Metal Discussion / Re: Faith No More Sol Invictus

It's leagues below the other Patton FNM albums – just doesn't compete, but at the same time I'm glad it exists.  Rise Of The Fall, Black Friday, and From The Dead are probably the worst songs the band ever released but the others are 6s and 7s out of 10 for me, with Matador and Cone of Shame being the real highlights.  I agree with PS above, the latter could have been pulled from Tomahawk.

I noticed a real decline in Patton starting with Tomahawk's Oddfellows which is nearly 13 years ago now, and Sol Invictus came 2 years after that.  Everything since is completely worthless and that version of Mr Bungle currently doing the rounds is cardinal sin – they should have called themselves "The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny", because Bungle it isn't.

There may be some truth to that agoraphobia thing, but I'd say it's also true he used it as the perfect excuse to step away from Faith No More at the time.  Money talks, but I can't see it happening again as Patton just doesn't seem to have the interest.

Very happy to have caught them at the Olympia in '09 and Hyde Park in '14, where they I believe it was the debut Motherfucker and Superhero, and as much as I loved the show I thought both of those songs were limp.

KFAD and Angel Dust are my two faves.  Also don't get the hate for AOTY - I've a real soft spot for it!  Check out this show from the AOTY tour - if they'd played Stripsearch it would have been the greatest gig from any band, of all time.

They haven't been here in 6 years and it will be nearly 7 by the time this one comes around.  They didn't hit Ireland during the recent (Oct 2024!) album tour so I'm not in the least bit surprised by the hunger.

Don't get me started on that English/Swedish version thing.  I'm a Lovelorn Crime guy all the way, while 100% in the Allting Tar Slut camp if you catch my drift.

A couple of people rightly mentioned Comfortably Numb - Lovelorn Crime could be considered Opeth's Comfortably Numb...

Another Opeth one while I'm at it, from their incredible latest album, A Story Never Told is kind of in the same vein as the one above...

Mastodon's Gigantium is a slow song.  Not sure if that makes Brent Hinds' cracker at the end a slow solo, but I'll include it here just in case...

Like Suicide from Superunknown...

And the song title itself didn't set off any alarm bells?

The penny may have dropped alright had I known the song title at that age of 9 or 10.

The first two albums were really good, but they (he) reached another level and peaked with Meliora and Prequelle.  The one standout track from the last album is Watcher In The Sky - and while not a bad record overall, I could clearly see decline.  Between that and this latest effort it's obvious to me he's found a formula he's content with that's earning him a decent few bob.  Again, while not being bad it lacks any sort of bollocks and has no sharp edges anywhere.  Safe and harmless, for a younger audience maybe.

Disappointed to hear this, selfishly, being a big fan of the band for many's the year.  Steve is an absolutely vicious vocalist with massive stage presence, and is an immense song-writer.  I'd listen to any of the later 3 albums as much as I would the early stuff - they're all insane.

Best of luck to Steve, and to the rest of the band for the future.

Or is it a new song altogether?  What's "Gnosterces"?

Secret Song spelt backwards

::) Good spot.  At the end of California though?

No Code is their chef-d'oeuvre for me, top to bottom, followed by Vitalogy, Ten and Yield. I'd pick one or two songs from Versus and Binaural that I'd have any interest in today, and would place both albums miles behind Riot Act.  They fell off a cliff after than when they handed song writing duties over, becoming the dour radio-rock-by-numbers, Eddie Vedder and Friends.

I'd agree with the comments on Matt Cameron.  He's a master behind the kit in Soundgarden, his style unlike anyone else I can think of, but is a complete misfit for PJ and vice versa.  Having said that, he wrote the best tracks on Riot Act (and more), and it sounds like Matt's mitts are all over the new single too, which is the best thing I've heard from them in 20 years.  Could be wrong about his input here of course.

So what I'm saying is, I'd rather drop my balls into boiling water than pay €200 to stand in a field listening to Vedder pontificate about Ukraine or Trump or some other shit, when I caught the No Code tour in the Point in '96 for 16 or 17 punts.

Quote from: Pagan Saviour on February 07, 2024, 02:14:03 PMAll three albums are essential for different reasons. The first was my favourite for the longest time but in recent years have come to regard Disco Volante as their magnum opus. California is the one that gets slightly less air time though it is still of high standard.

I'm absolutely perplexed by what they're doing at the minute. Got raging wrath when it dropped and dug it in the moment (Maybe I was just in the humor of it) but since have hardly played it. Scott Ian's presence is highly annoying.

I'd go with Disco Volante > California > Debut, in that order.  They are all completely different and could be the work of 3 separate bands.  California is an absolute masterpiece, but even then Disco is the one I return to most.

They began life as a thrash metal band, hence the current incarnation that no one asked for or wanted.  It's a nice add-on to the collection with some banging songs, and it sounds great, but it's not really a Mr Bungle album is it?

They could possibly get the old gang back together, but that won't include the sax player Theo Lengyel who was arrested and charged with the murder of his missus at the beginning of the year.
