My son is learning guitar at the moment and is progressing very well for a 10 year old, I would like to get him an electric guitar and practice amp, something that will realistically last  til he's buying his own.  He like me is a lefty so mus t be a Left hand  guitar. Something not too bulky also , amp wise - something that won't blow the doors off but a bit of fun too .
thanks in advance for any recommendations or advice on pickups etc as I know nothing about this really

Look up Thomann's Harley benton range.

completely depends how much money you want to spend and what way you want to go about the amp but yeah, harley benton guitar. could pick up a decent combo amp on adverts or the like.

Ah I wouldn't be too worried about pickups at this stage. I got my first electric when I was about 12 and it was probably some shitty Encore thing but at the time I was just so happy to have one that the brand or how it sounded didn't matter at all. I'd second Harley Benton (I'm probably about to buy one of their guitars just as a cheap yoke to have around the house as my "proper" guitar is in the rehearsal room), or even better, Thomann do a lot of "starter packs" with a beginners guitar and small practice amp etc. Good few Left Handed options too.

What kind of stuff is he looking to play?Like is he just learning a few chords or is he a tiny metaller who wants to pretend to be Kirk Hammet ?

I agree with this. Spend as little money as possible till he shows he's committed and he can really practice. I learned on the worst equipment and used them for years, which made me sound all the better when I finally got decent  stuff.

On a side note, I wish I could get my 10 year old into playing guitar like you! I bought an acoustic off Amazon for very very cheap for him and it sounds ok, but he is just not that interested.  I've tried to explain all the benefits of learning and playing, and there are a lot (like making it easier to meet girls when he gets older for instance!) but he is just not interested.
