A lad in work gave me his copy of Mr Mercedes, just about through it and it's grand enough

Despite seeing all the film adaptations of King's stuff I'd never got around to any of his books for some reason. Going to go check out some of the classic stuff after this one

His 70s and 80s stuff is his best stuff imo. Pet Semetary is particularly bleak and brutal.

Misery, Long walk, Shining are excellent.  Thought the Stand was a bit too meandering,  JFK book was good as was Salems Lot. Haven't read It actually mist remedy that

The Dead Zone and Cujo are also great.

Quote from: Carnage on August 13, 2026, 12:02:22 PMI'm a couple of chapters into Richard Coles' first autobiography. Not great so far but sure it's early days.

Finally finished this earlier, it wasn't great TBH. He generally comes across as amiable enough (also a right tosser at times) but it was just a bit flat.

I picked up The Outsider and Mr. Mercedes, so will probably hit into one of them soon enough.

Edit: I just nabbed one for the Kindle I'd been after for a while - The Hunger by Alma Katsu, a reimagining of the Donner Party expedition with possible supernatural elements. It's meant to be good and Scott Free have recently optioned it, so for 99p sure I'd be mad not to.

Flying through The Reader by Bernard Schlink. Good stuff.

Is that the basis for the Kate Winslet film? I enjoyed that, must give the book a look.

Yep, that's the one. Really worth a read.

I started into One Hundred Years of Solitude but quickly realised I simply cannot be fucked. I'm immediately irritated and bored by it. Maybe if I'd read it as a late teenager or early twenties person it would have resonated with me, but this type of nonsense absurdity just fucking bores me to death these days. Instead, I'm moving on to That Eye, The Sky by Tim Winton.

Read the Death of Ivan Ilych by Tolstoy. Started Tree of Smoke by Denis Johnson.

Read quite a few of the Bonds in my 20s and this was one of the ones I hadn't gotten around to. It's a collection of four short stories, which includes Octopussy and The Living Daylights. Octopussy is 100% different from the film (I guess they just liked the title), and The Living Daylights is basically the sniper scene from the film. Pretty enjoyable overall, and a pretty fast read as the stories are only about 40 pages each.

Just started on On Her Majesty's Secret Service next. Getting ready for the Bond film season that usually appears around November.
It's funny, I'm a bond nut, yet I've only read Casino Royale and an Ian Fleming biography. I really should just buy them all.and get through them. Eagerly awaiting the next Bond announcement.

Just nabbed the complete Tales Of Earthsea for the Kindle there, for a quid. That'll do nicely.
