I really don't like Pitchfork, but I'll certainly take my hat off to their glorious Greta Van Fleet review...and yes, I've probably posted this many times before but sure, good craic

Cursory glance at this lad's reviews and he's given Covenant a fairly miserly 48% so it's fair to say he's full of shit.
The merest mention of Metallica these days puts me in a bad mood but MOP is untouchable. And of course, it's all subjective really and there's plenty of classic albums I don't either get or particularly like. But that review is, as said, just silliness.

You could be right, I don't really follow this stuff closely enough to give a properly informed opinion, it was just something I picked up on the other day off the radio. That said though, regardless of who's engaging with who on the left, they probably need to work together in order to pose any real alternative to the FF/FG partnership. This result was depressingly inevitable.

Some commentator on Newstalk the other day made the point that there's a reluctance among the left to accept the primacy of SF as the major left party in this country. This fragmentation among the left means they're absolutely incapable of mounting a serious challenge to the established status quo. I think there's a degree of merit to that argument. Not that I particularly want a leftist government or anything, but the likes of PBP, for all their bluster, seem  content to sit on the sidelines. What's the point of coming up with a program for government etc when there's zero chance of ever making any meaningful change? As long as FF/FG are will to do business with each other, nothing will change without a decent opposition.

McEntee's success is a testament to short memory and cronyism in Irish politics. She presided over the Dublin riots and the general lawlessness in Dublin City Center (and other large population centers...Cork, Galway etc also gone to the dogs). But sure, she comes from good political stock so that's enough for a lot of people. Same old.

Very frustrating Autumn Nations overall. Apart from NZ, it just shows that we're well capable of beating decent enough teams, even with all the errors. These rudimentary errors are what will cost us the 6 Nations if we don't tighten up considerably.

Cars...a blessing and curse in equal measures. Wife's car was on the blink all week, just turned out to be the battery that needed replacing in the end. As a result, she got the use of my car for the week while I was forced to bus it (dutiful husband and all that). Her car finally got sorted today, whereupon I was informed that the clutch on my own yoke gave up the ghost today on the school run, and now we're back to square one. I am conscious that this all sounds very 'first world problems' but we're not really blessed with public transport locally and fucking hell, the mornings are cold when you're waiting for a bus at 5am

Quote from: astfgyl on November 27, 2024, 09:15:51 PMI remember those days fondly when I used to have Sunday and a midweek day off in my last job. I'd buzz around like a blue arsed fly for the first hour making sure I had all the usual housework done or whatever snag list the missus would have for me and then get as stoned as possible and game the absolute shit out of it and blare out the tunes in absolute peace. The fondest memories

Ah good stuff, glad to hear I'm not the only one who gets landed with a snag list!! I usually try to get that stuff sorted first thing so it's not hanging over me for the morning, but invariably I almost always forget to do one small thing and it's the first thing picked up on when she gets home.

Free gaff when missus is at work, kids are at school, and at least five uninterrupted hours when I get the Nintendo Switch/Xbox to myself. Maybe even a sneaky mid morning nap if I feel that way inclined.

Quote from: Eoin McLove on November 26, 2024, 10:09:16 PMThey have yet to click with me. I bought three of their CDs around fifteen years ago when they were being somehow linked to black metal as an influence. I reckon that was bullshit. I can understand why people like them and I admire the creativity and weirdness, but just couldn't quite get into what they were at. I think I'll stick on one of their albums now and see if the time is right.

I think I was first prompted to check them out under similar circumstances, the only thing I can think of is that maybe a few bands like Alcest had that shoegaze-y influence at the time and that's where the influence was coming from? But yeah, I didn't really get the fuss on my first listen and it only really sank in after a few repeats.

I didn't even properly read the link I posted, looks like he sold the brand in 2021. Unless he still profits off the promotion side of it, he's made his money from the brand. Anyway, drop in the ocean for that lad but I'm glad his name has been tarnished. Not that his scrote credentials were ever in doubt. He made some comment during the trial that it "wasn't in his nature" or words to that effect. Some laugh. It was very much in his nature when he lamped some auld fella in a pub because he wouldn't drink his whiskey. He's a fucking thug and always has been. I remember when he first came on the MMA scene, I was much more into the UFC back then. I was initially glad that Ireland finally had a decent fighter but I can't honestly remember the last fight I wanted him to win. Tbh if he was fighting that clown Jake Paul tomorrow, I know who I'd be going for.

Delighted to see the backlash kicking in. Lad's an absolute scumbag. He'll be minted for the rest of his life regardless but it's good to see that people are getting wise to him.

Quote from: astfgyl on November 26, 2024, 01:00:44 AMWhat would you do if ai drones came for you and your family tomorrow with the intention of getting rid of you, now that you've become a useless eater after your job became obsolete?

Dunno, if it was flying low enough I'd probably just swipe it with a broom.

Baby Reindeer was great. Stuff like that is so few and far between these days. I see that there's a Dune series out now, and an Alien prequel series is also on the cards. Are we really that bereft of ideas now?

Australia will be a much tougher prospect, I've no doubt the win against England has them on a bit of a high.
