Better than the last John Wick movie, I thought. Plus...yer wan.

Just back from the cinema after watching Mortal Kombat II. Checked my brain at the door and really enjoyed it.

Some amazing fight scenes, and if you enjoyed the games there's great fan service.

As an aside, I haven't been at the cinema much over the years and subsequently all my film watching has been at home on an OLED screen. It really struck me this evening how low contrast and washed out the cinema was in comparison.

Crime 101

Weak. Ruffalo tries but can't save it.

Top Gun: Maverick is re-released in the cinema this week. Saw it last night. Still class.

Gonna do a Thorn style roundup of stuff I've seen recently

Undertone  6.10
A horror film about a podcast that probably would have worked better as a podcast but still has a relatively successful stab at creating a spooky atmosphere. Worth a go, but didn't quite like it as much as I'd have liked to. Go listen to the "Petrified" podcast afterwards and imagine how they'd have made this idea into a fantastic radio drama

Rose of Nevada 9.10
Another Mark Jenkins film about weird shit happening in a tiny Cornwall fishing village that I didn't fully understand but fucking loved, just like everything else he's made. I love that he had a bigger budget on this, spent it on a couple of "name" actors, and still filmed it on the same bockity old camera he's used for everything else.

Buffet infinity 7.10
Bonkers "Adult Swim" style madness that's not going to be for everyone but if you enjoy that kind of dark humour you'll love it - basically a story told through a bunch of 80s US Cable TV adverts involving duelling restaurants and cult leader, and that's as much of a plot as I can give you. Weird, funny, annoying and impressive all at the same time

Faces of Death 3.10
"THE INTERNET IS DEHUMANISING US AND MAKING US ALL MAD FOR ATTENTION" say pair of mid 30s film makers who think this is an entirely new concept and love the attention they've gotten for this tepid by the numbers nowadays slasher film in the press. That would have been an interesting spin on this remake if it were 2002 and Rotten.com and Ogrish were still a thing but at this stage it's old hat. The usual spooky mask/80s synth shite I've seen 1000 times at this stage with a cameo by that bloody Charlie XCX woman, who they didn't even have the decency to kill in it. Can't see how this would appeal to actual adults. Watch "Red Rooms" or "Ingrid goes West" far a far better/creepier/more intelligent take on this idea without the slasher element.

Obex 8.10
Yer man who basically makes films that are live action low budget "Adventure time" for adults makes another live action low budget "Adventure Time" for adults about a lad who has to enter a Dungeons and Dragons style video game to save his dog. Loved it

Pizza Movie 7.10
Didn't expect to like this as much as I did, time twisting multiversy stoner comedy not traditionally being my thing, but this was gas. Highly entertaining mindless Saturday night film

Quote from: open face surgery on May 04, 2026, 03:37:05 PMWent to Hokum last night. Thought they tried to cram too much into it but it was grand. Missus really enjoyed it.

Dying to see this but haven't had a chance. A large amount of the props used in the film are actually stored right next to my better half's studio right now.

Went to see Hokum and thought it was good but like someone mentioned already they tried to cram way too much into it.

Rewatched the old Masters Of The Universe and the Stallone Judge Dredd movie.

Masters has some great make up and set pieces that still hold up today. I love that lizard creature with the big hair.

Judge Dredd holds up way better than I expected and I actually think it's a much better film than the more recent one. Feels way more like something from the pages of 2000AD. It looks amazing too. Mean Machine and the ABC warrior look so good.

I have a soft spot for the Stallone Dredd as well. It does feel very comic book-y, combined with the typical action movie cheese of a Stallone or Schwartzenegger type action movie of that time.

I remember it being hugely panned at the time. I think the critics hated it, and the 2000AD fans rejected it because he had his helmet off the whole time.

Ya I still remember seeing it in the cinema for my birthday when it came out and was so disappointed he took the helmet off as I was really into the comics but once you get passed that it's a good film.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed it this time around. Makes me wonder about other fipms I wrote off as crap but might actually be good.
Gonna give Spawn a rewatch as I remember thinking that was so bad when it came out bar a few good scenes with the violator.

Ah lads, nostalgia is a powerful thing...the Stallone Dredd is appalling stuff and rightly panned on its release. Ye might be right about the aesthetic side of things, but the Karl Urban version is far superior, even if it shamelessly rips off The Raid. Yeah, and Spawn was an absolute travesty as well. Hands up who bought the soundtrack? I'm fairly sure i have a copy floating about the attic in Cork.

I just finished Spawn and apart from that one scene in the alleys with the violator it's absolutely awful. A wasted effort.

I disagree with you on the Judge Dredd one though. Don't think nostalgia is playing any part in that as I didn't like it when it came out. Karl Urban is a woeful actor imo and I thought he was shite as Dredd. Compared to the Stallone one it just doesn't feel like 2000AD.

I did have the Spawn soundtrack and thought it was cool at the time even though it's full of muck apart from a couple of songs. I dunno of it's just me but soundtracks seemed way better back then.Like they put more effort into them or something. Even though the results were usually not great.

The Spawn film was fairly shit, the animated series was fucking brilliant though. Shame it was cancelled before being finished

might give Stallone's Dredd a revisit. the Karl Urban one is great imo. but yeah, Spawn is not a film I'd ever be revisiting willingly, with its wocious woolly-haired satan and all :-X

Oh ya I forgot about the Spawn animated series. First season of that was brilliant.
The Satan from the the movie is so ridiculous alright. I was watching it with a friend and we burst out laughing when he came on.
Spawns costume looks great though.

Urban one is nigh on perfect Dredd. He nailed it.
