THRASHOCORE Webzine

Jamais avare de talents, le Brésil délivre régulièrement des formations très solides (FOSSILIZATION en récente tête de gondole) dans nombre de registres extrêmes, les petits nouveaux de GORENCEPHALIC entendant bien se faire une place dans la sphère death metal à tendance brutale. Enfin, nouveaux... Le batteur Yuri Hamayano a joué dans MYSTIFIER entre 2006 et 2013 (période de vaches maigres puisque seules des compilations sont parues) et il a également participé à DEFORMITY BR (grind death) aux côtés du chanteur – bassiste Krusius Barreto. Cette paire expérimentée est ici accompagnée de deux guitaristes au passé plus confidentiel, ces présentations d'usage visant surtout à vous faire comprendre, lecteurs voraces, que Gore of the Forgotten est certes un premier EP mais enregistré par des types au background respectable.
C'est vrai, elle ne fait pourtant pas bien envie cette pochette aux teintes verdâtres, néanmoins cohérente avec les sujets abordés : médecine légale, trépanation, expérimentations diverses sur des cadavres... Le catalogue est classique, on en connaît les tenants et les aboutissants, cela ne doit cependant pas être un frein à la découverte. En effet, derrière des compositions que j'apprécierais davantage développées (rien n'atteint les quatre minutes), se lovent de belles influences CANNIBAL CORPSE (période Fisher) qui, sans atteindre la technique des Américains, développent suffisamment de groove pour qu'il soit difficile de ne pas y succomber. À titre personnel, c'est surtout la prestation vocale qui m'émoustille les tympans, joliment gutturale, sonnant d'une façon naturelle avec un timbre grassouillet à souhait, façon « bain de friture ». Il faudrait également noter la qualité de l'enregistrement : tu entends immédiatement que tu as affaire à des professionnels. Le son est ample, puissant, mettant en valeur chacun des protagonistes tout en affirmant le goût des musiciens pour des rythmiques écrasantes. Par conséquent, pour ce qui est du sérieux et de la mise en place, GORENCEPHALIC se pointe avec de gros godillots, tout respire le brutal death pure souche et sans dire qu'on se prend une claque, le quatuor fait largement mieux que nombre de ses concurrents directs, en restant simple, en visant juste, sans aucune esbrouffe. Et c'est vraiment ainsi que j'apprécie le death, dans son épaisseur malsaine, te roulant dessus sans pitié.
Il reste que le disque, avec seulement quinze minutes au compteur, manque encore de profondeur pour valider définitivement le potentiel destructeur, la réédition CD proposée par Nihilistic Holocaust Records offrant tout de même généreusement trois bonus : le single « Body Snatcher » de 2025 ainsi que deux live inédits : « Procedure » puis « Agony Yells ». C'est un argument qui va dans le bon sens, bien que pour ma part je préfère attendre un LP qui, je le souhaite de tout cœur, saura me soutirer louanges et émerveillements. Sosthène

GUTS OF DARKNESS Webzine

Avec une pochette pareille, un nom pareil et un titre d'album aussi explicite, on peut bien reconnaitre aux Brésiliens de ne tromper personne sur la marchandise. Car oui, si vous en doutiez un moment, Gorencephalic pratique un Death Metal brutal bien inspiré des premiers Cannibal Corpse. Ça tabasse sans relâche, on est pas là pour faire de la dentelle mélodique !
Cet EP ''augmenté'' que nous propose le label Nihilistic Holocaust est surtout un moyen de faire découvrir le groupe outre Atlantique en y incluant la démo du même nom ainsi que deux titres live.
Car si le groupe est encore assez récent (il a été formé en 2023), il est néanmoins constitué de vétérans de la scène, passés par Deformity, Mystifier ou encore Martyrdom. Tout dans cet EP fleure bon les 90's : un son assez imparfait et très variable d'un titre à un autre, un chant un peu linéaire, mais qui progresse au fil des morceaux, et cette volonté de livrer un produit brut, direct, et sans fioriture. Tout ça pourrait sonner comme des défauts, mais c'est tout ce qui faisait le charme des productions achetées au hasard sur des listes de distribution sur la seule foi d'une ligne de description ou d'un nom outrancieusement provocateur.
Alors certes, Gorencephallic ne révolutionnera rien au sein d'une scène déjà bien fournie, mais l'on ne peut qu'apprécier cette volonté de préserver la flamme des petites productions artisanales. D'ailleurs les titres live bonus donnent un bon aperçu de ce que doit donner le groupe sur scène, soit typiquement le groupe à apprécier dans une petite salle, avec un public motivé pour remuer le moshpit sous une douche de bière. Soit un moyen comme un autre de retrouver ses 20 ans.

METAL REVOLUTION Webzine

Gorencephalic is a death metal four piece combo from Feira de Santana, Bahia (Brazil). The line-up of the band founded in 2023, is comprised of Krusius Barreto (bass & vocals), Yuri Hamayano (drums), Andrey Braga (guitar) and Fulvio Alsan (guitar). In spite of the fact that the band was formed just three years ago, the quartet features some experienced musicians from the Brazilian scene – formerly of bands like Deformity BR.
As mentioned above, the band was created in 2023 when they also released two digital singles. Then their debut EP, entitled Gore of the Forgotten, was released on a professional CD in Brazil. This is the European version of the CD, featuring bonus tracks (two bonus live songs only on the CD!) through French based, Nihilistic Holocaust Records. Gore of the Forgotten is again professionally packed with all the essential information on the band.
Now to the most important thing, my thoughts on this eight-tracker CD. I would describe their sound as a mixture between brutal- and old-school death metal. The main focus is on creating a raw, brutal, old-school and slightly technical death metal sound. They successfully carrying it out with catchy and well-crafted guitar riffs and numerous addictive melodic lines, with the vocals which are deep and growling, and finally the bass which is audible and well-executed. First five or six tracks from Gore of the Forgotten all differ in character; from a direct classic brutality, through more technicaly complex and slightly abstract structures, often supplemented by a dark, doomish and almost a black metal atmosphere.
Having listened to Gore of the Forgotten for the fifth time now, I can tell that I begin to like these two live bonus tracks, "Procedure" and "Agony Yells", more and more, as these two tracks both sound exceptionally heavy and brutal, while they simultaneously bring the true spirit of their raw and old-school artistry, emotional vulnerability and a spontaneous creativity that these four guys definitely possess.
Thus, the music features a dynamic mix of varied and engaging and appealing tempo shifts, often changing between fast and aggressive sections to more heavy and rhythmic moments. These rhythmic moments are perfectly exemplified on third song called "Metrazol Convulsions", featuring many rhythmic moments, accompanied by some other parts that are faster. The production is raw, organic and analog-sounding, bringing a 90s aesthetic to the material while it evokes nostalgia through textured warmth.
Ultimately; Gore of the Forgotten is a promising and high-quality debut EP. I will strongly motivate and encourage fans an old-school brutal and technical death metal (and worshippers of a late 90s acts like Sinister, Cannibal Corpse, Excoriate, Adrenogore, Mortal Decay...) to keep an eye on the band.

GORENCEPHALIC/Gore of the Forgotten (Nihilistic Holocaust Records)
While this band is doing nothing new, this is still some kick ass old school death metal in the vein of Immolation and Incantation. A pure speed delight with tons of power, fury and hate within the music. Sick vocals are another highlight, as I loved them and they fit the music perfectly. The riffing is so damn intense, and along with the speed, power and feeling just rules. Tons of emotions and feelings on this. The production also maintains that old-school feel, and I loved it big time. Death metal fans will love this as did I. Takes me back to the 90's with this feeling and playing. VOICES FROM THE DARKSIDE Webzine (Ger)

Time for Death Metal. GORENCEPHALIC is a Death Metal band from Brazil, formed in 2023, about which I had no idea. But this is the beauty of Metal, getting great surprises. I think I have said it before, when I see the word "Brutal" prefixed to the words "Death Metal", I immediately enclose myself in my wall of preventions, since, I must admit that I am not a very good receiver of this style. However, once "Gore Of The Forgotten", the band's first EP, started playing, I was instantly captivated. I liked the sound, the voice, the style, the very diverse tempos in which the band undulates, from one side to the other, permanently accelerating and decelerating. Playing with the vocals up and down, with a certain level of reverb (which fascinates me so much). Anyway, an EP that little by little, second by second, was trapping me more and more in its net. The tracks are very Death Metal. With the imprint of Death Metal, so I found it fascinating. GORENCEPHALIC's line-up is Krusius Barreto (bass, vocals), Yuri Hamayano (drums), Andrey Braga (guitar) and Fulvio Alsan (guitar), forming a quartet that knows how and where to put the meat on the grill. It seems to me a compact, homogeneous, symmetrical EP that does not leave a riff, a chord, a note, a snare hit to chance. Everything is made to measure. The tracks are extremely dynamic (something I already said above) and it is one of the elements that can be most easily identified from this group in this EP, that continuous dynamism. For this re-edition, the label Nihilistic Holocaust included three bonus tracks, making it even more powerful and complete. In summary, we are facing an excellent EP, which evaporates a Death Metal of a very high technical level and very elaborated. Listen to it, simply listen to it. Gorencephalic is a Brazilian brutal death metal band originating from Feira de Santana in the state of Bahia. The group was formed in 2023 and almost immediately made its presence known by releasing two digital singles. A year later, the band prepared its first release ,,Gore of the Forgotten", which was issued on CD with the support of several independent labels from Brazil. The material also received a European re-release enriched with additional tracks. Part of the lineup has experience gained in other projects, including Deformity BR, where the musicians developed their extreme sound.
The EP ,,Gore of the Forgotten" is a short yet intense manifestation of brutal death metal that draws heavily from the classic late 90s sound while maintaining its own identity. Five tracks packed into just under sixteen minutes deliver a compact, well-thought-out dose of extremity where not only heaviness matters, but also composition. From the very first seconds, it is clear that the band focuses on distinctive riffs and dynamic tempo, yet avoids falling into monotony. The individual songs differ in character – from direct, classic brutality, through more complex and slightly abstract structures, to moments touching on a darker, almost black metal atmosphere. The clearly audible bass also deserves attention, adding depth and thickness to the overall sound. The production is not sterile, which works in favor of the material – the sound is raw, ,,organic", bringing to mind older releases of the genre. Thanks to this, the EP has the right weight and atmosphere, although at times some technical shortcomings can be noticed. The strongest aspect of the release lies in the opening tracks, which stand out with their energy and creativity. The ending loses some momentum, and certain riffs may feel familiar, yet this does not significantly affect the overall reception. It is a solid and promising release for fans of old school brutal death metal.

TIME FOR METAL Webzine (Ger)

Die brasilianische Formation Gorencephalic gründete sich im Jahre 2023. Das Quartett legte sich gleich ziemlich ins Zeug und haute kurze Zeit später gleich zwei Singles auf den Markt. Ebenfalls im Jahre 2024 erschien eine EP namens Gore Of The Forgotten in Eigenregie. Diese wurde überwiegend in der brasilianischen bzw. für die südamerikanische Gegend verbreitet. Im Jahre 2025 wurde dann ein neuer Song namens Body Snatcher rausgehauen. Das französische Undergroundlabel Nihilist Holocaust Records hat die Qualitäten der Band erkannt und bringt jetzt die EP noch einmal für den restlichen Markt heraus. Den Song Body Snatcher und zwei Livesongs gibt es gratis dazu.
Human Waste Colony kommt gleich ohne Umschweife zum Punkt. Auf das obligatorische Intro wird verzichtet und man ballert gleich zügig drauflos. Death Metal ist angesagt. Ein kleiner Anflug einer Melodie leitet den weiteren Untergang ein. Der tiefe Gesang gesellt sich dazu, man nimmt wieder Fahrt auf und geht zurück zur Midtempo-Melodie. Ja, das macht Laune. Die Riffs sind technisch anspruchsvoll und bleiben hängen. Kurzes Break und noch einmal Knüppel aus dem Sack. Der Bass brummt ordentlich und das Ganze klingt schön brutal. Ein verspieltes Solo gesellt sich dazu und wird schön variiert. Man ist sowohl beim Riffing, als auch bei der Geschwindigkeit sehr um Abwechslung bemüht.
Klar, es handelt sich um eine sehr undergroundlastige Produktion, und dies hört man auch an allen Ecken und Kanten. Das stört mich aber nur am Rande. Man muss aber schon etwas genauer hinhören. Mittlerweile ist man ja auch verwöhnt.
Egal, denn komischerweise ist der Sound beim nachfolgenden Song Asylum auch wesentlich besser. Finde ich schon interessant.
Das Teil kommt gleich mit einer schönen Blastbeatattacke aus den Startlöchern und bleibt von Anfang an brutal. Ja, das ist fett. Geht gut ins Ohr. Cannibal-Corpse-ähnliche Attacken in Form technischen Riffings werden präsentiert und man bleibt überwiegend beim schnellen Tempo. Hier und da verschleppt man es etwas, groovt sogar ein wenig, bis man dann mit einem Pig Squeal im Gepäck die Slam-Keule auspackt, aber auch diese wird technisch präsentiert. Schöne Sache. Man greift noch einmal an und dann ist der Song auch schon vorbei.
Kurze und knackige Songs, aber dafür auf den Punkt kommend, sind das Ding von Gorencephalic.
Auch Metrazol Convulsions geht in diese Richtung. Man knattert wieder wild drauflos, zeigt sich im Tempo abwechslungsreich, baut einen kurzen Slam mit ein und schaltet dann wieder auf Angriffsmodus um. Wie gesagt, aufgrund der Produktion muss man schon etwas genauer hinhören, aber dann stellt man fest, dass das Songwriting recht ausgetüftelt ist. Man hat das Gefühl, dass jeder Akkord, jeder Wechsel, jedes Riff und jeder Drum-Beat genau da ist, wo er auch hingehört, und keiner ist zu viel oder zu wenig. Die Kürze der Spielzeit kommt mir persönlich sehr entgegen, gerade im brutaleren Death Metal halte ich es für angebracht.
Dieses langgezogene Riff und das fette Riffing bei ECT sind extrem geil. Das spätere Tremolo-Picking ist auch sehr stark. Wenn sie sich im groovigen Bereich bewegen, werden Erinnerungen an Immolation wach.
Mit Body Snatcher hat man einen Song auf der EP, welcher, wie schon am Anfang erwähnt, 2025 als Single ausgekoppelt wurde, und hier zeigen sie auch noch einmal alles das, was sie sehr stark macht. Das Songwriting ist total durchdacht, und wenn sie ein wenig schleppen und drücken und dabei trotzdem fix unterwegs sind, erzeugen sie eine sehr geile Ausstrahlung. Das getriebene Riffing im schnellen Midtempo und immer schneller werdende Drums schocken total. Das Teil fegt wie ein Orkan über einen und haut einen total um. Auch das Solo fetzt ohne Ende und das ganze Teil ist eine fette Death-Metal-Nummer. Schöne Nummer. Auf diesem Weg können sie gerne weitermachen.
Mit Procedure und Agony Yells gibt es noch zwei flinke Live-Nummern als Bonus. Die Songs wurden auch vorher noch nicht herausgebracht und machen absolut Laune.

This is the first time that I listen to this band and I couldn't find any information on them other than their Visceral Circuitry Records label. But PEASANT GOD's music is very heavy with guttural vocals. It's kind of Sludge-ish. I think this is the type of music that a serial killer would listen to when he's doing his business. I don't know if the drummer is a human or a machine. But it has some double bass drums at some points that doesn't seem humanly possible. I don't know if this a full release or an EP since it's just four songs and two kind of preludes in between them. I can easily believe that this album can be a soundtrack for a slasher film. It is that aggressive and menacing. Jeffrey Dahmer would love this band. This is unlike anything that I ever heard before in my life. If you're into Sludge Metal you would probably love this. If you're not into Sludge or Industrial Metal, stay away from this before you get the urge to cut yourself for pleasure.
