Metal Discussion / Best/Worst Outputs
March 09, 2026, 10:52:24 AM
A bit of craic in this time of oil rises and all kinds of bollocks

Completely subjective but which are the best and worst outputs form the "bigger" bands, studio albums only

I'll start with a few M's

Megadeth
Best - RIP
Worst - Risk

Metallica
Best - MOP
Worst - St. Anger

Motorhead
Best - Ace Of Spades
Worst - Hammered

Metal Discussion / Your Prime Years
January 16, 2026, 01:10:57 PM
What were your prime years as a metalhead? Prime for me means no other music mattered, scene excitement, mystique etc etc

For me its 86-96, bands were mystical figures that could only be read/seen in Kerrang, Metal Hammer or when you had enough money to buy a cassette or vinyl (cd's were a 90s thing for me), getting to Dublin/Belfast for a gig was difficult (well difficult for me anyway)

I remember tuning into the BBC Friday Night rock show (with hit and miss reception) to Tommy Vance, Alan Freeman, Johnny Walker to hear Metallica for the first time, Manowar, DIO even Ted Nugent, fuck me even Larry Gogan use to play Harvester of Sorrow on the Sunday top 40 countdown. I would save up and make the trip to Dublin to hit HMV/Virgin Megastore and buy what was on my to get list, then eventually the sound cellar, before that I used to order CD's from ST Records in the UK, sterling postal orders were a pain but the only way

In 91 we got SKY TV in so Headbangers Ball was available, that was a game changer for access to new bands, Glam/Thrash/Classic Rock.

From 96 on, and especially when Nu-Metal arrived on the scene its just never been the same, even before the internet took a real hold.

86-96 = my plateau!!

Metal Discussion / Couldn't be bothered anymore
August 19, 2025, 11:29:57 AM
Bands you really used to like and still listen to their old stuff, but couldn't be arsed anymore with their new stuff (lets say their last 3-4 albums) and even in this free download era haven't bothered to listen to it for free that never mind buy the CD or whatever

for me its

Metallica
Maiden
Megadeth
Def Leppard
ACDC

Who is on your "can't be fucking arsed anymore" list?

So all bands have an album that is regarded as their "best", some rightly so, others I'm not so sure if it's valid

One of those is Monster Magnets "Powertrip", generally listed in a lot of polls as their best but for me its the one I hardly ever listen to. I'm not saying its bad, it's just not what best represents MM for me

When I want a dose of MM I reach for "Dopes To Infinity" each and every time

Anyone else in the same position regarding other bands "pinnacle" albums?

Metal Discussion / Worst? but your favourite?

A lot of bands albums get shat on, some rightly so, others I'm not so sure if it's valid

For me one of those is ACDC's "Fly On The Wall", generally listed in a lot of polls as their worst but for me its the one I listen to again and again from the Johnson era followed by "For Those.."

Brian's singing on the album is savage, complete balls in a vice stuff, great youtube comment "Brian is like spitting electricity from his mouth", some superb riffs as well "Shake Your Foundations", "Sink The Pink", "Back In Business", the production isn't as polished as other albums but it matters not. The videos that were made for the singles are cheesy but good craic as well.

Anyone else have a fav album from a band that's generally seen as the bottom of the pile by others?

Metal Discussion / Y&T

Where to start? The only song I've heard from them in the past was "Summertime Love" and I didn't like it at all, however recently I've been hearing the odd tune on the internet radio and though to myself that's not to shoddy, they possibly seem to have a bit more balls than I thought, any tips for an album to start with for an impatient fucker?

Metal Discussion / Hated but why?
February 02, 2025, 02:53:06 PM
Bands that are hated or devisive and the reasoning?

Let's get the ball rolling,

Bush

They seem to be generally despised despite being huge in the mid 90s, I always found them harmless and with some good tunes but because they deemed to be Nirvana lite elements of the press hated them, that's my take on it anyway. Plus the UK press hate bands that break the US first and skip the UK?

I've been thinking about this for a good few years now. Back in the day it would have been all Angus Young, Fast Eddie and nothing else, on mature reflection and after going through all flavours of the month, for me it's Gary Moore. I think its his ability to melt your face but also his phrasing is just class, if David Gilmour ever went through a more metal/rock phase I think he would be Gary Moore. So for me its Moore.

My second favourite would be Steve Jones

Metal Discussion / Riffs
June 25, 2024, 01:29:01 PM
Ok lets fire this one up, lets get some of our favourite riffs out there, the song can be good or shite but if it has a deadly riff somewhere let us know. No "Sweet Child Child o' Mine" type stuff, only  meat and veg riffs...

I'll fire this one up as its been in my head all morning (and has been since it was first released), the first 30 seconds are savage...

General Discussion / Electrics/Electronics
May 09, 2024, 11:46:30 AM
Hi All, anyone on here into electrics/electronics? I'm a complete newbie to it all but if I had to do my career choices all over again I'd definitely be an electrician or come kind of electronics engineer, so I've taken my first tentative steps into it all, bought a few books, got a breadboard, multi-meter, resistors, LEDs, etc etc. I've made a small circuit which lit up an LED, well fuck me it was like the first time I saw a real life fanny or my first "Hello World" written in C, what a buzz!!

Where this will go I'm not sure, I'd like to hope I would be able to troubleshoot basic electronic issues some day without electrocuting myself but that's way down the line, I have 2 guitar amplifiers that don't work so If I could figure out whats happening there eventually..

I know there are few people on here who make the own pedals etc, I'm assuming that you would have done a college courses or did you just pick it all up as hobbyists over time?

Musicians forum / Stompbox
June 27, 2023, 01:50:38 PM
Hi All, I'm asking this on behalf for someone else. There are looking for a drum stompbox that they can use with an acoustic guitar, so basically the ask is they want to tap out a beat while playing, the device records it then plays it in a loop, and this can be controlled by foot only. Loads of ones out there but they are either too finnicky, too expensive or just dont specify if they have this functionality.

Closest thing I can find is this

https://www.thomann.de/ie/ortega_horse_kick_pro_stomp_box.htm

However it doesn't record, you just tap along with your foot as you play, if you could record the initial foot taps then loop it it would be perfect, also if it was all via foot control it would be even better...

Any ideas you gearheads??  :)
