Switched them. Is it missing the one you need?
I wouldn't say I "need" it, but it was hands down the most used emoticon on MI. Don't remember it?
Is there any way to put the different forums in tabs at the top of each page instead of having to go back to the main index each time?
Is there a way to go to the newest post in a thread when you click on it rather than just going to the last page?

Done! Added a "Board list" button to the top menu.

When there's new posts in a thread you should see a red "New" box beside the title. When you click it, you'll jump to the oldest unread post
Cheers man!
Absolutely love this site already, Cheers for putting it together.
MW is a grand aul name for this site, But would you consider getting a domain that would associate it a bit more with local scene/this country?
I know metalireland is copyright, as well as irishmetal.com. But who knows, maybe metaleire.ie or metaleire.net?
I wouldn't mind chipping in for a domain name and get a good logo going.
Basically just get a bit of branding going and promotion of the site at some stage. I know its a non-profit metal discussion site, but would be cool to hand out flyers/stickers at gigs to promote the site a bit when there is an established brand/name going with a decent logo.
Again, no big deal. I'm chuffed to bits with how things are at the minute.
I agree with you completely.
I was originally planning to go for a more "Irish" name but couldn't think of anything. Eventually settled on MW since I wanted to get something set up ASAP, but I'm aware it sounds a lot more general rather than specific to Ireland. Didn't want to go for something too bland like "irishmetalforum.com" either. One name I had considered was "MetalInTheEire.com" but I though that might be a bit cheesy. It's definitely something I'll consider if there's much support behind it.
Logo/branding definitely needs sorted soon. I'm getting fed up looking at the plain text "Metal Warfare" at the top of the forum, and the mountain/moon in the header which came default with the forum theme and has absolutely no relevance to the site, and makes it look a bit amateur if anything. I had asked about getting a logo made but I'm not sure if any progress has been made. Might even be with getting a quick one done on Fiverr in the meantime. The site would benefit from having a bit more identidy.
Flyers etc is something I had considered but I don't know how it works. Can I just walk around at a gig and hand them out or do I need permission from the venue? Do I need to pay? Do people even pay attention to flyers? If it seemed worthwhile then I'd happily get some printed and send some out to anybody who wants to help.
Cheers for the input!
How do you feel about irishmetal.net? I see it's available to buy on several different domain name sites for fairly cheap.
Yeah a good logo would be decent man. Even something off a logo creator site would do the job for now as a placeholder.
I knocked up a few examples on flamingtext.com haha.
As for the flyers, thats a good question. Could very well be down to each venue, It is advertising at the end of the day. Could do it certainly outside venues.
A new domain could happen, but I'm unsure about irishmetal.net for a few reasons
1. I know this site is riding on the coat tails of MI, but Id like MW to be it's own thing. Irishmetal is really just metalireland flipped
2. It's also very similar to irishmetarchives and I don't want to be encroaching on their territory
Irishmetalwarfare.com?
Or maybe I'm just overthinking it. Either way, it's probably best to see what others think before throwing money into another domain.
I didn't know flaming text still existed! Could work as a temporary fix. There's also the old placeholder I had up originally
(https://metalwarfare.com/logo.png)
Yeah fair enough man! Irish metal warfare is decent too!
Forgot about irishmetalarchives, thats fair enough.
Nice wee placeholder alright. Whatever you think yourself buddy, I just love coming to the site :)
I'd nearly leave it as Metal Warfare now that it's going, could always just have a tagline on the main forum like on your image (irish metal forums) just so lads know when they arrive on.
Anyway I just came to post this and see if it works: (https://niketalk.com/styles/default/xenforo/NTemojis/laugh.gif)
Should be it added now!

That drippy logo thats up now is horrible lol.

Feel free to go through the list and find something which works! :P
While you're trying to find something that works perhaps use Impact font for now.
It has a couple of things going for it.
Its clear and legible.
I wouldn't suggest it as a permanent fixture, but from a design aesthetic its infinitely better than the one in current use
And a better suggestion could be made or found that would become the font of choice in future.
METAL WARFARE
Right, I'll give it an hour and if there's no other suggestions then I'll switch it to Impact until I get something permanent sorted!
Update: done! It's not Impact but hopefully it'll do. Now I'm just waiting for somebody to tell me it's Jimmy Saville's favourite font or something like that...
Looks good.
Yeah that's much better than the drippy logo.
I guess I was alone in liking the drippy font logo then
Ok it isn't impact, but I will do my best to try think of GODFLESH every time I turn up all the same.
Jokes aside, much better.
Also it's a fucking logo. Does anyone really give a shite? It is the content that matters.
 Woohoo!
Get a filthy Conqueror style logo to go with the name
The jizz logo had an odd charm of its own. I almost miss it.
You're welcome to apply your own jizz to the screen if you miss it
Can we have an option to see thread started by and thread last posted to by?
I'm guessing you're on mobile and you're talking about the page where you see a list of all the topics?
I can look into it. Not sure how to best go about it since it'll take up space and I don't want it getting too cluttered. Add an additional line below "Started by X" maybe?
I am indeed on mobile!
Have you just recently added a "new" tag to threads?
Just a quick one on the site name.
I like Metal Warfare.
There's more than enough 'Irish' named sites on the go, I think.
The former Metal Ireland...
Metal Radio Ireland...
Burning Metal Ireland...
And my own Irish Metal Archive included.
There's even a shitload of them on Facebook and YouTube.
I've even been toying with completely rebranding myself.

The content on the front page needs to be updated more frequently. Otherwise it is pointless, and you'd be better off keeping the site as a forum only.
We've had a rake of gigs etc since the site opened and none have been covered. Not having a go at anyone but if that section is to work the pace needs to be picked up.
Do you realize what percentage of the front page content came straight from CT? And how he was saying all the time that if people wanted more X, Y or Z then they needed to do it and send it in?
Yep, well aware he did the lions share. But in the last 5 years or so there were quite a few people chipping in with quite a variety of content, I can think of five at least off the top of my head ,whereas in five months on metal warfare there's been one article from Grimey.
On MI, I believe CT used to get send material for review and he would divvy it up among those who would write reviews. I don't think there's a centralised submissions spot here where people are sending stuff into, so it looks like the onus is on the users to show a bit of initiative. The last two albums I picked up are the new Queensryche and The End Machine albums. I'll review them if you find two things to review? :)
I'm aware of the lack of content on the front page and I'm definitely to blame for laziness on my part. I'm not sure if I'll ever get round to creating much content myself, and other than Jamie putting in the effort for his interview with Sacrilegia (which I'm very thankful for) there's been no other user contributions. If anybody does want to contribute anything, then please do get in touch.
The idea of having material sent in for reviews might be worth looking into, but there's still the issue of getting the actual reviews written by somebody, and I don't want to be coming across as saying "everybody do free work for me while I do nothing" (although I guess in a way that's kind of what I'm actually saying). I might need to rethink the front page. Possibly just have it be gig listings, upcoming releases, and local resources, or something like that. Having the same thing sitting stagnant for months on end looks kinda bad.

Not much movement on this? I did about 3 live reviews in the latter years of MI so I wouldn't mind helping out and doing one or two album reviews every month or so.
Main page could have ->
Link to forum front and center. Then the headers for Reviews / Upcoming Releases / Gig listings / Local Resources (Links to Irish Metal Archive, Recording Studios in Ireland, other services like CD duplication, tshirt printing). As with MI could have the latest 3-5 reviews linked across.
Yo!
I could be wrong, but it seems to me like the search function currently only returns one result within a given thread. So, for example, if you do a search for "judas", you will get a few results, but only one for each thread, whereas it's safe to say that the "Now Playing" thread contains the word "Judas" at least a few dozen times. This is an illustration case I plucked out of the case to test with, but I've already noticed it with a few other search items.
Can this be checked and corrected if it is indeed the case? Thanks
That's the default behaviour as it prevents the search results from being flooded with results from the Now Playing thread if you search for "judas"
On the search page there's a checkbox for "Show results as messages" which will display all the individual posts in the way you're wanting

A strange thing has happened for me recently: on the unread topics page, the address/home/tab etc. bar is missing. I'm using Chrome on Android, and after checking when Chrome was last updated, it seems to coincide with that, so it's presumably an Android issue. Just said I'd mention it, it's only on that page it happens.
Screenshot attached.
I'm not sure what's going on there. That black bar at the bottom is odd too. Is it still happening, and does it only happen on this site, and on that specific page?
Intermittently happening, and only on that recent unread topics page, yeah. The black is presumably because I have the phone on dark mode.
It's not a big deal, I assume it'll resolve itself with the next update but I just said I'd mention it anyway.

One from the other day was Hällas, which I've just checked again and it's the same: getting three results with "Show results as messages" unchecked, but only one when it is checked.
Interesting. I'm seeing 3 results (4 now that your last post contained the word) with it unchecked.
I'm seeing 15 results with it checked. Do your search settings match the image attached?
Yes, they do match. Stab in the dark guess here, but if Search function operates on some kind of iteration, could the fact that I don't have access to one of the sub-forums be screwing up my search results compared to yours (or anyone else who has access to all the sub-forums, incl. notably KC's shit pit)?
There's definitely something weird happening but it's unrelated to the sub-forum access. I've checked with a test account and it's only showing the 1 result like you're seeing. Seems to be a permissions issue so I'll dig into this further. Thanks for letting me know!
Thanks to you, rather!

That's something which only ever shows up for your own account. Everybody only sees their own email, so nobodys email address has ever been visible to anybody else. That being said, it's confusing and serves no purpose so I've removed the button entirely.

ok cheers
Something that happens a lot is that, when I'm scrolling down I inadvertantly hit the 3 dots/report button on the left. Very annoying.
Is there anything in particular which is making it easy to hit? I could move things around but that could end up with something else being hit instead
No, it's just as I'm scrolling down, occasionally I'll hit it and the report box appears, I have to find & hit the same button on whatever post it was to get rid of it. It's probably just my big fat thumb, I wouldn't bother if nobody else is having an issue.
I get it too sometimes.
Can I get a screenshot of the box you're talking about? When I click the 3 dots I get a "Report to moderator" box at the bottom of the screen but I can tap anywhere and it disappears. What you're describing sounds a lot more annoying if you're having to find where to close it.
It's the same one, and that tap anywhere bit works - but here's the thing: it didn't before, which is why I brought it up in the first place. Might have been an update in the interval but now that it does that, problem sorted.
That's odd as there haven't been any changes made for at least a few weeks. If it appears again, try to grab a screenshot so I can figure out what's happening.
Sound.
There's another difference I just noticed: I tapped the 3 dots on your post above just for a look and the 3 dots were highlighted (highlit?) in the background. That wasn't the case before, hence having to hunt for thr right post.
Maybe a Chrome update? (I'm using Chrome on an Android phone.)

Just happened again and I had to find the right post to get rid of it, tapping elsewhere on the screen had no effect. It was in the Nightwish thread, if that's of any relevence. (No idea why it attached twice, sorry):

Interesting. Looks like something isn't loading correctly which is causing it to look like that. The blue text in your screenshot is also a lighter shade than it's meant to be and the emoji is messed up (white eyes and mouth instead of black). I'll have a look and see if there's any problems loading JavaScript or CSS in the background. Thanks!
Any considerations for adding a review section? Would bring some more views/awareness from social media sharing of review links and by extension potential users to the site...that could be both good and bad :)
Any poster that wants to contribute might be given access to a hidden section so that they can look at what's available for review and take one on. Or maybe an email list of reviewers - Surely can come up with a process that would work. Doesn't have to become a monster or a burden, could limit it to Irish releases only and if that works, branch out to others like MI had. Thoughts?
I like the idea, I doubt I'd be able to contribute much but do think it would be a bonus to the site to have a reviews section for Irish stuff particularly.
To be fair even a release round-up each week/month of Irish releases with a line or two and genre tag on new albums and EPs with a link to them would be a good handy start, and if anyone wanted to review one after the fact they could get in touch. Nothing overly hectic but more of a catalog of what's out, if you had a submissions email people would definitely send releases to it and maybe 3-4 of us here could help sift it and do up the little blurb list/genre tags and links. I'd help with that if you like.
The idea of a review section has been floated around a few times. At one point there was a front page on the site which had gig listings and a review section but it was fairly short lived, as there was only the one review submitted. There's no ads (intentionally) on the site so there's no income or way to compensate anyone for their work which makes it hard to set up a steady stream of new content. Ideally there would be a reliable source to cover new releases, but it's unfair to expect that from unpaid volunteers. I also have no experience or knowledge of how to plan and organise this kind of thing which makes it all the more difficult. I figured it would be better to switch the site to "forum only" rather than having a stale front page.
I'm not against the idea. I think it'd be great. I just have no idea how to make it happen. Did MetalIreland have some form of income, and were people paid for content?
I generally submitted reviews for free but CT did pay me £100 I think it was at one point as a thank you. But yeah, there was no formal arrangement and I was just happy to contribute. Not sure I would have the time or energy to dedicate to writing reviews these days but maybe I could fire out a few interviews with local bands. Irish local :P There are some good new bands knocking about who it would be interesting to hear from.

I don't think including a PayPal link on the site for maintenance/hosting costs would be a bad idea? A pay what you can type thing. I know the resource needs are small for a site with this many users and low demand type of traffic, but it wouldn't hurt. Could give you a few bob towards improvements.
The current running costs are fairly negligible so it's not really a concern unless the site got a lot bigger. The donation thing could be useful to help pay towards contributors with reviews etc, or maybe some kind of "tip jar" on each review which goes directly to the reviewer. If there's enough people genuinely interested in contributing, it's something I'd try to get set up again. I'd definitely need help setting it up/organising/running the whole operation. I can create a new sub-forum for anyone interested to talk about it further.
On the side, I was contacted earlier asking about placing an ad banner on the forum. How does everyone feel about it? I'm generally anti-ad, but if it's something related to the Irish metal scene then it'd be more like promoting something local which is kind of the entire purpose of the forum. Any ads would be relevant, non-intrusive, no horrible tracking bullshit, and I'd give logged-in users the option to disable them for people who really don't want to see them. Let me know what you all think.
Anything that keeps the site going, ads, tips, donations, whatever, I'm in, no worries.
Any other input? Only 1 response so far so I'm not sure if that means most people don't mind either way.
Go for it, man. A banner up the top is hardly a big deal, and if it helps the cause then full steam ahead I reckon.
Quote from: Hambeast on October 26, 2023, 10:36:56 AMAny other input? Only 1 response so far so I'm not sure if that means most people don't mind either way.
Solid finest here too, absolutely go for it, whatever helps.
Wouldn't bother me either, as long as it doesn't become intrusive obviously. But whatever helps keep the site going.
Yeah sure whatever keeps the lights on is sound :abbath:
Is there scope for a "From the Vaults" sort of section? That was one of the best bits of MI, but sure it's all lost to the aether.
A banner has been added to the top of the page. This is aimed to both help cover running costs for the site while also promoting something relevant to the topic of the forum. Let me know if there's any display or usability issues with the placement.
Looks the solid finest on the mobile site here anyway (an Invictus ad)
An odd oul banner or whatever won't hurt anyone and I don't think any of us would be adverse to the site generating a few pence for itself.
Also would read the reviews if there were any
I was glazed over in bed there having a wee scroll of a thread and accidentally hit the "report to moderator", and in a moment of "ara shite", I may have confirmed it (the report prompt went blue).
Not so much a site query, more a "I'm a fat-fingered dope, please ignore" notice
Would there be any way you can easily add a photo to your replies? I'm thinking of the likes of Now Playing thread. You take a snap of the cd/tape/vinyl artwork. Just went to fix a spelling mistake in the now playing thread and it generated a new post. Like so.
 it didn't do it that time. Probably I'm just mental from lack of sleep.
Dunno whether it was a blanket issue or just for me, but the site wouldn't load for an hour or two earlier today, the page just timed out. Back to normal now.
Chrome on an Android phone, other sites were fine.
I think it was mentioned before but the position of the "report to moderator" button, at least on the mobile version, is a pain. I keep hitting it while scrolling and there's no way of cancelling it so it blocks the whole screen. I have to reverse out and start again.
Tipping it again undoes it but you have to hit the right one, hard to find when you've scrolled past it.
Ahhhh! Cheers for the tip.

Any return on this? It's still acting funny for me. Test example: if I search the word 'Metallica' I get about 30 results (out of presumably many, many more instances). If I then check the 'Display results as messages' I only get around 9 results.
There's currently a few bugs with the forum. I'll most likely have to stick the forum in maintenance mode for a few hours at some point over the weekend while I look into it. It'll hopefully fix the search results and youtube embeds.

Is it the same thing every time? Missing banner and a huge empty space? I'm trying to think what would cause that because even if the image wasn't loading the space shouldn't be so big.
Yeah, same thing. Only happens occasionally, not every time and I've only seen it on the 'recent unread topics' page. It's no big deal, just thought I should mention it.

Twas messed up on Firefox for me. All good since though.
Does it happen to other users that certain embedded images don't appear? Sometimes I have to copy a link into a different browser to see all images in a thread. In the other browser I don't really have any Ghostery type things installed, so it could well be nothing stranger than that. Just curious.
Hasn't happened for me.
I'm using Chrome on an Android phone, for reference.
Any chance these all happen to be images hosted by facebook? Are you using a non-chrome browser or a vpn? I've noticed this issue and assumed facebook shittiness but maybe it requires further investigation.
Firefox browser, no VPN, but a typical array of uBlock, Ghostery, adblock. Just checked source of the last one I couldn't see and, sure enough, it's hosted on fbcdn.net, so it most likely is just Ghostery's tracker blocker doing what it's designed to do.
From a bit of testing it looks like everyone should be experiencing this issue no matter what their setup is.

https://scontent-otp1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/482327897_1071511105020420_1987045167673751904_n.jpg?_nc_cat=105&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=127cfc&_nc_ohc=THpvpOfOOTQQ7kNvgEBk89q&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-otp1-1.xx&_nc_gid=AWVfpNIWVU9MnvljVeBox1c&oh=00_AYEy45yHw94zbEe4KxFkbEWCWHrdwdoFRcbHYpO5bw8ztQ&oe=67D5F1C5
If the above example is broken for everybody it means it's a facebook issue and I'll need to find a way to cache images before they expire.
Unrelated to this issue, but you probably don't need to be running ublock origin, ghostery, and adblock all at the same time. Ublock by itself will handle all your adblocking/privacy/tracking needs. Having them all installed can cause conflicts which can reduce privacy and slow things down.
No image in the first post for me.

Good point. I installed uBlock and Ghostery on simple recommendation when I last updated my laptop a few years ago and have only recently begun to understand that uBlock does pretty much everything, making the others redundant. Should have occurred to me at that point that it could be worse than redundant to run them in parallel! Cheers man :abbath:
No image for me either
Bit late to the party but I can see the image
Ah no I'm only pulling your leg..
Crucifixion for me
Can't see it
I've looked into this further and I'm not sure there's any simple workaround. Facebook constantly changes image URLs so a link posted now won't work in the future. They're also blocking the MW server from downloading the images and hosting them myself, and using any 3rd party proxy would be an endless game of cat and mouse since facebook are actively preventing their content from being scraped.
It seems like the only automated solution would be to have the forum intercept any posts containing facebook images and forcing the poster's browser to fetch the image and post it as data, but I feel like that's a breach of trust so I'm not willing to do it.
There has to be something wrong here but I also noticed the site running a lot slower at the minute on mobile at least. Any connection?

Jesus it's over 3000 now. I'll look into this
Maybe Draiman tweeted about us :)
It's mainly coming from South America. Not sure if there's any reason for that. I'll look into setting up anti bot measures.
The site is now runnning through Cloudflare. Guest numbers are slowly dropping so it seems to be working. You may see an occasional captcha. Let me know if it becomes problematic. I hope to dial it back once I'm able to figure out why it's happening.
Nice one. Yeah it seems to be running the finest here now too, mad that it was all bots. Often seen a ton of guests when I logged in but never a couple thousand, thought it was the world's slowest ddos there for a minute lol

Took a few mins. and a few tries to get past the verification page just now. Not a dig, I get why you've added it, just an FYI.
That's good to know because it's exactly the thing I'm trying to avoid. I hate getting stuck in an endless loop of captchas so if people are getting stuck on them, I'll need to make adjustments.
Are you using any privacy related stuff? Non-Chrome browser, vpn, adblock etc? I don't want you to disable them, I'm just curious about what configs are having a hard time.
I just had the quick question asking me if I'm human. I said yes and it fucking believed me  dumbass AI.
I assume those visitors are AI bots crawling sites harvesting data, a few other forums have mentioned that
Yeah, this forum runs on "Simple Machines Forum" and there's a discussion there with others facing the same issue. I'm noticing the same behaviour with the majority of traffic coming from Brazil, but it's still fairly distributed.
https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=592345.0
I've had to totally block South America, Africa, and Asia until the traffic dies down. In the last 12 hours the site has received 250k requests from these continents, compared to 9k from Ireland.
the great replAIcement

No, just Chrome on Android phone, no add-ons or privacy software.
This is the first time I've been able to get onto the forum since that post earlier. Between now and then, I've gotten stuck in an endless verification loop. No captchas, just the verification page refreshing itself every 15 seconds or so, so there was no time for it to complete its cycle.
I cleared my cache multiple times inbetween attempts, no success 'til now.
Edit: Came out of it after that, came back to the site a few mins. leter and had the same problem. On a whim I switched to data and got straight back in, so might the delay be network related? I'm on Sky fibre here, and it's just this site, so might it be a setting somewhere between the two?
Edit 2: Yep, switching to data bypasses the Cloudflare page and brings me straight to the forum, but when I switch back to wifi (even in the same session) I'm hung up with that.
Thanks for the info. I don't expect anybody to put up with that. We're back to regular numbers now so I've loosened things up. Europe, North America, and Australia should no longer be getting captchas. If anybody knows of members outside of those 3 continents I can make further adjustments to make sure they're not blocked.
Back to normal now, cheers. Fair play to you for putting the work in, pain in the arse I'm sure.
Getting a cert error using Firefox on PC. Working ok on Firefox on the phone.IMG_9327.jpeg
Looking into this.
I think this has been caused by the switchover of the SSL Certificate from Let's Encrypt to Cloudflare. I was experiencing the same on Firefox Android but not Firefox PC. I was playing around with a few settings in Cloudflare at the same time so I'm not sure if I fixed it for everyone or just for myself.
Can you try again and see if it's working?
If not, can you try a private browsing window? The last resort would be clearing your browser (the "site settings" option specifically") to flush out the old certificate settings, but I know that can be annoying
Yeah, had to clear everything for the site. Working ok now. Thanks.
Thanks for the work on this, I had a few stalls earlier but forgot to screencap the error message - working absolutely painlessly now. Chrome, android, data and wifi.
Happy to help! Glad to hear it's all working!
The numbers appear to be creeping up again, or is this normal?
20250730_223244.jpg
No not normal at all!
I'm not too worried for now because the site performance is ok but I might need to ramp up the anti-bot measures again if they're getting too heavy. Blocking Brazil has helped a lot, but they're so heavily distributed it's hard to do much more which wont also impact regular users. The site is even getting requests from Starlink.
Any chance of updating the list of promoters?
Ah shit I've just noticed that thread is outdated and referencing a page which no longer exists. I'll pull the details from the old page but I might need assistance in ensuring the info is correct and adding/removing any promoters as needed.
Thread has been updated here: https://forum.metalwarfare.com/index.php?topic=194
Site has never let me view spoilers for some reason but now I have to see what is posted in the Rún gig thread  anything I can do to enable them?
You should be able to just click the spoiler and it'll expand. What's happening when you click it? What browser/device are you using?

Just looks like this:

Chrome on Android phone.
Nothing happens when I tap on it, not an interactive element / just highlights text when I hold tap it too. Stays the same when opened in desktop mode.
Maybe it's something your missus installed on your phone to stem your naked oul lad habit?

Whoops the permissions for Shit Pit members was accidentally set to disallow spoiler viewing. It would have impacted everyone and has most likely been like that the entire time. Apologies for that! It's been fixed so please try again now.

Cheers! Now back to the auld lads
FYI- I got this a few mins. ago, obviously it's back now:

Generalized Cloudflare outage, all sorts of sites hit, including Xitter, etc.
Yes, one of the downsides of running behind Cloudflare to defend against the bots
Ah right. Coming and going here since.
It's improving but there's still issues
