Just fired in an order for a few Sabbat CDs and a tshirt. I nabbed Envenom, The Dwelling and Karisma... allow the obsession to formally begin 

Edit. I picked up the Evoke LS because the image is class but don't tell the Japanese that I haven't bought that album or they'll bar me from entry...

Landed yet? I've actually been listening to loads of SABBAT and METALUCIFER lately! "Karisma";is possibly my favourite LP. Their albums always offer a different twist of madness.

I like that "Animals" LP quite a lot.

I was listening to Ulver- "Bergtatt" and followed it up with Ved Buens Ende- "Written in Waters", following a bit of a Skoll thread. His bass playing is so creative and adds dimensions to whatever he appears on I would argue. His resume is ridiculous when you add to the two above mentioned his contributions across the various epochs of Arcturus. And yet, you never really hear him get mentioned in discussions about Norwegian BM. I am sure I've never read, heard or seen an interview with him so maybe I'll have to google that later to see if such a thing exists. He was also on the Fimbulwinter demo with the Dimmu Borgir dudes but I'm less familiar with that recording- another one that's been on the shopping list for a while now. The man seemed to have been at the heart of the early days of the Norwegian black metal movement but exists almost as a shadow. I think it's fair to say that his playing has massively influenced Gjendød, and that influence is one of their most lethal secret weapons in my onion. A secret legend?

Skoll rules! I'm sure there is a reasonable amount of f appreciation out there Andy. Have you listened to the Radical Research blogs?

For me, that melancholy was the primary strand in the '90s through to present times: Dreamsfear to Death The Leveller. Graveyard Dirt to The Pale Fall. Thy Sinister Bloom, Geasa, Waylander. All different. Did regional accents help differentiate them internationally? Would those outside of Ireland really recognise them, relate to them or care?

Then you have SCALD. The Dagda. Epoch. Misfits (not mishits) one and all exploring their own preoccupations.

Not that I find national identity a particularly powerful or relevant selling point. ANUBI is my favourite band from Lithuania. Peers like POCCOLUS and HA LELA sound nothing alike. I don't like them more or less for the shared origin. But we join the dots, looking for meaning, whether a sequence or parallel even exists.
