Went to see him for the 4th time on Sunday - worst of the 4 and still brilliant... How does he fare on the pallette of the other metal listening folk here??

Live at Vicar Street is one I still listen to fairly regularly. And Planxty's black album even more regularly.

Small doses. I haven't paid any attention to him in about 30 years since he sobered up and beģan taking himself ultra-seriously. Early albums and the first few Planxty were mighty though.

I probably know less than 5 Christy songs but I do enjoy them. Not sure if I've ever heard a note of Planxty.

Any recommendations for either?

And if you dig that, just keep going forward album by album.

Planxty: s/t, The Well Below The Valley, Cold Blow And The Rainy Night, Live 2004

Solo: Prosperous, Ride On, Ordinary Man, Voyage

He's got a shitload of solo albums and I haven't heard a lot of them, but those ones are pretty good either way.

but Ride On is absolutely sublime, I'll admit. Love it!

He's gone a bit up his own hole over the years

Happens most of them, in all honesty...

Don't really pay attention to him but has been great the few times I saw him. The solo stuff was a constant growing up and the Planxty stuff is still a constant.

I've seen him twice, listen to his older stuff a fair bit. Studio albums up to 'Smoke & Strong Whiskey' are what'd I'd generally go for.  Later live albums after that are still great.  Planxty, Moving Hearts I have most of those on LP & CD and still play them (when the wife is out.... she hates him 😄)

There is a CD/DVD Digipak called 'Planxty, Between the Jigs and the reels a retrospective'  which is worth it for the 70s film footage alone.  Its probably on YouTube?

I'd also recommend Leagues O'Toole's book (The Humours Of Planxty), aside from being an in depth history of the band it's a good oul' yarn too.
