Title: Handy Tips & Money Savers
Post by: Kurt Cocaine on January 18, 2021, 05:27:28 PM
Something to help out in these times of forced austerity but also to help the environment too.

I should have mentioned this a few months ago but......

If you keep your heating on as low as you can bear during these cold winter months. By keeping it on as low as you can and leave it on 24/7 you'll save money and oil/gas too, thus helping the environment.
A colleague of mine used to do BER energy ratings on properties before moving to our company.
He said the hardest thing on fuel energy is trying to heat cold water to hot. Keeping warm water warm is very easy and cost efficient.
When you have your heating set to come on, let's say an hour before you get home from work, it's blasting full power to get all that cold water warn to circulate around the system. Especially expensive if you have a house with up to 8 or more radiators to heat.
We've been doing this since October and have been using 3 x 25 litre drums of Kerosene each month.
It's about €10 a drum here on the border, so by March we'll have heated our two bedroom house (with 5 radiators) for about €180... Not bad at all.

Any tips or tricks you guys have, please feel free to share and I'll add more myself.

You obviously don't work with the filthy pigs I do.
Home every time, unless absolutely necessary.

Someone put a thread up here before with a deal from Tidal music (Spotify variant).
I've been using it since that time (about 13 months) for the princely sum of about €13.....
I signed up for 6 months at a cost of €5. Then I got my missus to sign up for the same and I just signed in under her name. Then just before Christmas they offered me 4 months for €3...
Leaves me with spare money to purchase from the artists that I happen to come across on there.
I'm sure you can get similar deals on some of the other music platforms if you look for their deals.

Is that an actual thing? I've heard about it but I asked a plumber and he said he didn't know if it made any difference so I thought it was a bit of an urban myth.

Shit in work.

Not an option for me, being the only bloke in the place!

My contribution to this is I suggest to drink the cheapest lager possible and be as jakey as you like without breaking the bank. Another one for anyone who smokes just buy the rollies instead of the fags. 200 quid a month back in the pocket and that's even without getting the cheap 50 gram. With suggestions like that, I foresee a future of lurking in this thread for me.

Absolutely agree with the beer thing but get a couple of decent beers to start off with and when your taste buds start flagging, hit the cheapo stuff.

Another great booze tip is: say you're having a Jameson, Ginger Ale & Lime....
I get a couple of glasses and put about 50ml ginger ale in each glass and freeze for a couple of hours.
Take your glass out of the freezer, put in your shot of whiskey and top up with more ginger ale, add your lime and hey presto, you have an ice cold drink with no watery ice diluting it.
And stays ice cold till the final drop coz of the nice round mixer ice at the bottom of the glass.
Works with any mixer you choose, cola, 7Up, apple juice, etc....

Seconding the drink tip, get a couple of nice ones and then a rake of cheap cans for after that.  Or, if you're like me and like cheap lager anyway, it's a win win.

Budget.  An obvious one maybe but a surprising amount of people don't do it.  It is not even remotely hard to sit down and see your outgoings vs. income for the past three months, and that will easily let you plan three months into the future.  Expand it.  Spreadsheet that fucker and build it to do some projections for you.  Even if you're living week to week and on the bare minimum, it will help you to plan it right out and you are more likely to stick to it if you can directly see the benefits.  I am gone so bad for this that for the past five years I have built a yearly budget in excel and I keep it on my phone, it runs weekly and I put absolutely everything into the fucker.  Before my phone was capable of doing that properly, I used to draw one out and keep it in my wallet, and note everything on it.  The visibility will help you consider where you are wasting money, or what's hitting the hardest on you and needs to be looked at.  Regularly vetting it saves the money.

Simpler ones:  Always cook and freeze extra portions with your dinners.

If you're stuck some week, remember you can make about 6-8 portions of soup for about €4 worth of veg and it will hold for 3-4 days in the fridge.  I used to just buy whatever veg was on special in tesco the day I went shopping and knock together a soup out of it to do two of us for a few days, if you go for the extra reduced almost gone off stuff you can go cheaper again.

Buy all of the exact same colour and type of socks so you don't have to throw the pair out when one tears.  This also helps with not having to match them when doing a wash.  Nobody looks at your fuckin socks anyway

Cheap lager all the way but then limiting consumption of said lager is hard.😳

A bag of potatoes for homemade chips. Fry them up with some olive oil. Goes with almost anything.

Noodles too. Noodles can be picked up cheap and combined with other things (tuna for example).

Giving up smoking helps (if you smoke),  start vaping and you won't need to buy much liquid to keep going. No more '20 a day' pack everyday.

(..but I am not the best example of a financially responsible person, I like collecting vinyl, comics, old magazines..money goes somehow 😓)

It's always worth doing a balancing statement with the revenue every year. Usually end up getting a few quid in back taxes, hit the jackpot this time and getting a two grand refund in the next few days

I'm obliged to that every year in Spain, I hired a financial advisor the last three years and I've gotten roughly 800 back each summer which is a good return on the 50 he charges me for the consultation.

It's also crucial to not to lose the run of yourself when you do come into some extra cash or get a salary increase. My Mrs is a pharmaceutical executive earning daft money and her spending habits are laughable these days. The overpriced boutiques of Paris are patronised handsomely via Madrid on a weekly basis!

Depending how much you want to save, take whatever from this list (I don't do everything here) ->

Food (Shop in Lidl/Aldi - cut down on junk and goodies, try doing a shop without picking up crisps, chocolate, sweets, cakes, soft drinks, etc you will be amazed) Forget about bottled water and buy a filter jug. Learn to cook. That Sunday Roast or boiled ham can be your sambos for the next few days in work. Ready meals are generally shite for you and expensive. Take packed lunch to work, something like soup. Soup is easy to make, cheap, feeds loads and uses up lots of scraps.

Drive slower, learn to service your own cars, if its out of waranty, this can save you loads.Use fully synthetic oil, this saves you 4-5 mpg. Don't change it more frequently than recommended, many people change oil every 6 months, modern oils can last 12 months/30000 miles.
Have the tyres inflated properly, and ask for more efficient tyres on a change. Remove excess weight or anything you don't really need/use frequently out of the boot.

Use this site to find the cheapest fuel wherever you are based ->
https://www.pumps.ie/

Post-pandemic if possible, definitely request to work from home for at least 2-4 days a week. Massive savings on commuting.

On the heating aspect - look carefully at the ventilation points around your house, you might find the bricks not fully sealed to the inside volume, could be loosing tons of heat.

Insulate the attic, you should have at least 250mm of insulation -100mm running between the joists and 150mm running on top of this across the joists. Heat loss through uninsulated or badly insulated attics accounts for around 30% of the total heat losses from a house. Even if you are renting you should insist your landlord carries out this work for you, it doesn't cost much at all. You can do it yourself but make sure that you insulate the storage tank and the pipes in the attic and maintain the ventilation. Plenty of info online for diy-ers.

Put on your favourite 5 minute song on the phone, leave it near you and hop into the shower. Try get done when the song is finished.

Don't get stung on bank charges, get rid of the credit card. Get a revolut card or alternative.

Get smart plugs around the house and schedule them to go off at night time or do it from your phone with the smart app. Buy low energy light bulbs. Defrost food in the fridge during the day and not in the microwave.

Check prices across amazon sites and get the cheapest ->
https://www.hagglezon.com/

Always google the online store to look for discount codes, you'd be surprised how many 5-20% codes you can find in a google search.

You shouldn't be paying 30-50 euro a month for your bill phone...I'm still PAYG and spend about 20 euro every 4-6 weeks.

Don't be paying for Disney+/Netflix/Amazon and spending nearly 50 a month on all these services, learn how to setup Plex as a server on a PC or something like a NVIDIA Shield/download torrents/setup your own personal Netflix.

I keep a spreadsheet on google docs, record every item/purchase, only started the past year and great to look back and see the difference in insurance and other annual items you have saved on. When you get a visual on the pointless luxuries and bad habits, and how they accumulate over a year - it's a lot and can change directions with a bit of thought. I'm sure Scrooge would be ashamed of some of those ideas above! But if your budgeting you need to get the OH/family on board otherwise there's no point in you being penny wise while the OH is on a spending spree.

I made a good couple of quid from match betting a few years ago. You'll not be a millionaire but you will feel a bit like Biff Tanem with the sports almanac.

And I like getting free samples from sites like freesamples.co.uk
Got a link to Tena lady and got two free pairs of lady's incontenace pads. For a laugh I put my bosses name and company addres in, and sure enough a week later he got himself a pack. How we laughed. Doesn't know it was me.

Car insurance, do call them. It's a pain but...
Last year the renewal came in on line, but I called and got a policy, same broker, but got it as new rather than a renewal.  Way cheaper, last week renewal time again, called again, and the guy on the phone gave me a discount on the day.

Absolutely this, it takes only a short while to do.  I have to do my last two years this year - had put it off because of an old issue where my wife was self employed but we claimed together - but will be going through it this week.  Also worth doing if you've lived abroad at any point in the last few years then moved home, I was in Canada for a long time but moved back home halfway through a year.  The next year when I filed the P21, we got almost 3k back, it was down to only having worked for six months here but being taxed for a full year.

Says I owe 3k+ for last year  :-X :-X :-X Stupid TWSS! So for anyone else who has checked this, divide the number you owe by 48. This is how much you'll pay back a month starting from 2022 (will take 4 years) when revenue go after this money.

Now that I know ye drink yellow pack gut-rot booze, smoke rollies, starve yerselves, use cheap hookers and refuse to have a shite in yer own homes it all makes sense.
what a fine bunch of financially responsible fellows ye are.

I do look at the recently purchased thread here every now and again and often muse to myself as to how in the crotch of Christ ye motherfuckers can afford to buy such an amount of CDs, vinyl, tapes, t-shirts etc. and not be financially destitute.
Now that I know ye drink yellow pack gut-rot booze, smoke rollies, starve yerselves, use cheap hookers and refuse to have a shite in yer own homes it all makes sense.
what a fine bunch of financially responsible fellows ye are.

On a personal note I told the girlfriend to get the fuck out of my life there a year or so ago and its after saving me a fucking fortune on toilet paper alone. what the fuck do them bitches be doing with all the toilet paper?

 I think both questions are interrelated here.  I think these lads with the big vinyl collection are the famed 'one wipe merchants'. The type of lads that drink a tea or coffee on the jacks, subsist on cans of baked beans and then back to scouring ebay for the latest deal.

The toilet paper thing is a mysterious one alright.

I was adding up all the subscription services I have there after Carnage's post, between the phone, spotify, YouTube premium and about 60 quid a month on other assorted bullshit, I could be wiping my arse on fine Chinese silken jacks roll if I reigned it in.

As a man who once had occasion to wipe his hole with a silk tie, following a most unfortunate wedding shite related incident, I can attest to the notoriously poor absorption qualities of fine silk.
I'd go with a high thread count brushed Egyptian cotton if I were you.

Ducky had a more elaborate name on the old forum. He hadn't contracted TDS at that point and was therefore a normal and sound poster. He just refused to take his red medication though...

I think we might have a winner with the tayto bag. Often used the receipts meself, they're not the best but use enough of them and they see you through.

The trick for particularly glossy / tough receipts is to double them and wet them a bit first so they don't cut the ring off you, not a lot mind or they'll just rip.  No hope in a tayto bag though.

That happened to friends of mine. Twice. About 15 years later, after letting the banks take the flats back, only now are they in a position to buy again.

Stamp duty here is 10%. 10! Lucky enough that the Mrs has a company car otherwise it'd be walking everywhere like an asshole.

My brother is buying a gaff and I wanted to give him a few quid, and the tax bastards here want a taste of any 'gift' of 3000 or more.

Save money on expensive facial scrubs.
A bit of shower gel on your nail brush when you're in the shower. Hey presto, clean pores and soft supple skin. Great for the pores on the side of your nose especially...

Annoying process but people with mortgages with their fixed rate about to lapse, should look at Avant Money, they setup last year in Ireland, lowest fixed rates available. Get your house re-valued, depending how many years you are into your mortgage it could bring down your LTV and get you on a much lower rate. We get f**ked on interest rates here compared to other EU states but could save thousands over the mortgage term by swapping around every 3-5 years. Did it back in June and it's saving 504 a year. That's 10k over 20 years so not to be sniffed at.

Personally wouldn't go for those 10 year fixed terms. I don't see low interest rates going away at the moment.

Sure but would need to be a sustained period of inflation, look at the 25Y or MAX there, we've seen these spikes in the past decade but interest rates continued to decline during those years since 08 crash ->

https://tradingeconomics.com/euro-area/inflation-cpi

Our banks are still nowhere near the EU average for mortgage rates.
