I've been listening to the NWN reissue of The Advent by lateeigthiesearlynineties Czech black metallers DAI online a fair bit over the past few weeks, and have just stuck in an order for the CD. Anyone else here given them a listen? To me the two most obvious comparisons that jump out are Root and Mortuary Drape, but they also sound like they may have had some influence on Ljosazabojstwa- at least they operate in a similar territory to them. The music isn't as complex or ambitious as Master's Hammer to my ear, but they have a certain sophistication all the same. It might just be in how focused and in control they sound compared to some of that era of Soviet bands. Well worth a listen, says me.

Nice one. That's deadly.

This is great stuff. Really hearing the Mortuary Drape in there. It seems that a lot of metal from eastern Europe around the late 80s and early 90s avoided whatever trends were popular in the US and just allowed a stranger sound to flourish. Not sure if that was due to records being harder to come by under Soviet rule or what, but it seems to have spawned a lot of very unique bands and albums.

Yeah definitely. I'm guessing these bands were tape trading outside of their areas but it's like they were more parochial in their approach to writing, which worked out really well.

The CDs arrived today and they look fucking great as expected from NWN. I have grown fond of the artwork on both releases actually. The demo collection is an odd choice with its pink backdrop, but it looks great and only adds to the obscurity. The Advent artwork is darker and very simple but the more I look at it the more curious I am as to what it is supposed to represent.

Looking forward to getting properly stuck in to these, and the Hades debut as well.
