I didn't notice it at the time but were Kerrang! ever a metal magazine?

Just for nostalgia,  I was looking at their 'best of' list 1993:

https://www.besteveralbums.com/thechart.php?c=20784&cbid=0&f=&fv=&orderby=Rank&sortdir=asc&page=1

and 1994:

Had forgotten there wasn't a lot of 'metal' there, loads they could've included.?   I was fooled as a youngster  buying it

General Discussion / Is rock dead
September 23, 2024, 10:14:53 PM
I keep seeing/ reading this boring old narrative that "rock is dead", "there are no bands".. so tired and pointless. There are plenty of rock/ punk / etc take your pick bands out there, do your damn research.

The Tony Martin era gets the reissue treatment finally BUT is there any reason why 'The Eternal Idol' got left out? Guess I'll hold onto my copy of it so.

Thought this might be of interest but does it have any implications for Europe?.

General Discussion / Record players
January 31, 2024, 08:38:35 PM
Besides the usual (very expensive) Technics record players, are there any models audiophiles here could recommend? Good sound/quality for affordable prices ? The player I had unfortunately bit the dust.

Metal Discussion / Overplayed rock songs
October 25, 2023, 09:15:17 AM
We all know them, songs you just can't get away from how hard you try. Don't the bands themselves get sick of them too?

Currently in a shop and 'Sweet Child O Mine' by GNR is playing. Makes my stomach churn. Other songs I would add to this list that I don't need to hear again is 'Enter Sandman' or 'Highway to Hell'. Stop playing these songs people!.

So..
I was at lunch with some people who don't drink much, grand. I get myself one beer extra than the one I already had, sit back down and I get looks, someone comments "Another beer?". Embarrassment sinks in, I try to defend myself with the usual patter of "I'm Irish haha", but they don't buy it. Who cares,  I drink my second small beer in silence.
It led me to wonder if the Irish drinking thing is a cliché or are there any more nationalities 'worse' than the Irish for drinking as far as international reputation goes?

I still can't believe this moment from 'Friends' :  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcHVb-rcx7Y

Any other famous metal references from pop culture, mention them here.

General Discussion / Old, defunct Dublin venues
October 09, 2021, 07:38:03 PM
I remember seeing Agnostic Front play in Dublin many moons ago, around 2002, at a place called 'The Shelter'

( Video of said gig here:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pj4Aq-mw2U ).

What are some gig spaces you remember around Dublin? Lower Deck springs to mind too, saw Insect Warfare play there one night.

Metal Discussion / Shows you saw in the SFX
August 09, 2021, 07:19:36 PM
Not sure if there is any interest in this but saw this video and wanted to post it mainly because the SFX was a place I have only been to once in my life ( seeing Slayer, in 2000). What are your memories of the SFX`?.

Here is Dave Mustaine talking to COC, presumably backstage there?

General Discussion / The Type O Negative thread
July 07, 2021, 10:08:45 PM
Just wanted to dedicate a thread to this band since I see many here are fans. Never saw them live but I remember being in a squat in Mannheim, Germany, 1995, (long story) and some skinheads (I was sharing a room with) were talking about this music festival they had been to. They described Peter Steele like he was a god, "this huge man drinking a bottle of wine onstage".  I am not sure what they found amazing about that but they liked it all anyway.

I since went on a TYPE O binge and that hasn't stopped. The last one great album I heard from them was 'World Coming Down', first track amazing. Rest in Peace Peter Steele.

What are your memories of this band live or your favorite albums

General Discussion / Cassettes
December 22, 2020, 11:44:34 PM
Just wondering whether anyone here is into buying/collecting metal on cassette tapes. Or any other kind of music.  I started a new collection  (mostly classic metal to underground metal) after stupidly selling a load of my metal tapes back in the day.

I see Tool had a cassette version of their last release and while I am not the biggest fan of the band, I still think its cool that they did so, I think even some pop stars have also released cassettes recently.

There is something quite vibrant and organic sounding about tapes, especially if they are old and you have decent enough equipment to play them on.

Metal Discussion / Record deals
September 16, 2020, 09:34:29 PM
I was watching this video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPHjNG1m22I

..in which Dave Lombardo describes the record industry, specifically the deal that was made for Slayer.

It shocks me how little money some of these 'big' names make when signing deals. What is the state of record deals now and how can bands nowadays make a living from their music? How does it work now when social media seems to be the key factor in making it 'big`' ?

General Discussion / Synthwave thread
August 26, 2020, 11:29:58 PM
Apologies if there is a thread for this already. There was a thread on the old site about synthwave and darkwave, thought I would start another one if anybody is interested.

I am not sure if it is still an active genre as it seems very much tied in with the 80s nostalgia buzz going back a few years but I still very much enjoy some of these albums.

Post your favourites.

I still go back to this, which I think was recommended on the other site: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHSA0Pi_uZc

Metal Discussion / One album bands
May 01, 2020, 07:38:59 PM
What are your favourite one album only bands? not metal but I wanted to start this off on an Irish note as I discovered this Irish psychedelic band from the sixties who just released one album. Eire Apparent 'Sunrise' (1969), they were friendly with Jimi Hendrix apparently.

Metal Discussion / The 'other' Black Sabbath albums
March 20, 2020, 01:00:53 AM
Post Ozzy albums, which are your favourites?. A lot of people talk about the Dio era but I have lately enjoyed listening to 'The Eternal Idol' with Tony Martin (pretty badass in places) and 'Seventh Star' with Glenn Hughes.  Speaking of Dio I also happen to think that 'Dehumanizer' is overlooked, it has some good tracks ('TV crimes' especially).

General Discussion / Killing Joke
August 10, 2019, 01:11:02 AM
I am posting this in the 'off topic' section because this isn't a metal band per se but today I was listening to 'Love Like Blood' and was curious about other songs or releases by the band that people here could recommend? I know that there are probably a few fans of the band here. Thanks :abbath:

Metal Discussion / Voivod thread
June 21, 2019, 10:50:52 PM
I don't quite know how to categorize this band as they have been all over different genres over the years, but I think they ultimately defy categorisation, one of the few bands that do. I would like to say 'Thrash' or 'Rock' or 'Prog' but that just insults their output. What are your 'go-to' albums by the band? A true consistently inconsistent band.
Mine are ´Killling Technology', 'Angel Rat',  'The Outer Limits', got the 'We are connected' 7" too (all completely different) but I know I'm missing a lot of others, what are your favourites and have you ever seen them live?

Metal Discussion / Side-projects/supergroups
February 08, 2019, 11:08:52 PM
What are your favoured side projects or 'super groups' (past and present) from favourite artists? Also, your least favoured and why,

Some of my favourites are/were; Temple of The Dog (Pearl Jam/Soundgarden),  Nailbomb (Sepultura/Fudge Tunnel) , S.O.D. (Anthrax/Nuclear Assault/M.O.D), robot (Dave Grohl + ..) to name but a few.

Least favourite was Fight (Rob Halford) although it did alright for the time.
