As a sequel to the favourite drive pedal thread.

I use a Boss DD-500. It can do absolutely anything...except I'm just not sure I love the sound of it. Very tempted to just say fuck it and get some kind of Strymon and have the instant great tone, but I use the DD-500 for so much functionality (presets, tap, bpm, as a harmonizer, phaser, chorus, tremolo, 2 delays at once etc) plus I love the functionality of the pattern delay.

Can't decide whether to just keep tweaking and stick with it, or go for a delay whose sound I really love and make up the functionality elsewhere...

I have a Boss DM-101, which is an awesome analog delay. Strymons sound great, but they are very clean. Pristine. Not everyone is into that. So I'd see if you can try one first.

I am fond of the DD7 and Canyon, both versatile work horses.  DD7 is a little plain but it is very functional, beyond being a decent delay it has other functions (splitter, stereo setups) that make it a regular fixture for me.

Canyon has heaps of sounds and is a decent price so it's good to have the variety on hand.  In reality you will end up finding one good sound you personally like and stick with it though because of the lack of presets and fiddly secondary controls.  Tape delay on it sounds great though I use it all the time.

Meris Polymoon is absolutely lush too, I've played a friend's one a few times.  Plenty of options, preset switch works with it, midi functionality, lovely sounds, decent price for what you get.  Worth looking up a demo of.

Going to toot my own horn here and post the Cruel Bloom demo.  Dual delay with plenty of extra features like parallel/series/feedback modes, repeats limiting, chorus-y warble on either delay, trails/tails switch (whatever you call them yourself), and a "Bloom" momentary switch that lets you add quick bursts of delay or holds as you like.

They look nicer now, that's the first one I ever built I think. https://www.quilleffects.com/product/cruel-bloom

I have none at the minute and am redoing them a bit later in the year for the next run but I still like the sound off them so I'm not changing that anyway.

I got the last Cruel Bloom and it's a class delay in that darker tape style.

My all time favourite is the Malekko Ekko 616 with the Carbon Copy a close second. The pink Mooer Ana Echo is also very good. Those three are all analogue and the first two have modulation.

Can't go wrong with a DD-3 for pristine repeats. Eventide Timefactor or Line 6 DL4 for lots and lots of options including looping.

If I were you I'd keep that Boss unit and pick up a nice analogue delay like the Malekko or MXR to go with it.

Bought a DD-20 years ago second hand and I love it, tons and tons of sounds hidden in there.

Currently on my board though (for bass, range of styles from sludge to post-punk and psych/jazz-inflected) is just a cheap and cheerful TC Electronic Echobrain. Analogue, only up to 300ms delay, but it's totally built to feedback and oscillate, which works for my needs. The knobs on it are big enough that I can control them (delicately!) with my foot.

Must get my hands on a Cruel Bloom at some point, I've heard what it can do.

My favourite delay is probably the Strymon El capistan. It has a really nice character you can dial in with the tape warble and has some very handy features. There's a dial-able boost and also a reverb so I can set it up as a one hit switch for leads. Also has tap tempo which is handy. They've kind of gotten outrageously expensive now though.

I have an Ibanez DE7 which is a nice delay that can get some crazy oscillation going. It's part of the tone lock series though which I've had issues with the switches so it only works when it wants to. Can't put it on a board for live use!

I also have a Cruel bloom, very cool pedal with some great features, well thought out. I've got mine in a little rig in my house and can coax some great sounds from it. My brother has kind of taken to using it a lot even though he has a host of other nice delays.

Ended up going Eventide H90. So took care of the functionality and delay all in one pedal! Now to sell the DD-500 and the other pedals it replaces to claw some of the money back  :-[
