Last night's listening, but of a year 2000 retro buzz:

Katatonia - Tonight's Decision
Katatonia - Discouraged Ones
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Nile - Black Seeds of Vengeance
Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines

I never really bothered with Nile back in the day, but I've been throwing them on from time to time over the last couple of years. In Their Darkened Shrines especially has some truly awesome metal on it.
Loved Black Seeds and Shrines back when they came out, but for some reason never checked out anything after, might remedy that today now...

I think post metal is a clear descriptor, I just refuse to place Neurosis in that bracket.

Odd, I'd have said that they defined the genre, back when they were good.

Love all those albums, probably my favourite Opeth album,Black seeds is a pure DM classic!

I've never listened to Katatonia! After listening to the AA podcast from last week I have to explore their stuff.
Black seeds is  so so heavy. Opeth's finest hour for me is Deliverence.
Today has been Misfits- Static Age
Ozzy - Ozmosis
Malthusian - The eps.

Yeah  Deliverence is a beaut of an album also.Get on Brave Murder Day ftom Katatonia,an unbelievable album, one of my all time favourite albums.

Still Life is my personal favourite Opeth, but all the ones from around that time and prior are classics. A band over-flowing with creativity at the time.

Yeah, get onto Katatonia Circle Pit! And if you're new to them, sure start from the beginning; it's not like this far into the game any of us going to be put off by stuff that's a bit rough around the edges. Discouraged Ones has a special place for me, I find it their most gothy, in the 80s style of goth, and that makes it unique in their discography for me; where their other albums bear an influence, that one almost sounds like an homage.

Discouraged Ones is my favourite too. No doubt in part cos it was the first I heard but the goth influence is a major factor too.

Even though some of the song structures are a little 'unorthodox', I love Orchid, so much going on, so many fizzy balls moments littered throughout.

Funnily enough I was listening to In their Darkened Shrines and the Catacombs one in the gym over the last couple if days. The former is gold, great album. The way that Unas Slayer of the Gods comes back in after the chanting bit, yowza.

They were a huge inspiration on a scene that missed the point of the band entirely. That's my own position on it. I find all of those post metal bands very wishy washy and polite whereas Neurosis at their best are like all the darkness of nature being vomited out of a volcano.

Nice. Don't know personally what I would have made of it had it been the first I heard. That was Tonight's Decision for me. In fact, their cover of Nightmares by the Sea is the first I ever remember hearing them. I knew it was a Jeff Buckley cover, but at the time I didn't know the original, so presumed, as it turned out incorrectly, that they'd added some major changes. It sounded awesome to me though! And of course, back then, I wasn't even on Napster, so I think it was another two years before I got around to hearing the original. Two years during which I listened to a lot of Katatonia!

Sear Bliss - Phantoms
                    The Haunting
                    Grand Destiny
                    Forsaken Symphony
                   Glory and Perdition

Yeah, that's a fairly accurate summary, although I definitely think some of less compelling Neurosis material after Times of Grace could be categorized as post-metal. Through Silver in Blood is a different beast altogether. Maybe I'm a bit wide of the mark here but, echoing McLove's sentiments, I think Neurosis are to post-metal what Faith No More are to nu-metal... definitely an inspiration on a wider scene that seemed to miss the point of their original influence.

Listening to a few AC tracks this week, a lot of total pish and bollocks but they do have some good choons in there. Still great craic reading the words on darklyrics, as funny now as when I was a ladín.

Primordial -Imrama.
In the Woods -Strange in Stereo.
My Dying Bride - A map of all failures.
The Gathering -Mandylion.
Type O Negative -October Rust.
