I thought there was already a Gjendød thread on the go here but it seems there has been some kind of inexplicable oversight. I take at least partial blame. I think these guys are among the best new black metal on the go. Their sound is traditional Norwegian but with their own strong identity delivered through fantastic bass lines in particular and some delightfully vicious vocals.
I see they have, just this month, completed recording on their third album and have recently quietly released two EPs, one of which is as split with Múspellzheimr. Ordered.
Such an insanely hard working band releasing quality material constantly in fairness to them. Managed to pick up the compilation vinyl of there first 3 ep/demo second hand in bunker vinyl... Great to have that collected on one piece instead of trying to chase limited tapes
I have the tapes and the CD collection. Haven't picked up the vinyl version. Totally agree about their work rate and high consistency.
I am selling Gjendød, Nedstigning, Havet Tar and En Ny Vår For Hat tapes.
PM if you are interested.
Listening to the Motstand 7". It sounds incredible. Gjendød at their mid-paced best with massive basslines, acoustic guitars and an overall epic, somewhat folky feel, topped off with nasty, nasty vocals. I've said it before and I'll say it again, they are one of the best BM bands on the go.
Krigsdøger on now. I haven't given this anywhere near the attention it deserves. I intend to rectify that.
Krigsdøger CD on the way at the moment, looking forward to giving the album a proper spin
I had it on today in the car.
Presently listening to the split with Múspellzheimr and the Gjendød side, at least, is savage. Another ponderous mid-paced beaut.
They have a new album coming out on Hellthrasher next month which is supposed to be more wild, fast and chaotic in style.
I must check this band out. From the description, it seems they are something i'd like.
I've the Nedstigning LP on now. Haven't listened to this in a while. Savage record and the artwork is still one of the best (most provocative?) modern BM album covers, in my opinion.

The one with the fatboy walking topless in the forest?
Ya that's not great now and I fail to see what you would find provocative about that.
Provocative for you, I see
:P
I had a bit of a listen to Nedstigning on You Tube last night, it's rather good.
The new album, Angrep, is up for pre-order now with two songs streaming (which I'll get to later). It has been a good couple of days for new BM for me between this, Mooncitadel and Circle of Dawn. 8)
https://hellthrasherproductions.bandcamp.com/album/angrep
This sounds good!
My word, Angrep is one Hell of an album. For such fast relentless music the lads have invested so much nuance and detail into the playing. This is probably the most guitar orientated album of theirs so far and the riffs are incredible. One listen and I'm hooked. The immediate standout so far is track six. That clever little ascending run of notes really took me by surprise, but I feel that this album will reveal more and more with each listen.
I've only recently discovered this band. It's excellent. The 2 albums I've heard are full of venom and cold fury. If An Post would get the lead out I'd have them in my hands by now but still waiting.
Yep, savage band, savage album.
Really like how the songs aren't too long, most being under the four minute mark.
Not a fan of a lot of the tossing about that goes on with a a lot of BM bands, one minute intros and one minute outros making six minute songs out of what should be a good four minutes of barbarity.
Start hard, play hard and finish hard. Its mostly why I'd be a bigger DM than BM fan. ya can't beat the old three minute DM assault.
This is great stuff though, class vocals too.
Krigsdøger vinyl just released on Hellthrasher!
https://hellthrasherproductions.bandcamp.com/album/i-utakt-med-verden?from=fanpub_fnb
New album up for pre-order. I haven't had a chance to listen to the two streaming songs yet but I always feel in safe hands with Gjendød. They are so consistent.
I listened to the album last night, or most of it anyway, and it sounds fucking great. More in line with the mid paced stuff of the post- debut album run of demos, but mixed with the lush acoustics of the recent 7" they released. I'll have to order a CD on pay day. Sounds like they have hit the mark once again.
I think they are easily the most consistent and creative black metal band in Norway these days.
This will be another must have.
I’d love if there was an Angrep shirt but alas no.
All I can find is the Krigsdoger merch

The Angrep cover is savage. I would love it on a tshirt as well.
I stuck in an order for the new album and couldn't resist finally grabbing the demo compilation LP too. The new one sounds like their best yet to me so I'm really looking forward to having the CD and getting my teeth into it.
They have a new demo coming out soon apparently so I'll keep an eye on DTB's website.
I ordered on Wednesday night and it's in its way.
I only have the full length releases, no demos yet.
https://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Gjend%C3%B8d/Skygger_fra_d%C3%B8dsriket/728720
This compilation is savage. It's the run of demos they released after the first album and has been my favourite of their material up to now, but it's possible the new album will top it or at least equal it.
Thanks for that.
I'll have to get it. Did you listen to the new Hulder or does she not interest you?
I liked the demo but never got around to buying the album. I must check it out.
New mini album I'm the way.
The first full length is excellent. Good song writing not just image and fanfare.
There is an Angrep shirt on hellthrasher for preorder.
It's a pity bit wasn't ready in time for the new album to save shipping costs.
Pity it looks like shite too
They are quite poor looking. It would be better with the 2 fellas having their frolic in the woods.
They haven't had much luck on the tshirt design front. I bought the first one they put out a few years ago which was that bloody head or eyebrow off one of the demos. The Krigsdøger artwork looked unexciting to me so I didn't bother with the tshirt and this one is shit too.
I was getting the Nedstigning LP off the shelf and, wait, what's this!- how can the Skygger Fra Dodsriket LP be sitting on the shelf when I currently have it playing on the stereo... I had completely forgotten picking that up on record before and bloody went and bought it again. Feck! So now I have it on CD and LP twice as well as having all of the separate demo tapes that make up the compilation. Overkill 2 de MAX!
They never did a whole lot for me but really liking this new one so will have to do a bit of back peddling.
If you like the new one check out Skygger Fra Dødsriket. It's a compilation of four mid period demos (only two of you get the vinyl, though) and it's fucking super. The bass playing is so good.
I’m loving this new one but it’s going to take something massive to top Nedstigning.
I must get that demo collection next.
Do they play live or is it all forest frolics?
I imagine them running around the forest like the killer in Black Spot.
Just finishing up Angrep. Saw it get a bit of a cold shoulder on RoD but it's a fuckin beast of a thing. I know we don't need these comparisons etc but on first listen it's a far better album than the last Funeral Mist when it comes to the blasting style of BM.
Angrep is a beast. Some of the fucking shite that comes out of the lads on that site really make my head sore. It's so aggressive but jam- packed with powerful riffs.
I couldn't find fault in it. Ya, tis a shallow gene pool over there at times. Great for finding all sorts of tunes though.
New one on in the car this morning. It's really epic. Might just be their best one to date. You should check out the two 7"s that preceded it. They first introduced the acoustic elements on those songs and they add so much.
Bit of accordian snuck in at the end of track 2 as well and they pull it off.
I had this on in the way to work and you know when an album clicks perfectly with the weather and sets a nice tone for the day... cold and frosty outside while this album was transporting me to snowy Norway inside the car. Fans of early Ulver, Strid, VBE and the folk parts of Loits, Sigrblot and Drudkh should really give this album a spin. It's majestic.
Saw Andy mentioning these lads in the Now Playing thread as they had just put up a cover on YouTube* and thought I'd bump this.
I had tried giving them a go a good few years ago but they did nothing for me then. Not sure what persuaded me to chance them again after that, but I'm glad I did. Definitely one of my favourite current BM bands.
Skygger fra dødsriket is probably the best place to start for anyone unfamiliar with them. Catchy and atmospheric right from the beginning. Surprisingly prominent (for a black metal band) and very well written basslines throughout as well.
They get bonus points for some very odd promo photos too:
*Suprised they covered a Manes track given their disdain towards the Trondheim scene that they hinted at in an interview I read a while back.
Great band and that pic is savage
I assume their disdain is for the modern Trondheim scene centred around Terratur Possessions. Manes were active well before that. Their most recent album, I utakt med verden, is one of their strongest.
I'd have to agree that the last album is the best so far with the debut being a close second.
Gotta say I really enjoy Krigsdoger and Angrep as well. Was very late to the game but like everything I've heard.

Aye, good point..
And yeah, I utakt is great stuff. Had it on last week a bit. Digging the clean vocals at the end of the last track too.

It's deadly!
"The wind blew out the candles, but I didn't care because I was going underwater anyway. My plan was to pay tribute to the 'Live in Leipzig' and 'Transilvanian Hunger' covers, but underwater. Not a good idea or place THAT day. The water was muddy, and the river was high. My woman was going to shoot the photo with an underwater camera, but as soon as I went under I was pulled towards the waterfall with my heavy leather jacket and army boots on. I was able to look desperate and call for help. She came towards me rushing, but the river took her too. After struggling for some time, I could dive to the bottom of the river and kicked the stones at the ground, and somehow that helped. We didn't try again because we were exhausted, and the candles were gone."
Nutter.

The middle 2 albums are really good with Krigsdoger being more full on and loose around the edges.
I love that lighter touch they took with the last album, it's perfect for a nighttime listen.
Angrep is a little ripper.
New demo up for pre-order at MOD. I grabbed it along with the Motstånd t-shirt which I hadn't known about before. Simple and cool design.
What's MOD? I usually get their stuff from Heelthrasher.
Merchant of Death, the webstore of Darker Than Black.
Thank you.

Good man! Nabbed one!
Osmose productions have a few new shirt designs for preorder.
Click click.
I like that Angrep one.
Backprint is poxy. I'd go with the Krigsdogers one. Will definitely be picking up the lps.
Part of me wants to get the Nedstigning one but I'd never wear it out and about.
No sign of a shirt with the latest album on it. I will have to go with the Krisdoger one.
 I thought the same thing.
class band. Krigsdøger is just a perfect aesthetic and sound. also love that comp Skygger fra dødsriket.
yeah that cover is bollocks on Nedstigning.
Cover is deadly. I just wouldn't wear it on a t-shirt.
New album "Livskramper" due out at the end of June.
Pre order available on Osmose now:

Very much looking forward to this!
sweet. love the Kittelsen cover. much better than Nedstigning ;)
Looking forward to it. I utakt med verden was really good. Perhaps even their best yet.
Last album was definitely the best one so far. It says there is a new drummer in the band so I wonder how this will turn out.
At last the shirt is available for a preorder for the last album as well.
The new drummer appeared on the recent demo. No drastic change to the sound you my ears.
https://youtu.be/gYiIMlpmT0s?si=egWVwOiWzM94NVf_
Full album up now. Lord almighty, it sounds good.
That first track is killer.
There are some unhinged guitars breaks in there. It's just bananas.
Yep. There's a bit of prog in the mix, I think.
Another savage release. :abbath:
Surprised they're not more popular. There's only the one review on Metal Archives and that's for the demo. Maybe being on Osmose will change that.
What the fuck is going on with the cover though? It looks like a woman searching for nits in Chewbacca's head.
It's a Kittelsen I think, but yeah, weird. But sure, that's Gjendød- I love their attitude. Looking forward to reading some new interviews with them because they are always highly entertaining.
I love the cover. Their description of the last album was brilliant. They said Angrep was going to war did the follow up was the mourning/ counting the dead phase. Nail on the head.
I've shared links with friend that aren't really into that style and they all have the same opinion. They don't like BM but keep going back to these releases as they are drawn in over and over again.
Quote from: Count Magnus on June 28, 2024, 09:38:42 AMWhat the fuck is going on with the cover though? It looks like a woman searching for nits in Chewbacca's head.
Yep, pretty much. The Princess picking Lice from the Troll -Theodor Kittelsen (1900).
This is a beaut so far as im just playing through now. first track was wild. they're talented buachalli.
Nice one. This is great so far. They're a band in constant motion and always delivering.
Sounds class, as always.
The art is great - something different for sure, but better than your typical bollox. Reminds me of Blood in our Wells.
Didn't realise it's a Kittelsen piece. I was looking at the artwork on Spotify and my eyesight isn't great ;D
Anyways the music is class. They're one of the few modern black metal bands worth listening to. I'll definitely be picking this up.
Man this new album is good. It's a total riff-fest. The new drummer blends in seamlessly as well. I was slightly worried they'd bring in a technician who would overwhelm the songs with fancy drumming, but really, his playing is understated and doesn't alter the vibe in any way. Magical album.

Found out yesterday that the drummer is Misotheist's vocalist's dad!
And yeah, class album. Still getting plenty of play here.
I haven't bothered with Misotheist. Any use?
I like them quite a bit anyway. Saw them live twice and they were bloody brilliant.
Give 'em a go shur. What's the absolute worst that could happen?
The absolute worst that could happen as I see it, since you asked, is that they are so fucking terrible that I give up all interest in continuing this existence after one quick listen and go out, find the most poisonous snake in the bush, pick it up and put it's fangs straight up to my warm, irresistible jugular. The real question now is, will you be able to live with yourself??
I'd probably be wracked with guilt for quite a while, but I'd eventually get over it, with the pangs only needling me on anniversaries.
Eventually I'd stop blaming myself and remember the good times.
Would probably still listen to Misotheist.
Well if you think you'll be ok after my untimely demise, not to mention the tremendous pain and loss my absence will cause to the metal scene (oh, and my family. I almost forgot about them) then you know what, I'll give them a go. I better grab the rosary beads just in case.
I just had a listen to the first half of For the Glory of Your Redeemer by Misotheist. Not bad at all but not really what I'm after at the moment.
What time are ya planning the suicide?
I had I utakt med verden on in the car the last three days. This is one of the best things released in the past few years.
It's just amazing.
Mr Mclove if you decide to wander into the void will your shirts be on eBay?
Not shirts to celebrate your demise, just the shirts from your collection.
Ah, we'll get shirt to celebrate his demise as well. What better way to honour a man than to cash in?
It will have to have a killer quote on the back and mention his love for k-pop.
I am now posting from beyond the grave. It's not too bad actually. Great Wi-Fi. All my t-shirts are in the pyramid where they belong, along with my records and human slaves.
Working my way slowly through the discography here but I reckon Angrep is my favourite of the lot.
Svekkelse - Due in September!

Such productive lads. Loving those band photos on the back of it ;D
Haha yes, that band pic is funny. Mandatory blind purchase. I like how the artwork calls back to the debut.
I'd have to put them as my favourite BM band. Every album is different yet they all flow together.
It's between the debut and the fourth when it comes to my favourite.
CD ordered. I've held off listening to the album but now I've ordered it I'll give it a spin tonight 8)
The new CD arrived today and my initial feeling is... it's good. Not jumping out as being especially excellent by their standards. One or two songs stand out as being quite strong but most of it feels a little bit ordinary, but perhaps it's a grower.
I read a review saying it's like a mix of all their albums but lacks some of the magic. Apparently it's ferocious though.
There are enough cool bits there to bring me back to it and it could be that there is more to discover with further listens. Let's... find... out....
Getting to the new one tonight. Class :abbath:
