The axe that Nicholas Cage's character forges in the film Mandy is based on the 'F' from Celtic Frost's logo.

Johan Johansson also got Stephen O'Malley to play guitar on the soundtrack for it.

Recommend checking out Shabaka Hutchings other projects if you're into the Comet Is Coming. Particularly the band Sons of Kemet.

Had heard about these lads mentioned somewhere/by someone not long ago and forgot to check them out. Nice one! Watched some of the live set posted earlier in the thread and they sound whopper. Has a Hawkwind meets Thee Oh Sees thing going on. Killing Joke immediately comes to mind for the vocals on earlier stuff for sure, but as mentioned above this new one is more outta the FNM/Melvins playbook. I love all these things, so looking forward to getting stuck in.

Wasn't it Albini's whole thing that he never overly compressed anything and let the natural sound of the band and their dynamics shine through in the mix!?

Different strokes and all that, but I'd be of the opposite opinion that there'd only be a handful of things he's put his name to where he wasn't the right man for the job. On a side note, Fugazi just released their version of In On The Killtaker they did with him but never saw the light of day ('til now).

Anyway. This new album sounds class having given it a full listen this morning. Lovely surprise!

Great to see the Róisín rammed for a metal gig. I got word that it'll be a yearly thing from chatting to the guy who runs the place. Primordial were  fairly class as usual, cool to see them in such a small club setting. Alan Averil was some dose though in between songs. Had to tune it out to enjoy the set

Quote...will be a fairly gas sight to see those two crowds mingle in the smoking area.

If the organisers were truly on the ball they'd stick on a DJ playing exclusively hair metal up there.

Doors advertised for 7pm, so knowing the Róisín, Genuflection will probably start at 7:30 sharp. Primordial probably sometime after 9pm. They'll want an hour for change over to the two bands on the midnight slot.

I see there's the weekly drag night on upstairs, will be a fairly gas sight to see those two crowds mingle in the smoking area.

The Blue Note have been doing these merch fairs for a few smaller/local weekenders (ie. Going Coastal) the past year or two. Usually it's a DIY, local affair where bands playing will set up their own merch stalls. It's probably the same craic again for this, but there'll be the likes of Blowtorch Records there and they'll sell vinyl from whoever is on their roster for example (they represent two or three of the bands on this bill). That's my guess going on similar past events. Will be worth the look anyway for sure.

Okus had to pull their gig which is a shame, was looking forward to a bit crustiness upstairs in the small room after Primordial.

QuoteAs cliche as it would be, I think the title track should have ended the album with Victory being the first song.

Maybe clichéd but I'd agree. The run of album openers from TTND up to WGMHF were all very much of that anthemic, immediate style they've been doing for years now and it works well to kick off an album. Nail Their Tongues from the last one really deviated from that in a great way and set the stage for what was a darker, more melancholic album overall (bar the 2nd track and the ballad).

The opener on this new one seems to go for that 'immediate banger' buzz but falls short. Victory would have fitted better imo too. Anyway, fuck it I'm probably talking out of my hole having not given it enough time yet. Here goes...

It's interesting alright to see how they're perceived maybe a bit more critically by an Irish audience, judging on what I've read over the years on this board and MI before it. It makes some sense though as many indeed have been sticking with them since the early days or at least have given the back catalogue a lot of time, so would naturally just have stronger opinions on their evolution and whether they like it or not. They're probably just held to a slightly higher standard in Ireland, and I see them akin to a band like Voivod -- where even their lesser output is nearly just a result of the high standard they have set in the past, and the progression and evolution is just a matter of differing tastes for some. It's all pretty damn good to be fair.

I discovered the band through TGW on the year it came out and quickly bought Spirit The Earth Aflame after, alongside borrowing a mate's copy of Storm Before Calm. Those three are still probably my favourites, and I loved the evolution in sound on TTND. Since then, I pick certain tracks from 'Redemption' and 'Where Greater Men' to listen to but not too often. 'Exile' was a brilliant return to form.

This one, albeit after only listen... disappointing! All Against All is so far above par compared to the rest that it sounds like it was written in a different (and far more creative) period of the band's career entirely. Will give it more time, but likely not a lot.

New Hexvessel track from an upcoming album...

Bit of a Ulver/Borknagar buzz off it. Never really heard them sound this dark and heavy on any of their other stuff.

Reveal! - Doppelherz

A fairly mental but enjoyable listen. There's Bauhaus era post punk, crust/hardcore, at times absurd King Crimson like influences...but all played like a black metal band in the end. Production and guitar tones are deadly.
