Just seen this announced on their socials, looking forward to seeing them again.

Heard a leak of the new album and it sounds pretty good, heavier than the singles would suggest.

Metal Discussion / I need a saga, what's the saga?

Its Songs for the Deaf...

Just seen that this absolute classic turned 20 years old today. Debated posting this here or in the off-topic section but fuck it, it's heavy as fuck and kicks hoop. It's got everything you'd want from a great rock n roll album, Sabbath heaviness, Motorhead aggression, Tom Waits weirdness, three unique lead vocalists, and Dave Grohl where he belongs banging away on drums (dare I say the best thing he's put his name to?).

I don't mind some of the later stuff, Like Clockwork is a fantastic record, but they never quite captured the lightning in the bottle this album had, I sometimes stick on this bootleg from before the album came out with Homme, Oliveri, Lanegan and Grohl, the chemistry they had was amazing.

Hi lads,

I'm a guitarist based in Dublin trying to put a doom-ish metal band together and I'm looking for a bassist and drummer.

I have a wide variety of influences but the general idea would be the heaviness and scope of bands like YOB, Primordial and Neurosis, along with more 'classic' bands such as Sabbath, Celtic Frost, Trouble, Cathedral etc.

Going for a more riff/songwriting based approach rather than super slow/droney stuff.

Get in touch if you or someone you know might be interested.

I'm in my mid 20's if that makes any difference.

Metal Discussion / Mastodon - Remission
May 28, 2022, 07:11:07 AM
20 years for this classic today (High on Fire's 'Surrounded by Thieves' released on the same day coincidentally).  Whatever your opinion of their recent stuff, there's many bands that would kill to have this as their best album, and they went on to better it with Leviathan and Crack the Skye.

Just have it spinning now and even though it's a completely different beast to what they are now it's easy to see why they where destined to catch on with so many people, a bit of the chaos from 90's noise rock/metallic hardcore, a bit of the murkiness of sludge metal, a pinch of southern rock in the guitars, and just enough classic metal to tie it all together, an all timer imo.

Metal Discussion / Kanonenfieber (Black/Death)

Just read about these guys and enjoying this album that came out last year. A German WW1 themed BM/DM band, big riffs, lots of melody, the production is a bit clean but I can look past that. Might scratch a MGLA buzz, or Dissection at a push. The album art is also fantastic, taken from an old Hungarian WW1 propaganda poster apparently.

Metal Discussion / Priest as a four piece?
January 12, 2022, 02:00:15 PM
This is a strange one, seems as though Priest have decided to let go of Andy Sneap (as a touring guitarist) and continue as a four piece, while they're not as reliant on guitar harmonies as much as Maiden would be, it still seems odd considering how many of their songs have trading solos, there will be a lack of heaviness during solos too due to no backing guitar.

Wonder what caused this decision as Sneap will still be producing the next album, and I'm sure they would have no difficulties finding someone else.

Metal Discussion / Mastodon - New album
September 11, 2021, 06:54:18 AM
Just seen Mastodon have a new album out next month called Hushed and Grim, single and artwork has been released.

The art is pretty cool, kinda Game of Thrones-y, it was done by Paul Romano who did the art for the first 4 albums.

Not sure what to think of the single yet, it's more dissonant than the stuff they've been doing the last few years, but with a melodic Brann Dailor chorus which I think they've been relying on a bit heavily on the last few.

Hopefully the album is good anyway.

Metal Discussion / New Pallbearer album/track.
July 10, 2020, 07:58:34 PM
New album out in October and they just released a new track, just listening now but it's heavier than I was expecting, chorus is very Sabbath/Type O-ish.

Don't know what to make of the artwork either, looks like the cover to a 70's prog rock album.

Acid Bath have finally been added to Spotify, their music has been very hard to find over the years so good news, both albums and a compilation of demos.

Metal Discussion / Ozzy Osbourne New Album
November 23, 2019, 09:52:15 PM
New album out in January but tbh the circumstances surrounding it are a bit strange. He guested on a single by the rapper Post Malone a couple of months that went to the top 10 and now he got Post Malone's guitarist to produce/co-write the album, a guy called Andrew Watt. Looked him up and it seems like he's most known for playing guitar for the likes of Justin Bieber .

Seems like an attempt to cash in on the single, it does have Duff McKagan on bass and Chad Smith on drums, but most of the guitar is by Watt apparently, other than a guest appearance by Slash.

Not particularly hopeful, but I just thought it's a bit weird.

Just saw this and thought it was funny, wouldn't have thought you'd expect to get paid for making a one off guest appearance, 20 years is a bit late to start complaining, although he does have a book coming out .

Might as well start the puns 'It's only Money'.

Anyone given this a listen?

For anyone that doesn't know them they're a psychedelic rock band from Australia. Apparently they've been teasing a thrash metal album for a while and this is it. To be honest I've only listened to bits and pieces of their stuff before but I thought this seemed interesting enough to finally check out a full album.

I have to say it's actually pretty good, I very rarely listen to modern thrash but there's enough outside influence to keep it interesting. Lot of weird atonal stuff. Some parts also have an acid rock vibe, life if Uncle Acid were playing Thrash.

They've released 15 albums since 2012, so you'd wonder what the ratio of good/filler is like but this is hitting the spot.

Elder have a new instrumental EP out. They also have a proper full length album coming out later this year.

This is a strange one,  Tau Cross had a new album coming out next month and Relapse have pulled the album and dropped them from the label  after it was brought to their attention a holocaust denier was credited by Rob Miller in the liner notes for inspiring lyrics on the album.

According to Relapse's statement the other members didn't know about the guy thanked.

Would love to know how you go from being in Amebix to being a holocaust denier.

Metal Discussion / Baroness - New album
June 10, 2019, 04:43:13 PM
Just seen Baroness have a new album streaming, out this Friday.

Only a couple of tracks in but there's some interesting stuff in it, one of the tracks even has blast beats ???, if you're expecting Sludge metal though don't bother. It's more like proggy stoner rock.

I must say the mix is absolutely terrible though, they got some flak for it on the last album too but they said it's an artistic choice which is absolutely retarded.

Metal Discussion / Spirit Adrift

Any fans of these guys here?

Just listening to their new album Divided by Darkness now because I've been seeing their name everywhere. Apparently they started out as a more traditional doom band but they've gone more straight up 80's style Heavy Metal, with a bit of thrash thrown in.

The vocals could be a little better but they're not bad enough to ruin it.

Hi lads, I'm a 21 year old lead guitarist looking to form a heavy rock/metal band in Dublin (preferably with people around the same age range).

Influences include Black Sabbath, Mastodon, Queens of the Stone Age, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden etc.

Looking to write originals with the intention of eventually recording and gigging.
