Bad news, Warriors of Genghis khan.
Under the guillotine by kreator - could listen to that on repeat for a week and still wouldn't get sick of it
Dittohead
First riff in War Ensemble
The savage bit in the middle of war is my shepherd
Blinded by fear
The beginning of Over the wall
Jesus I could go on but that'll do for now

Flotsam & Jetsam - Doomsday for the Deceiver, Hard on You
Coroner - Tunnel of Pain, Sirens, Serpent Moves, Grin (Nails Hurt)
Ah I could be here for the rest of the year...
The opening riff of "Fink Dial" by Iron Monkey still makes me want to throw a table at someone. Meanest riff ever.
"Procreation of the Wicked" is the greatest metal riff of all time.
Could be here all day too but here are a few.
Napalm Death - Diktat (the slow riff at around 2.41) / Hierarchies
Life Of Agony - Broken Valley (from 2.50 in)
Metallica - Eye of the Beholder (That backwards little riff before he starts "doesn't matter what you see...") / Fade To Black (That end heavy riff is possibly the greatest of all time / Phantom Lord / Blackened
Killing Joke - The Great Cull
Def Leppard - Gods of War
Down - Lifer

Napalm Death - "Cure for the Common Complaint"
Dark Angel - "Act of Contrition"
Cobalt - "Arsonary"
Crowbar - "Nothing"
Iron Monkey - "666 Pack"
Death - everything they've released.
Down 'Stone the Crow'. Beautiful interplay between the guitars on that.
AC/DC Jaibreak
That opening riff is just grooving
Love the change of riff smashing in for the pre-chorus
Then the chorus is the opening riff again but louder
So simple, but rockin'!
https://youtu.be/HRo2m6RYJpI
The little breakdown just after the first chorus in "Leave Scars" by Dark Angel. Outrageously hefty.
Prong - Whose Fist is it Anyway
Throwing out a few more here cause I'm bored in work
A. I. R anthrax
Life demise Unanimated
Empire falls primordial
Hell awaits slayer
Flag of hate kreator
Babylons pride decapitated
Nothing obscure there in fairness
Melvins - Honey Bucket :abbath:
Bolt Thrower are surely the masters of ridiculously catchy chunky riffs that get lodged in your brain
No Guts, No Glory
Anti-Tank
World Eater
When Cannons Fade
Remembrance
Laid To Waste
The list goes on and on!
It's probably a bit obvious but Master of Puppets is the best ever in my opinion. Others I can think of:
Death - Symbolic
Deftones - My Own Summer
Black Sabbath - Symptom of the Universe
Mastodon - Blood and Thunder
Cannibal Corpse - From Skin to Liquid (25 seconds in)
Pantera - This Love (2:47)

Prong - Whose Fist is it Anyway
How that hasn't been used as a WWF wrestler's walk on music, I'll never know. Maybe it has.
Far too many to think about but I suppose here is a good place to declare that the opening riff to Desolate Shrine's Unmask The Face Of False is probably the heaviest riff of all time
https://darkdescentrecords.bandcamp.com/track/unmask-the-face-of-false
Speaking of Today Is The Day, the opening/main riff to this is crushing:

Melvins - Honey Bucket :abbath:
Absolutely agreed.,every riff in that song is monstrous. And "Boris".

It hasn't but snap your fingers snap your neck has 8)
Crowbar - The Lasting Dose. Every time I listen to that I feel like Kirk Windstein is sitting on my face. The bit when the verse starts. Sweet Jesus it's so heavy. If treacle had a sound it would be that.
Seems a good thread to muse over it - Nirvana have more good riffs than I've had hot dinners.
Smells Like... made me want to explore guitar music more, but when I first got into metal, I became "too cool" to listen to Nirvana.
A few years and a dose of cop-on later, I got into them again and fuck me, there's so many belters in their small back catalogue; especially on Bleach and Incesticide.
And honestly, Milk It is one of the nastiest sounds I've ever had come out of my speakers.
Seeing as there's a thread about new Today is the Day material, it reminded me of the riffs from Mayari.
Some more riffffs that come to mind today:
Faith no More: Surprise! You're Dead
Prong: Another Worldly Device (quite a few have mentioned Prong, hadn't mentioned them before, my bad)
Motorhead: Mean Machine
Bad Brains: Big Takeover
Cathedral: Vampire Sun
Cathedral: Hopkins
S.O.D.: March of the SOD
Ministry: Psalm 69 (verse riff)
Sepultura: Troops of Doom (re-recording- on 'Schizophrenia')
Carcass: Butcher's Apron (riff at 0.43)
Running Wild: Raw Ride
Annihilator: Alice in Hell
Ghoul: Ghetto Blasters (riff at 1.08)
Soundgarden: Rusty Cage (an intriguing sounding one, not the usual powerchord stuff but still very heavy)
White Zombie: Creature of the wheel (a deep cut from the now defunct WZ, riff is monstrous)

What's so lol-worthy?
Exactly. Nirvana had plenty riffs.
Some great riffs on Bleach by Nirvana

Nirvana had dozens of amazing riffs alright. Though check out where they nicked the Milk It riff from:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0lue7MTAvA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0lue7MTAvA)
Pantera - Live Through Me (Hells Wrath) is a cracker. As is 5 Minutes Alone and the slow riff of Domination. Pantera had a wealth of great riffs though.
Sepultura - Dead Embryonic Cells
And while I'm loathe to mention that geebag Robb Flynn, the main riff to Old is top drawer too.
Speaking of Flynn, Vio-Lence - Liquid Courage
Exodus - Only Death Decides
Alice in Chains - We Die Young
Cathedral - North Berwick Witch Trials
This particular one from Born of Fire https://youtu.be/mN2NXfeVQvQ?t=117
The bass breakdown in Morbid Angels 'Suffocation', filthy!!!
The opening riff on Domination and also on Day of Suffering by MA also. Like a kick in the nuts
On the Morbid Angel theme, the first fast riff in "Fall from grace" that has the blast beat has always been a favourite.
Yep it's amazing, what a band :abbath:
Storage days revisited:
https://youtu.be/dl9zP1kj5Dw
"Alchemy" by Brains from Cork is a good wee rocker https://brainscork.bandcamp.com/track/alchemy
It's far from my "favourite" riff, but it came into my head when I saw this thread and made me realise I haven't listened to it in about 6 years.
Morbid Angel - Where The Slime Live (all of it)
Akercocke - Penance (from about 1:32 (https://youtu.be/04boPlvCqWk))
Akercocke - Footsteps Resound In An Empty Chapel (from 2:20 (https://youtu.be/MQr6T3hay-o) but also the whole song is fuckin chock full of top shelf riffs)
Slabdragger - Shrine Of Debauchery (from 8:20 (https://youtu.be/qVD-_S5zAtQ) and also the whole song. And the whole album. Merciless)
Old Man Gloom - Shuddering Earth (4:49 (https://youtu.be/Wpq-VT0py-c))
Also lots already mentioned in this thread but a good few missed, will think of a couple more later when I'm not meant to be working
ILENKUS - Over the fire, under the smoke.
I never really listened to these guys before as I heard they were a hardcore band but I saw them at the siege and they are so much more than that. Picked up the album and it's bloody unreal. Definitely one of the finest albums I've heard from an Irish band.
Helmet - In The Meantime. The chunkiness of it.
Satyricon - Mother North.
Not a band I particularly care for, but that's a deadly riff.
Since they just got announced as the support for COC, I'm gonna throw in Spirit Adrift as my riff of the year at 3:56 of their track Angel & Abyss, pretty much the last three minutes of this song nearly gets me headbanging in my chair .

My Dying Bride: Like Gods Of The Sun is rifftastic, that main/verse riff is amazing.

A Kiss to Remember (especially the intro to it played on the bass) is a amazing.
Fuck, Paradise Lost have stacks - Jaded, Shades of God, Rotting Misery, Shattered, Once Solemn, Embers Fire, Joys of the Emptiness, Pity the Sadness, Dead Emotion, Eternal...
Grand Magus - Iron Will

Vallenfyre - Odious Bliss
Van Halen - Dead or Alive
S.O.D. - March of the S.O.D.
Queen - Keep Yourself Alive
Bon Jovi - Livin' on a Prayer
Goatwhore - In Deathless Tradition
Listening to some Candlemass on the walk in, the main riff in If I Ever Die and the verse riff in Lucifer Rising are mighty.
.
MGLA - Exercises in Futility VI
When it kicks in after the clean guitar intro always sounds powerful
The opening riff to this is simple but great, a bit Candlemassy IMO:
https://youtu.be/53k34zAeJJQ

https://youtu.be/Sr4rmY6bTSk?t=51

Anaal Nathrakh - When Humanity is Cancer
Iommi - Time is Mine
Cannibal Corpse: Staring Through The Eyes of The Dead. (Strange yet compelling riff).
So many savage riffs on that album.
Agreed. An Experiment in Homicide has so many deadly parts and riffs. The Pick Ax Murders also has a great simple main riff!
Classic riff for me is this. It's part bassline and part riff but it's great

The entire of Metal of Honor is solid gold though.
