What is it aside from a few tunes that keeps him in Maiden? His live act is completely distracting and at odds with the way the rest of the band perform.
I did laugh a serious amount at this but I've never actually been bothered by it at all I remember being 13 seeing maiden for the first time and thought janicks fucking around was deadly and added to the show

Bruce is the frontman, and even though he covers a lot of ground he doesn't look half the twat Janick does.

I wouldn't argue with that, but yeah, he's the frontman, it's his job to be the centre of attention. Plus, charisma gets you a long way.
I'm torn. I always found him difficult, even crimgeworthy, to watch but in a roundabout way he does something to make their stageshow look something more than just a bunch of lads rocking out. He adds a kind of by-gone age feel to what they do that sets them apart from the absolute bland and homogenous metal band look that exists today..everyone looking angry, either a Hetfield or Kerry King look to them, just look at any death metal band, if you weren't into metal you'd find it difficult to distinguish one band from another.
Dickinson fills a stage and Harris is excellent, Murray is a great guitarist but he's got a kind of transgender hooker/camp look to him that doesn't exactly scream leather and spikes. Nicko is a very good entertainer too and Smith whose soloing I adore is fairly bread and butter looking. So Gers in a really odd way, like Dickinson, reflects that bombastic, twee, over the topness that runs through the music. He's got a kind of power metal jester vibe to him.
All that said, I still can't stand watching him. It's a paradox of sorts. It shouldn't work but for some reason it works. A bit like seeing a beautiful female cousin, you know it's wrong but you can't look away either :laugh:

That's because Bruce is only half the height of Janick.
Janick is ok. He's performing. I prefer when performers look like they're enjoying being there, playing music for a living, touring the world on the strength of their songs, than dour faced lads whose eyes never leave the neck of their guitar. Granted, he overdoes it a bit and there is a middle ground, yes, but give me that over the fucker who never moves or engages with their audience at all.
Besides, the kids who caught that guitar with their foreheads will have a great memory of the gig if the concussion hasn't robbed it from them already.

I met Janick once when he came into a shop I was working in where he lived in England. Dressed like an absolute goon. Double white denim and a frilly scarf kind of job. I knew Maiden were about to go off on tour so I said something to that effect and he replied with some bizarre comment about biting the heads off bats and gave me an odd 'evil metal guy' look. Pure weirdo.

I'd refer to A Real Dead One from when it was just Gers and Murray. Some really ropey sounding rhythm guitar playing on that.
Why do people want Rock Stars to look and act like some lad that works in Tescos? As much as he makes me cringe, I'd much rather him and Bruce bounding around than some lad just standing there keeping it humble and modest. It's Iron Maiden ffs they're meant to be larger than life and a bit twee, fey, camp and cheesy.

On stage theatrics have a place in heavy metal for sure but when Jimi Hendrix was messing about with his guitar on stage he wasn't putting anyone in danger.
I know, it's a real pity that on the very first gig of his budding career he had this unfortunate accident.

Was never a fan of his playing and the dancing or whatever it is is no worse in terms of mild embarrassment than eddies appearance during the encore. Sure, he looks like a bit of a twit, but he's grand. Part of the furniture at this stage.
It's great that we can freely bash maiden (albeit deservedly) on this forum. I got banned on the old forum once for calling bollox on them playing too much of their shit new material before.

Been a Maiden fan since the very early 80s, i.e. since long before Gers, and still am...yet his idiotic on-stage antics make me cringe every time I watch any live footage...things could be so cool if he just concentrated on his live playing and started acting normally on stage...

Shitting on Maiden's pomp is a weird one. People have always been a bit high brow about NWOBHM, even in metal circles. Big festivals and their associated discussions are full of people decrying the classics as being for smelly old patch jacket cringesters whilst themselves fist pumping and slam dancing all their fucking hilarious suburban angst out. Some people only want doom metal bands who all sound like Master of Reality whilst scoffing off a good, fun bit of Korn.
Tell you what, though, I love how all of Iron Maiden look like a cross between Richie and the girl he's trying to shag in Bottom.
