New movie Phil Lynott: Songs For While I'm Away

Great band and what a cool cat Phil was. A true rock legend.
I only have Jailbreak (1976) and Renegade (1981) on LP. I really must address additional Lizzy purchases to my collection, as well as Phil's solo stuff.
Such a shame they never truly broke into the American market.
Oh those twin guitars, niiiiice.....

Parisienne Walkways (live)

Alas, I was too young to have ever caught them live.
But Live And Dangerous (1978), what an album (dubs & all)..!!

Robbo was always my favourite Lizzy guitarist, that solo at the end of the Live and Dangerous version of Still In Love With You is a classic, not the flashiest, but just amazing melodic playing.

Gary was a legend but I always thought he had a tendency to overplay a bit, like he was trying to show he was better than Gorham, whereas Robbo/Gorham were working together.

Awesome band, but Parisienne Walkways is almost like a parody song. Was never a fan of Gary Moore, even Out In The Fields brushes against musical parody! The Robbo/Gorham combo was unbeatable.

Edit: Gorham/Sykes was also fairly unbeatable, has to be said!

You'd love the B-side to that single.....

Parisienne Walkways was a Gary Moore solo song that Lynott featured on, so doesn't really have much relevance.

I'm more a fan of the early material, with Bell as guitarist. Much more interesting than the later stuff - which is great, obviously (apart from the last 2 albums, which were too cheesy overall) - a shame they didn't last longer in that incarnation.

Huh? What the jaaaaysis are ye talking bout? Is parody a good thing here? Class songs.

Love Lizzy and in a way I get what Chris is saying in terms of parody and humour was an all too essential aspect of songwriting back in the day that modern life seems to have no way to contend with. We've become so literal and binary in the way we see things. A great album is Phil's second album 'the PL album' that features Mark Knopfler and Midge Ure amongst others. Lots of humour mixed in with topics that snowflakes would shrivel up in a corner at these days. A man of many hues and contradictions, a complex and unique character and the music reflects all of that complexity.

As for Lizzy..well they really have some of the greatest tunes ever. Emerald, Balck Rose, Southbound. The list is endless. Love them.

Sounds interesting. Must check these lads out.

All of Spinal Tap's songs are class too. Both of those songs sound more like they were written as parody than in earnest. But since they were written in earnest by the very OTT Moore, it makes them even funnier! The never-ending sustain note in Parisienne Walkways, especially on certain live versions; simply hilarious!  When Johnny Comes Marching Home on synth at the end of Out In The Fields, man, how can you not laugh at that?

Either way, entertaining as they may be, neither of them can hold a candle to any of Thin Lizzy proper's best.

Aauugahhegh...I hear u though I wonder if that was just the craic back then before we all got stuck up our own holes about everythinhg

Anyway..the only non-Slade Christmas song you'll ever need.

Christmas doesn't get cooler than this!

I'm a fan of all the guitarists tbh
And don't dismiss Gary Moore
What an incredible talent

I've read 3 books on Philo
His mother
Some English Rock journalist
And some fella from Carrigaline, Cork

A fascinating life

Pity he's gone, but some legacy left behind

Just have 'Johnny The Fox' and 'Life Live'.

'Thunder and Lightning' is one I've been meaning to get, any use?
