Going in to see Rotting Christ in Melbourne this evening, supported by Jungle Rot who don't sound like my thing and some local death metal band I've never heard of. Hopefully they'll play some old stuff.

From the less that a minute I gave one of their songs earlier that's exactly what it sounded like. Plodding meat and potatoes DM with a fucked up production could be something worth getting the teeth into but with a sterile modern production and deathcore vocals it's never going to get off the ground for me.

Going in to see Rotting Christ in Melbourne this evening, supported by Jungle Rot who don't sound like my thing and some local death metal band I've never heard of. Hopefully they'll play some old stuff.

Seeing them next Friday, let us know how it goes.

And yeah Jungle Rot is D list non event death metal. They played here last week with suffocation. Just shows if you hang around long enough people will find anything 'essential old school death metal' because it's 20 years old.

The opening act whose name again  escapes me were typical brutal death metal. Nothing worth remembering for me.

Jungle Rot were the meatiest of meat, the potatoiest of potatoes, and smothered in lashings of groovy (you can have that one for free). Very catchy and fun for two or three songs. Impossible not to nod along to them, but that's because half the riffs were bouncy hardcore, half the riffs were nu metal and the third half were generic thrash. Incredible what you can do with fractions these days!

I wasn't exactly frothing at the tip to see Rotting Christ. I was expecting then to be pure grand. They fucking blew me away from the off. What a show! The first half was newer stuff, most of which I didn't know, but it came across brilliantly. The energy from the band, the charisma, the epic heavy metal vibe... it all clicked. A lot of the newer stuff I've heard has been a bit sterile sounding but live it seemed to take on new meaning. I was massively impressed. I went up to look at the merch at the start and they had Non Serviam on vinyl which I wanted. $70. Ehhh, pass.... before leaving I thought, fuck it, and I forked out 

Savage evening's entertainment. Defo hit that NZ leg!

RC have always been class live in my experience. I usually only listen to the early stuff these days, but seeing this thread this morning inspired me to throw on Theogonia, which I, along with much of the Irish scene, was bet into when it first came out. It is extremely "euro" yet still somehow manages to sound authentic. Have never lasted more than a few tracks with any of the stuff after it, all of which just sounded to me like weaker versions of Theogonia. Anything in the later stuff I might have misjudged, deserves more chances?

Killer! stoked for it now. 300 cap venue here and it's not sold out so should be a cool show.

They posted that they're going to hang around after the show by the merch table, just wondering how awkward it's gonna be to get the Tolis bros to sign my copy of Thy Mighty Contract without the 2 ring ins trying to.

Not sure what the capacity was last night but no more than 300. The place was packed.

Dunno what to suggest about the signing situation. Those other lads are big dudes and if they take offence you might be in trouble. Maybe let them sign it and then get the soapy sponge out when you get home

Mission successful. Wasn't expecting the Necromayhem Sig  Sound lads though. Really great show last night, RC sounded great. I don't really know anything after Triarchy so was surprised how much crowd interaction the newer stuff had/called for,  was like a Manowar show at points with the theatrics but fun all the same. The old stuff was killer live, would love to see an entirely old school set. Plenty of energy from the 2 ring in lads too. Fun night.

It's about time I give in and do a proper deep dive.
