Musicians forum / Guitar Amps
September 24, 2024, 09:45:05 PM
Thought there was an amps thread here before but I couldn't spot it - maybe just mixed in with the Music Gear general thread.

I've an option to pick up a reasonably decent amp soon but rather than overwhelm myself with usual Internet options, reviews, and endless info, I said I'd ask ye.

What are you all using nowadays and in what capacity?  What are you looking at picking up yourself, or what have you seen around that looks interesting?  Ideally guitar Amps but I don't particularly give a shit and like hearing about bass rigs too.  All good info.

Home use or live use, interested in it all, but for my own looking it is live and jamspace recording.  Anyway, amps thread, let me know what ye are at.

Metal Discussion / Best of 2023
December 01, 2023, 03:29:34 PM
I suppose it's time to start thinking about it.  I will probably revise this list the more I check out this month (same as every year, whatever I missed or needs a second chance will be revisited now) but these are, in no order, some of my favourites.

My absolute favourite mind is Great Falls - "Objects Without Pain"; it's just absolutely savage noise rock/hardcore/sludge/fuck knows what, I must have listened to it forty times since it came out.  High on the list is Dodheimsgard, Rezn, and Thantifaxath too, all got plenty of spins.  Anyway post your own lists, give out a bit, give me more to check out.

Dodheimsgard   -   Black Medium Current
Hands Up Who Wants To Die   -   Nil All
James Holden   -   Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space Of All Possibilities
Spotlights   -   Alchemy for the Dead
Rezn   -   Solace
Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs   -   Land of Sleeper
Jaaw   -   Supercluster
Godflesh   -   Purge
Thantifaxath   -   Hive Mind Narcosis
Agriculture    -   Agriculture
Various Artists   -   Heiladans 7
Blut Aus Nord   -   Disharmonium: Nahab
Celestial Sanctuary   -   Insatiable Thirst for Torment
Jute Gyte   -   Unus Mundus Patet
Tomb Mold   -   The Enduring Spirit
Great Falls   -   Objects Without Pain
Shardborne    -   Oars in the Water
Hexvessel   -   Polar Veil

Metal Discussion / Slift - Ilion
October 05, 2023, 09:41:16 AM
I think there's a fan or two here (at least I remember them coming up somewhere before) but there's a new Slift tune up and it is class.

slift.bandcamp.com

Album's not out until January so there'll likely be more released off it in the meantime.  Harder going than Ummon but very clearly the same band.  For anyone who doesn't know:  Psych, hard rock, fast paced but spacey - worth a spin anyway to see what you get.

Metal Discussion / Earth
April 22, 2023, 11:19:47 AM
Was looking for a thread to post a link in but didn't see one.  All Earth albums from Hex onwards are a Euro each for the weekend on Bandcamp, should anyone be interested:

https://earthsl.bandcamp.com/

Very fond of them, with The Bees... and Earth 2 likely being my favourites, though I enjoy them all in some way.  Took me a long time to come around to Angels... I & II mind, but they're class too when you're in the form for it.

Anyway general thread, just wanted to post the link for ye.

Metal Discussion / Godflesh - Purge (New Album)
March 01, 2023, 08:14:31 PM
Seems to have been posted on the Plastic Head Distro site but nowhere else so far - bizarre, but seems to be real.

Edit:  More info from https://www.plastichead.com/godflesh-purge-compact-disc-arec066cd

QuoteFirst new recordings from GODFLESH since 2017's critically acclaimed full length 'POST SELF'.

'PURGE' musically, amongst the many layers of dirt, revisits and updates the concepts explored on the 'PURE' album from 1992; 90's hip hop grooves mangled and put through the GODFLESH filter to create something that is still unique and futuristic in style.

Both minimal and maximal, with layer upon layer of filth and heaviness, Godflesh deliver alien grooves that swing whilst also retaining the psychedelic / bad trip edge that Godflesh has always obsessed over. This is, and always has been, feel bad music; the title alone 'PURGE' references directly how songwriter / creator Justin K Broadrick utilises this music as temporary relief from his diagnosed autism and PTSD, a journey he has been on since he began creating music and feeling alone and as an outsider in any 'scene' or 'group' from childhood and throughout his adulthood.

Godflesh gives him the means to express a lifetime of feeling misunderstood and overwhelmed by hyper sensitivity, the band being the vehicle to give him some sense of catharsis and transcendence; a way of communicating overload and constant disenchantment at the human condition, and man's abuse of power and the systems that chain us.

The album references the cycle of horror that man has always and will always put us through; those in positions of power revel in the infliction of pain and horror upon individuals, in the name of their religion, their power, their money, their flags....

8 songs, delivered in a concise fashion for fellow outsiders.

A digital only single of the opening song 'NERO' coupled with 3 self remixes will be released April 3rd.

The duo of GODFLESH, Justin K Broadrick and Ben Green, augmented by Machines, are seen as a pivotal entity in the world of 'heavy' music, impacting entire cultures of heavy music since the bands inception in 1988. It is regarded as a cultural icon, and it's impact can be felt across generations of 'heavy' music, both mainstream and underground. It is credited as being one of the first bands to cross old British industrial music with down tuned primitive minimal metal, accidentally pioneering the 'industrial metal' sound, yet the band has so much more to offer than what that term displays.

Along with vinyl, CDs, Shirts up for preorder at the link above.

Metal Discussion / Dodheimsgard (New Album)

No thread for them, but likely a few fans in here.  New Dodheimsgard album announced a few days back, details here: https://peaceville.com/bands/dodheimsgard/

No music up off it yet though.  Will be keeping an eye on this, absolutely loved the last album, still listen to it regularly.

Metal Discussion / Ochoill - "Considerations" (EP)
November 30, 2020, 01:24:44 PM
Said I'd post this here if anyone is interested.  I've slowly put together an EP, "Bell Nails", over the course of the year.  It is done since the weekend and online today.  If you like a bit of odd electronic/industrial/metal/rock, you might enjoy this.  Synth and Drum Machine heavy, layers of guitars and noise, a few samples, all DIY, mostly stuck together in my house.  It's up for free download at bandcamp at the link below.  All feedback appreciated.  Cheers for checking it out!

ochoill.bandcamp.com

Don't know what to put in as FFO, but it is inspired by the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Faith No More, Devin Townsend, Foetus, Killing Joke, Ulver, Type O, and one very particular bit of Green Velvet.

Metal Discussion / Anathema on hiatus
September 22, 2020, 07:46:43 PM
Since there's a few fans of the band here, limited info but it seems they're done for a while.  Would be a fan of a few of their albums around Judgement, though I wasn't gone on the last few it's a shame they're done, never got a chance to see them live either unfortunately.  And yeah though it says hiatus, I imagine it is permanent.

General Discussion / EXPTV
July 13, 2020, 02:27:30 PM
http://www.exptv.org

Some of ye might get a kick out of this.  A friend sent me their instagram page this morning, I found the actual site from there.  Basically seems to be a streaming TV channel of old archived footage from stations worldwide, and films, all cobbled together in short bursts, 2-5 minute segments of unrelated footage from old 60s american TV shows could be back to back with psychedelic cartoons from Europe.  A collective of lads put it together over hours and hours of collected tapes; a better description of the whole thing and how it works can be read here.

The video breaks are cool but I'm interested to see the actual programs on during the week too, there's a TV guide effort on the page if you go to it.  Plenty of music based sections on nightly.

Classifieds / Quill Effects (DIY Guitar Pedals)
October 23, 2019, 11:20:43 AM
Using this thread to post hand built guitar and bass effects pedals I am currently making.  This is mostly hobby but I sell everything.  I build a range of distortions, overdrives, fuzzes, boosts, and functional pedals.  If it's not in the thread but is something you are after, let me know.  Most are stripboard builds and are modded versions of existing pedals, some are PCB builds in short runs.  Artwork varies.  Cheers for the interest.

Shop:
https://quilleffects.bigcartel.com
- updated when a larger run of pedals are available.  For one offs and small runs, they're usually on sale in this thread / via DM for now.

also will post builds on instagram.com/quilleffects too, but that's just started so it's a bit bare looking.
