By sweet chin music I mean he laid his boot into the drummers cymbals because the China kept falling over. Cue the sound guy (who looked to have gotten a bollocking after the first song) running onstage to fix them. Every time I've seen them he seems to be visibly dissatisfied with something.

Gigs and Festivals / Re: Bolzer: Dublin Belfast, June 2023

I enjoyed the limelight show. The first band bored the arse off me. Abduction were great, good sound and some interesting riffs.
Bolzer were ferocious as always, once they got going. First time seeing them since Lese Majesty came out so I was disappointed that they didn't play one of the proper tracks from it. Surely they're due another release soon.
I've seen them a few times now, is Okoi always such a stickler for sound and monitors etc? He gave the sweet chin music to the China cymbal at one point

Bagged one there thank fuck. 77.90 for one ticket including postage. Worth it to see Emperor indoors though, especially in the current economic shitshow. I can see this selling out fast

Everywhere in Sligo town is effectively shut, but sure fuck it the nail bar is still open... worse still, they're full of huns in getting them done.
I take it hun means something different in Sligo
In all seriousness, the inaction of the UK government is fucking criminal. It's pathetic that the the DUP are willing to toe the line with London at all costs, even with something as serious as this. Even Jamie fucking Bryson has been tweeting about taking an all island approach. Everyone I've spoken to on either side of the community is utterly miffed at the lack of concrete advice, everything is up in the air.
What magic 'science' do Boris and Arlene know about that recommends doing the opposite of the rest of Europe? Its funny how the DUP are so concerned about scientific evidence now.

Metal Discussion / Re: Questionable production: amazing results

I'm really not a fan of Scott Burns production at all, but he produced some of my favourite metal albums. Morbid angel, death, sepultura etc. These are good despite the production though and you've just grown up with them that way. If they had better production initially, fuck knows how good they could have been.
In the case of Burzum and the likes, the minimalist production goes hand in hand with the material and enhances it somewhat. Filosofem really has that ancient, hypnotic vibe. Nattens madrigal and pure holocaust are also great examples of raw recordings where the riffs really stand out and the production just suits the pace and atmosphere of the music.

I see Stravinsky mentioned. For more russian stuff, can't go wrong with Mussorgsky, Night on bald mountain and Pictures at an exhibition. Pretty much any of Rachmaninoffs piano concertos and symphonies too. Also check out his prelude in C# minor .
For Bach, I'd also recommend his organ works, particularly Simon Preston or Karl Richters recordings. Some seriously overwhelming bass going on.
For more relaxing stuff I'd recommend Bachs cello suites, particularly Mischa Maiskys 80s recordings. Ludivico Einaudi is great too as someone mentioned.

Never got into sinister, although Coven and Henbane are some of my favourites from the last decade. An ep would do well from CdG right enough. I'd love to see Bölzer playing their new material this year. New ba on the way so I'll not make it away to catch them.

On the Morbid Angel theme, the first fast riff in "Fall from grace" that has the blast beat has always been a favourite.

Ah lads, Dopesmoker is fucking ace - though I prefer the original Jerusalem release, it's fatter and heavier mix, just so tasty. Many times it rattled the fuck out of the sides of my old van when it came out. I used to love driving around in the sun listening to it. It was hard to go back to Holy Mountain or Vol 1 afterwards, they sound so thin in comparison. The Sciences... yeah, got to agree with Pentagrimes, it's not great at all. Hopefully, it's not the end for them all the same.
Don't get me wrong, I listened to it flat out when I first got into Sleep. I think at this point in my life I just don't have the time to really get the most out of long releases. A nice fat mix of holy mountain would be ace though. Am I right in thinking that the holy mountain recordings were supposed to be demos, but they ended up using them for the release?

I didn't even bother listening to the sciences, once I realised two songs weren't even new. I think one other track is supposed to be Pike fucking about with his toggle switch. I had totally forgotten about it now, must go and actually listen to it.
As much as I love Sleep and went to see them at the 09 reunion, they really are living off the mythology surrounding dopesmoker.
I would agree with you there pentagrimes, the earlier stuff wins over dopesmoker. I think the only time I've listened to the whole thing since my teens was the drive to the last siege (I live in the North)

Ulver- Bergtatt. Amazingly sophisticated music to have been made by a bunch of teenagers. The LP arrived yesterday and it looks and sounds fantastic. Despite being relatively familiar with Ulver's early stuff, and owning several of their non-BM albums, I've somehow never picked the classics up, so these Century Media LP editions are most welcome. I'd like to grab the snazzy boxset but it's a bit steep for me these days. It's a pity that Garm isn't making any metal music anymore beyond guest appearances here and there.
Reading the biography on the inlay really pushes home just how fertile and precocious the Norwegian BM scene was back in the 90s. There was no end of young, creative and serious musicians for bands to choose from. I need a time machine...
Is there a vinyl boxset reissue? I had seen the cd one but I've got the individual albums bar the demo on cd. I seriously need nattens on vinyl anyhows.
Bergtatt and Nattens Madrigal are two of my favourite albums from that era, normally break them out at this time of year too.

Just judging by the photos online, two boards with about 8+ pedals on each not including power supplies. Mainly boutique type pedals

Tis a tasty sounding pedal. Having looked at Mikes pedalboard rigs now, you'd need deep pockets to start chasing those tones pretty comprehensive pedal board(s).

I think Mike from Yob uses a compressor too, something to do with greater note clarity/separation. He does have quite a chunky and articulate tone, definitely not fuzz territory. Haven't a baldy about Pallbearer though.
Pretty sure it's just compressor for cleans. The QM is based on the Ross Distortion which definitely has some fuzz qualities to it but I agree his tone isn't exactly fuzzy.
You're right, I checked the interview I was thinking about on the earthquaker devices site and he talks about how his inspiration for the Quantum Mystic was a Ross distortion running through an mxr dyna comp (or vice versa). The compressor must have tightened up the Ross or something.
