening to Vedder pontificate about Ukraine or Trump or some other shit, when I caught the No Code tour in the Point in '96 for 16 or 17 punts.

Quote from: Pagan Saviour on February 07, 2024, 02:14:03 PMAll three albums are essential for different reasons. The first was my favourite for the longest time but in recent years have come to regard Disco Volante as their magnum opus. California is the one that gets slightly less air time though it is still of high standard.

I'm absolutely perplexed by what they're doing at the minute. Got raging wrath when it dropped and dug it in the moment (Maybe I was just in the humor of it) but since have hardly played it. Scott Ian's presence is highly annoying.

I'd go with Disco Volante > California > Debut, in that order.  They are all completely different and could be the work of 3 separate bands.  California is an absolute masterpiece, but even then Disco is the one I return to most.

They began life as a thrash metal band, hence the current incarnation that no one asked for or wanted.  It's a nice add-on to the collection with some banging songs, and it sounds great, but it's not really a Mr Bungle album is it?

They could possibly get the old gang back together, but that won't include the sax player Theo Lengyel who was arrested and charged with the murder of his missus at the beginning of the year.

Quote from: astfgyl on February 07, 2024, 01:54:42 PMThread if anyone wants talk about Mr Bungle. Got the idea from @Ochoill. We might get a few days out of it. I'll start so...

Disco Volante is their best work and has only gotten better over the years but the quality of all three proper albums is spectacular. Such a bold move to release that after the debut though I remember hearing it around the release date and being convinced that it didn't really qualify as music. The brother picked it up off the back of the FNM connection and I remember putting on the tape and waiting for the first "real song" to kick in, which never came

Never saw them live or anything but you'd never know they might be back some day

First time I ever heard them, was when John Kenny played Everyone I Went To Highschool With Is Dead on The Metal Show.  I too was a huge FNM fan at the time.

You beat me to it! Haha.

I remember reading that some band members said they regretted including so much demo-era material on the debut album - that in hindsight it felt childish, and they'd already moved on from that kind of thing.  It's still great though!

I was saying in that duplicate thread, that the outro to After School Special has nothing to do with the subject of the song itself, but is actually the internal monologue of a house cat.  Yay or nay?

I love all their stuff, but Cascade is probably my favourite.

Really enjoying the new one - there's a great flow to it and it has some absolute belters.

All of the previous stuff is decent too, his vocals on Louder Than Love in particular are amazing. Avoid King Animal or whatever it's called like the plague, it's woeful. They really shouldn't have bothered with reforming, also judging from the live material they put out.
Yep, I saw them on tour in 2014 and wondered that too.

Sorry but I can't agree with this. I only managed to see them on their reunion but all three shows I caught were great, and the second one in particular (Brixton Academy) was absolutely fantastic, in my top 10 or 20 gigs easily. The Hyde Park show in 2014 when they just came out and played all of Superunknown was something special too.

Superunknown is an absolute masterpiece. 1994 was a vintage year for rock in general and that album is the best one of that year in a field with some very tough competition. It's genuinely on the same level as all time classics of old like Master of Reality, Meddle, etc.

Agreed.  That comment above from yer man is ridiculous.  Getting to see 4th of July live in Hyde Park ON the 4th of July was special.

There are some excellent songs on King Animal too - Bones of Birds and By Crooked Steps being two examples.

Nasty, rotten shit as usual.  I was going to head out and mow the lawn - lovely evening for it - but now I think I'll bate a few magpies to death below in the shed instead.

Has the video been pulled by youtube already?

Loving what I've heard thus far, just watching the video of "A Bellyful of Salt and Spleen" reminded of Bryan Ferry with Barney's antics.
The day Bryan Ferry lost his mind.

Brilliant album...Again!  They never let you down.

These 2 minutes of sounds could be in the middle of a Mr.Bungle album without raising too much of an eyebrow, tbf.

Utter bollicks.
