Trump asked NATO to send ships to help secure the Strait of Hormuz. Every. single. ally. refused. Trump called them "cowards" and said NATO has a "very bad future". He then announced that the United States doesn't actually need the Strait of Hormuz. He then said countries that do need it should police it themselves. He then told China to police it. He then sent 5,000 Marines toward it.

This sequence of statements was delivered, as far as the public record shows, by the same person, using the same mouth, within roughly 24 hours. The allies are cowards for not helping with the thing he doesn't need, which is why he's sending Marines to die for it, unless the countries that do need it do it themselves, which they won't, because they're cowards.

Trump told reporters the strait could be opened with a "simple military maneuver" that is "relatively safe" but requires "a lot of help". Help. From the cowards. Who he doesn't need. For the strait. That he also doesn't need.

He's fucked in the head, but what's worse is that his supporters can't see it, or are so indoctrinated or filled with hate for the other side that they think it's worth accepting as presidential behaviour.

They've been doing everything they can to make their followers as stupid as possible for a decade. And even that is only an amplification of a long-standing US policy. From Trump's perspective, this is all art of the deal stuff, optics of success, pure manipulation, as laid out in his own book. Maybe he's also fucked in the head, but he and his dynasty are still very much winning $$$

I don't think of him as being a successful manipulator for the simple fact that he is utterly incoherent and without any clear or obvious sense of direction. He's not even trying to convince anyone of anything, he's just like a cross between a five year old and a bill in a China shop. A Chaiiiiina shop.

I think some of what you say might be true but it looks and feels to me that the supporters have just accepted that for them to get the world they want, or something close to it (which they won't), he's the dude who can do it. Even if he's mental, he's not THEM!
