I have the megadrive collection on the Xbox and it's the same. I agree it does somewhat take from the experience.

Does it have wired controllers?

I had the snes mini and flashed it with a mod to add any rom, even Sega ones!

My only complaint is the wired controllers - they're too short. We don't sit 10 inches away from tiny tvs anymore

I recently got a turtles game for the Xbox that has all the old games on and it has the same thing as well.

Controller is wired but the lead is long. I have the Megadrive mini 1 as well and the SNES and NES bought them all this time last year I have wireless controllers for all of them. The NES was by far the worst the leads are about 6" long.

Bought all 3 second hand. The Snes was the only one that came modded and now its the only one I can't add games via USB to I can only put them directly onto the console which is annoying.

I have one of those PS1 Minis and its grand for a couple of games (MGS, FFVII and Tekken in particular) but I always found it hampered by the d-pad wired controller and only having 23 games, a lot of them of no interest to me.  But for 50 quid at the time 3ish years back, it was great.  I haven't turned it on in ages and the last run of FFVII I did was on my phone the other month (android version is great if anyone is curious).

Anyway - recently found out that modding these PS1 minis is a piece of cake so I'm going to do that soon.  You can flash a different OS (Project Eris/Auto Bleem seem to be popular ones) onto it through the 2nd controller port, and it lets you load .iso's onto it.  Not only this but it lets you run Retroarch on it so you can emulate any other console equal or previous to the PSX.  Also lets you run wireless controllers through some little dongle you can pick up online, you can sync PS4 controllers to it then apparently.  Grand.

I remember reading that the PS mini can't handle some of the older games well which is why some titles people were expecting were not included so id just be wary of that when you are adding games to it. They have it setup sometimes in my local and I was playing GTA on it earlier this year which was good.

I also bought a handheld thing called the Oidn that can play all this stuff and N64, gamecube etc. earlier this year. I think I have used it maybe 5 times since I got it. It is pretty good and seemed to get excellent reviews from all the reviewers who would know all about this kind of thing. Same with all the mini consoles I have only played them a couple of times in the year I have had them. I buy this stuff with the best of intentions and never end up using it. I plan to give them some more time once I get my current to-do list out of the way. Plenty of time over xmas (Although I said the exact same thing last year)

I'm looking at ps1 mini on Amazon here and I'm wondering what's the advantage to that vs just sticking a few emulators on my laptop? I have joypads that'll plug into it already and spare ps4 ones as it is. Is there any real point in dropping the few bob other than the look of it, like would it be smoother or more stable or anything like that?

Also n64 can't be emulated because of the joypads which is a fuck because I'd love a game of Goldeneye but the mapping is impossible

The advantage for me is not having to use the laptop if you get the console you just plug it into the TV. I hate watching movies or doing anything related to that on my laptop.

The handheld I have works perfect with the N64 games. It was head wrecking setting it up as it is one of things were the creators assume people buying it have backgorund knowledge on this stuff which I didn't but luckily some people made youtube videos on how to get it setup. It also comes with a docking station so it can be plugged into the TV and you can plug in original N64, Games cube and all other controllers into the docking station.

I've an n64 emu on my laptop but no matter what way I set it up (and there was a graphic to explain) it didn't feel fun or intuitive. Maybe I'll give it another go one of these days. Is there a mini of that console at all I wonder

No I think a mini N64 was talked about but for one reason or another never got made.

Scored resident evil 3 bundle for a tenner on the PS store. It better not be shit now

Also picked up Red Dead Redemption 2 which I've never played but have heard good things about

Played this for over 2 hours last night and distinctly unimpressed. Is this going to be the carry on for the whole game, this story shit? If it is, I'm just going to shelve it

RDR2 is very heavily story driven. The intro part in the snow and the first proper camp at Horseshoe Overlook can be very slow going though. The game world is massive and deliberately slow in terms of how your character moves and the lack of proper fast travel.

Having said that it's one of my favourite games I've ever played. As the world and the story open up more it's so easy to just get lost in the locations. One thing that makes a travel a bit easier is to capture the White Arabian horse as early as you can. Its the fastest horse in the game and helps travel to places quicker.

Breath of the Wild is amazing. Story mode a bit short, I have a ton of side quests to do but it seems a bit pointless now, other than to further explore a beautiful landscape. I've heard the DLC is great.
Best Zelda game ever?

Haven't gone back to it yet but your description is making me less likely to give up just yet
