I respect his touch on all the great 80s stuff, and tbh I DO sort of like Chic, but somehow it feels easier to say against it rather than for it.

The other 70s stuff you've posted is really good.

Converge - Axe to fall

Used to be curious about Converge back when it was all magazines and no internet. Where would you suggest starting with them?
You Fail Me is their best album, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.  Magnificent piece of music start to finish.  The remaster is excellent too but no problem with the original mix.  Actually they're all great to be fair with only the most recent album not standing the test, though I loved it when it came out it just hasn't stayed in rotation as much as the rest.

Thorns.
I'm locked and about to hit the sack but seeing this and just thinking about the dun-duddludun-dun-duddludun-duddludun of Underneath the Universe means i'll have to put the whole album on now instead

can't beat a bit of level 42

It's some sophisticated as fuck pop music, production is perfect, some of the tightest rhythm guitar you'll ever hear (and he's busting out more than a few power chords) coupled to some of the most recognisable bass lines of the 20th century. Then you have one of the most sampled songs in music history (Good Times) with a bass line so good Blondie and Queen decided to rip it off and it became ground zero and the founding stone of hip hop (as it was sampled in Rapper's Delight).

Nile Rodgers would end up producing some of the biggest records of the 1980s for Madonna, Bowie, Duran Duran and he's all over them. He's also produced Clapton, Jeff Beck, David Lee Roth, Mick Jagger, wrote Diana Ross' biggest album. He also wrote and played on a bunch of other artists' biggest hits.

Nothing from the world of metal (bar maybe Sabbath) comes close to the size and influence of Chic/Rodgers.

It's all off-topic though, innit ;)

Nile Rodgers & Chic live from the Isle Of Wight Festival on Sky Arts at 12:45 tonight for you funky fans.

Morrigan -  Enter the Sea of Flames
                     Plague, Waste and Death
                     Celts
                      Headcult

Elderwind-The Colder the Night. Epic beyond words. For those unable to wait any longer for Caladan Brood's second album this should tick a lot of boxes.

Darkthrone- sardonic wrath

An often overlooked gem.

Darkthrone massively overrated in general and that is coming from someone who has a soft spot for a lot of it.

TV Hunger is a very close 2nd only to DMDS for the greatest Black metal album ever.  Its Atmosphere and its incredibly minimalistic yet catchy songwriting never fail to give me goosebumps.

I will say something controversial about them though, I consider Blaze to be overrated and not even in their top 5 albums.

Not a fan of  that album either. I prefer their debut to it.

I think their last two albums are quite strong actually! Still I'm probably not listening to them as long as you. "You Fail Me" is great, of course you need to get to "Jane Doe" at some stage but it is quite an uncompromising listen.

Neurosis - Times of Grace

On the Converge discussion, All We Love...is my favourite, it's not their most intense or heaviest, but it's the one that got me into the band and the songwriting is deadly.

Funny you should say that, I had no interest in them until I heard "All We Love.." so then I tried the older albums and I still don't get most of it, despite the protestations of Ochoill

Opera IX - Call of the Wood

flashback to 1999 era album inlays; all those bands in the thanks list

Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel

"Melt" as it's commonly known. Brilliant track after brilliant track. What an album.
