I've tried to redo and just narrow it down to five by decade, one per band, and keep it as strict to metal as possible.

Ah FFS, can the same band appear across decades or just not appear twice in the same decade? 

OK, here goes, no bands repeating, ever. This is even harder than just five, I was selective with bands who might appear in a different decade. Could do with 20 each for the 80's and 90's, to be honest (or even just 90-93)

Killing Joke, Deep Purple, Boston, Skid Row, Van Halen, Thin Lizzy etc. I wouldn't have any of them down as metal TBH.
